Microsoft wilde absoluut dat de verfilming van hun populaire spellenreeks niet de zoveelste flop zou worden, en haalde daarom Alex Garland (28 Days Later) binnen als scriptschrijver en Jackson als uitvoerend producent. Een regisseur is nog niet bekend, maar er gaan geruchten dat de Mexicaan Guillermo del Toro (Blade II, Hellboy) momenteel in gesprek is met Jackson voor een plek in de regisseursstoel.
