Regardless of how your small business? focus changes over the years, it is still important to keep track of all your contacts and manage your sales. There are other reasons why a company might focus on a different industry. Sometimes, a company can tap the market it?s already in. The only way to continue its growth is to expand into a different industry completely. This is Google?s strategy: Having dominated search since the late 1990s, it has been moving into other markets for the last decade. Maybe it isn?t a matter of your own success, but the success of a new competitor instead. A bigger company enters the same market and makes it difficult to stay afloat. Competition might sting, but it could give you the push you need to change direction. Which New Market Is Best for Your Company? To figure out which new market your company would work well in, do what?s natural and talk to your customers. What more could they gain from your service, or what more do they want to gain? Communicating with your new customers (those you were not marketing to in the first place) is an even better way of testing a new market. Do these customers know other people or companies in that specific industry who would take interest in your company? Ask new customers why they are coming to you for your service. It?s a great way to pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses in a market you aren?t as familiar with. Create a trial marketing campaign for the new industry. Record the response you get from consumers, and use that to forge a path into future market opportunities. When to Jump from the Old to the New I use the word ?jump? loosely, because a company?s transition from one industry to the next is not as definite. It could merely be an additional service or a change in your product that allows you to break into a new market. For example, Spreedly recently ditched its three-year-old subscription billing system after releasing a tangential product for a new market, which received a great response. They realized the new product?s revenue and market potential was several times bigger than the company?s initial business and took steps to make the new product the focus. If and when you see this happening, you should find a way to move from a familiar industry to a more promising one. In order to enter a new industry, research must be done and precautions must be taken. Ask questions frequently about the new industry. As always, listening to your customers in that industry is important since it?s likely you are not an expert in this area. It is new territory, after all, and you can learn from both new consumers and competitors. This will help you develop a sales pitch for this new audience, and it can lead to improvements in your product or service. Surviving the Transformation Making the transition is not always easy, but it should feel completely natural, like it should have occurred to you before. Job Description: Goals "To quickly and responsibly build a profitable and sustainable ecommerce business that will compete effectively with similar stores in its market as well as complete with Amazon, eBay, and other marketplaces." Google Analytics: 5 Custom Ecommerce Events to Track May 14, 2013 · by Tim Wilson       A friend recently asked me about event tracking on his new ecommerce site. He wondered if I had a comprehensive list of events to track. Well, in answer to my friend, this article is my list of five favorite event tracking customizations, using Google Analytics, for ecommerce sites. Click-throughs on Home Page Promotions For most sites, the home page is the most popular landing page. That makes it valuable real estate, and it means that it deserves a little https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/114552434753283393566 extra data collection. Home pages tend to have at least one "feature? area, and many have both primary and secondary promotional areas ? promoting individual products and special offers or campaigns. There are two things to track about these features. Which ones drive the most or least clicks? Which ones drive the most or least conversions? Adding a Google Analytics custom event as an onClick event for each promotion makes both metrics readily available, using this tracking code. _gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'Home Page', 'Main Promo Clickthrough', '[Promo descriptor]']); With this tracking in place, the report at "Content > Events > Top Events" provides detail on individual click-throughs and subsequent conversions. Drill down on the ?Home Page? category and then on ?Promo Clickthrough,? and then click the "Ecommerce" link above the chart at the top of the page. The resulting report lists the number of visits where the visitor clicked on each promo link, as well as the revenue, transactions, and conversion rate for each of those visits: During a single visit, a visitor may click on multiple promotions. If that happens, the visit will be included in each of the individual rows in the report. Add-to-cart Clicks Many ecommerce sites have ?add to cart? buttons that are not automatically tracked by Google Analytics. If your add-to-cart functionality simply launches an overlay or shows an on-screen message that the product has been added to the cart, then you may not be tracking these actions in a way that is easily accessible. You may also have ?add to cart? buttons on different types of pages: product details pages, ?Quick View? overlay pages, and category and shelf pages. If so, event tracking that is well crafted enables you to analyze these actions both by page type and across page types. Use this tracking code to do this. _gaq.push(['_trackEvent', '[Page Type]', 'Add to Cart', '[Product Name]']); The standard event tracking report provides detail on how often this functionality is used, which products are added to the cart, and the resulting conversion rate by product. Here's a sample report. Enlarge This Image This tagging also enables you to set up a Google Analytics ?conversion goal? of ?Add to Cart? ? setting up a goal of ?Event Action = ?Add to Cart?? ? to determine what percentage of traffic to your go to website site, as well as what percentage of specific segments of traffic to your site, add at least one product to their cart. Unsuccessful 'Add to Cart' If you have products on your site that require shoppers to select an option like size, color, or quantity before they can successfully add the product to their carts, then use event tracking to capture how often visitors try to add a product to their cart before selecting a requisite option. Trigger this event at the same time that you display an error message to the visitors letting them know that they need to take additional action. Here's the tracking code. _gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'Product Page', 'Unsuccessful Add to Cart', '[Error descriptor]',1,true]); The ?Error descriptor? can be the exact text that is displayed to the user. Standard event reporting in Google Analytics then displays what errors are being presented, as well as the number of orders that occurred on visits when those errors were displayed. If an error message has a low conversion rate, then it is possible that visitors are actually getting ?stuck? and are not, ultimately, able to complete a purchase. A high ratio indicates that visitors are triggering the error multiple times during the visit, which means there is possibly something either broken or confusing about the page design. Unsuccessful Checkouts, Registrations, and Logins ?Add to Cart? is only one of the ?user submit? actions on your site. Visitors also click a button to complete their orders, to register with the site, and to log in to the site. If you have form validation built into these features ? and you should ? then you also need to track how often the form validation events are occurring. Adding event tracking to form validation enables you to monitor if these occur on your site. Here's a sample tracking code for an unsuccessful ?Place Order? click: _gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'Checkout', 'Unsuccessful Place Order', '[Error descriptor]',1,true]); And here is sample tracking code for an unsuccessful registration form submission: _gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'Registration Form', 'Unsuccessful Registration', '[Error descriptor]',1,true]); Here's the code for an unsuccessful login: _gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'Login Form', 'Unsuccessful Login', '[Error descriptor]',1,true]); Accessing the data for each of these errors is similar to what was described in the previous section for unsuccessful add-to-cart clicks. Site Searches with No Results Your site search engine provides reports on searches that return ?No Results? to the user. But, you may not monitor those reports closely. Moreover, those reports do not tell you whether visitors who unsuccessfully searched went on to find a product and convert to a sale. Google Analytics provides several ways to capture this information. But, once again, this is not information that is captured automatically, and event tracking is often the easiest approach to implement. Simply add the following code to your ?No Results? site search page: _gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'Search Results', 'No Results', '[Searched phrase]',1,true]); With this code implemented, event-tracking reporting shows a list of search terms resulting in no results, which represent an opportunity to add the terms to your search engine?s thesaurus. You can also set up a custom alert and receive an email if there is a jump in events where ?Event Action = No Results,? which will alert you to dig into this report. Custom Variables This article has described five ways to use Google Analytics custom event tracking to capture actionable information about your ecommerce site. Google Analytics also supports ?custom variables,? which can also be used to capture useful information. Customization: No Single Answer When it comes to data collection and analysis, there is no single right approach. Every site is different. The recommendations in this article may not apply to you; they may not be the highest priority for your site. Send to Kindle When I decided to try my month of experimenting with posts that were all lists of five things, I reached out to a number of the people I know online and asked them to consider contributing a guest post. One of those who responded was my friend Laura Petrolino of Flying Pig Consulting down in Florida. When Laura responded, she said she wanted to do her list post as a video, because a) she likes doing videos, and b) I recently recorded a video post for her blog, and c) she recently had me as a guest on her Call a Biz Hero podcast. Now a few things before you watch the video, as I attempt to answer any questions you might have up front: 1) Yes, tequila might be an odd choice for my blog since I don?t drink, but as it turns out, neither does Laura. I wish you could?ve seen my face on Wednesday during the keynote at Google I/O. My eyes lit up big and bold and I?m sure my mouth opened wide while I wondered, ?Did I just really see and hear them kill Zagat scores?? Indeed, I did. Google even announced it on their blog , too. This, you may know, is something I?ve been advocating for time and time again , so it was nice to see that Google finally realized the error of a 30-point rating scale. That said, Zagat scores aren?t completely dead. In the new Google Maps, some business listings https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/114552434753283393566 will continue to display a small Zagat icon and users can click that for additional Zagat-based information about the business. When your online presence drives new prospects to your small business, how do you manage your potential deals? Following from his article, I experimented with various ecommerce sites, to better understand the status of mobile shopping today. Since much of http://www.saasaffiliates.com/ the growth is attributed to tablets, I used my iPhone. Other than very large retailers, there are few smartphone-optimized ecommerce sites. This prevents higher growth on these smaller devices. Non-optimized stores are cumbersome on an iPhone as the user is forced to zoom and pan to get to content and buttons. The mobile optimized stores and apps are easy to shop on, especially if you have previously researched the product are ready to buy. The presentation of products for most of these stores is excellent. Adding products to carts and checking out is more than adequate in most cases. Many sites even incorporate promotions and merchandising tactics. Beyond the lack of smartphone optimization, my two biggest observations were the following. Importance of powerful search on mobile optimized sites. Leading sites offer suggested keywords and further filtering once you have results, making it fast to find the items you are looking for. On many sites, categories are hidden from the home page or well below the fold, which further encourages the use of search as the primary navigation. The power of the Google Shopper app smartphones users, especially for buying merchandise from local stores. It's no surprise that Google understands shopping behaviors. It emphasizes the importance of search in shopping. I?ve casually observed the Shopper app previously, but this is first time I used it in depth. It?s effective for finding a wide variety of merchandise. This article will focus on how the Google Shopper app is likely influencing purchasing behaviors and what you may want to do about it. Overview of Google Shopper App I shopped for Frisbee golf discs earlier today. I used the Goggle Shopper app to help me find the best item and store. Hence, ?Frisbee golf discs? is the basis of this research. Here are the results on the standard Google search app on the iPhone, below. The Shopper home screen focuses on Mother?s Day items. The search is as you would expect. You can also scan a bar code or enable the microphone on your phone, to avoid typing. The search results for "Frisbee golf disks" are concise and include a starting price, the number of stores with the item, including the local stores that may have the item in stock. There are also product reviews. I chose the first choice on the page: the DX 3 Pack. The DX 3 Pack product image is crisp and visible. There is a brief description that also can be expanded to show more details. The bottom of the detail listing includes an overall rating and related products. Just under the description, in the image below, are the stores that stock the item. Detail levels are appropriate with (a) the estimated total price, including shipping and tax, (b) new or used, and (c) ratings. The biggest eye opener to me was the local listings. I did not think of Product Listing Ads in Google Shopping as a tactic for local merchants. But it's a very good one. Since I wanted these Frisbee discs to arrive soon, I clicked on the REI near my office and called the store directly from Shopper. REI did, in fact, have the item in stock. I purchased the item there. Before that, however, my daughter went to several local stores looking for these discs. I likely would have purchased online from one of the other stores if the local option had not existed within Shopper. REI's Product Listing Ads, therefore, were a well-placed investment in this case. Now, consider the product details from two of the stores when you click through from this listing. The left screen from Eastern Mountain Sports is optimized for a smartphone. The image is smaller than it needs to be, but the rest of the site is optimized. The store on the right, ModernBIKE.com, is not optimized. I?m more likely to shop the optimized store unless the price is dramatically different. About Google Shopping Google Shopping is similar to other comparison-shopping engines like TheFind , Shopping.com , and Nextag.com . Amazon?s Product Ads serve a similar purpose. Google Shopping is available on any browser and is optimized for your device. Shopper is the app for Google Shopping for smartphones. The same products appear in both venues. The same products may also be used in PLAs within the standard Google search engine. Here is an example, below. Notice the images above the map. Those are Product Listing Ads from some of the same stores that appear in the results from the Shopper app. They are links to a single product within a single store rather than to a product as you would see using Shopper. PLAs are created from a data feed that you send to Google. They may be used to feed ads in the Google search network or in Google Shopping. They are all paid ads. You will pay only when someone clicks on your ad. To learn more about how to implement PLAs, watch our recent webinar, "Google Shopping: Optimizing for Maximum Profits." . Within PLAs, include your entire product content, optimized for the PLA itself. Include short descriptions and images that are appropriate for where you will be presenting the PLAs. Segment your products and tag them in various ways for merchandising. If you use PLAs and turn on campaigns for smartphones, you need a mobile optimized site. Shoppers on smartphones are usually in a buying mode. They will likely opt for the easy-to-use interface if they are ready to buy. As Google expands its influence with local merchants, which is significant already, we may see more of them invest in PLAs to draw in local shoppers for immediate purchases. This will put more pressure on online merchants to offer a price advantage with fast, free shipping. I?ve included, below, one final screen shot of Google Shopping on the desktop, which includes more details and filter options. Google Shopping, in short, is a good, consolidated place to shop. Enlarge This Image Conclusion I'm impressed with the Shopper smartphone app. Google Shopping is a viable place to shop for items online. In time, Google Shopping could rival the product selection on Amazon.com. We?ll see.

And of course there are those who create great content, but don?t do a good job of connecting with their readers. It?s one thing to publish the content, but another to get it out there, get readers, and then connect and engage with those readers. How you do that can vary, depending on who your audience is, and what your overall goals are. But it is important to move beyond merely just creating and publishing content. In fact, if your small business is blogging, why not go the extra step and have a little fun with your readers and audience. Sharing moments of fun can be great for community building. So with that in mind, here are five ways you can have fun with your blog readers: 1. Go off topic in comments This might not work for every business, but if you start getting comments, make sure you respond and ask more questions. As you get to know the commenters, feel free to veer off topic . You can facilitate this by using a commenting plugin like Livefyre , which encourages a more real time type of commenting. Some of the blog communities I?m involved in excel at this, with commenters and bloggers having multiple conversations involving jokes and more. Some purists would say that all comments should be on topic and serious. I used to think this. Not anymore. I?ve seen how people can become more like a community. Have them take you out to dinner Once you get to know them, you can hang out with them and even let them treat you to dinner. What?s more fun than that? Facebook Changes Layout of Mobile App April 29, 2013 · by Paul Chaney       Facebook recently changed the Pages layout in its Apple iOS mobile app. The reason for the change, according to Facebook, is that roughly 50 percent of Page visits come from mobile devices. A new Android version is coming soon, Facebook announced. "We've developed a new mobile Pages layout tailored to the way people look for information on their mobile devices. It's now easier for your customers to interact with your Page in a way that?s both efficient and useful," the announcement stated. Facebook's redesign has a cleaner, simpler look with more relevant information placed up front. Actions such as Like, Call, Message, and Share now appear at the top of Pages in the new version. A section for photos was also added. Benefits for Page Owners There are two primary benefits to Page owners. Higher-appearing pinned posts. Pinned posts ? those that Page owners want to be more visible ? are now front and center in the mobile version and appear above the most recent post. Easier mobile management. Switching between public and admin views can be done directly via mobile devices, which allows for easier management. Page owners can write and promote posts from the admin view. Download the Pages Manager app from the iTunes App Store for iPad and iPhone. The app allows administrators to check on their Page activities, view Insights, engage with Fans, and manage multiple Pages. Facebook's help section contains more information about editing a Page using the app. How to Get Your Page Ready Existing Pages automatically render in the mobile version. Page owners should ensure that information such as the About section is current. Local businesses will want to make sure their Pages have addresses, store hours, phone numbers, and other relevant information. Cover images appear differently in the mobile version, due to the limited space, as the profile image is layered over a cropped version of the cover. Here is an example of what department store retailer Nordstrom's cover looks like in the mobile version. Notice that the profile image and accompanying text partially obstructs the image. Here is how it looks on the desktop version. There are three options for creating covers that work well in the mobile version. The new guidelines provide much greater flexibility in what owners can do with their pages, stating, "All covers are public. This means that anyone who visits your Page will be able to see your cover. Covers can't be deceptive, misleading, or infringe on anyone else's copyright. You may not encourage people to upload your cover to their personal timelines. Covers cannot contain more than 20 percent text." Facebook explained its 20 percent text overlay policy in its help section : "The 20 percent text policy doesn't apply to pictures of products that include text on the actual product. Photos of products in real situations or photos of products with a background are acceptable. Images that are zoomed in on logos or images with text overlay aren't allowed. We don't allow images that are clearly edited to include text on the product as a loophole to policy." Text Overlay Compliance Tool A web developer in Germany has created a cover photo compliance tool that page owners can use to determine if text included in an image follows the guidelines. To use the tool, simply input your Facebook page URL and select the areas that contain text. The shorter the address, the more likely they are to take action. Use the cover to generate leads. For example, HubSpot used the following cover image to encourage people to download an ebook. Users were required to complete a form first. Change images occasionally. This keeps your page fresh and gives users reasons to return.
