11 Trends in Web Logo Design: The Good, the Bad and the Overused

"The web is constantly changing and at a much faster rate than the brick and mortar world ever has. When you think of websites from early 2000, they look nothing like the web that we know and experience today. "This means that the web is constantly being redesigned. Finding a logo that can still be relevant (or not feel outdated) in a matter of years, or even months, when we don't even know what the web will feel like, seems to be a bit more of a challenge." Cass on the other hand, says that other than budgets and timelines, "There really shouldn't be any difference. The process and fundamental principles of 'good' logo design should always stay the same." As a longtime logo designer, Smith notes that print logo design used to be the bigger challenge. "Now, he says, "with the sheer variety of desktop and mobile devices, platforms and products, designing a logo or icon for the web generally presents more of a challenge." In other words, logos need to work for multiple apps, icons, avatars, favicons and other branded collateral and of course, traditional print business cards, as well. And don't think that the color issues of print design are behind you. "Like traditional print," Smith warns, "color can easily go awry on the web. Color calibration and profile generation across devices and software can leave many people dizzy, and the ensuing results can look pretty awful. As you would need to ensure that your print-based logo reproduces well in CMYK color, you need to ensure that your web-based logo will resize and adapt to various screen sizes and resolutions with color consistency. Creating icons for the complete range of Apple devices is almost a science and quotable job in itself if you are not used to it." Chime In & Stay Tuned We'll have more from these experts in the weeks to come, but in the meantime, we'd love to get your feedback in the comments.

But as Business Insider pointed out , Ma may have thought that the company should have gone with another design. The Pie 'Isn't Big Enough' "Right now is a great time to be a woman in tech, but there's not enough women in tech," Mayer told a CES2012 panel hosted by CNET. "[I] worry a lot of times the conversation gets really focused on what percentage of the pie is women. And the truth is, the pie isn't big enough. We're not producing enough computer scientist.

The Apple Guide to Logo Design

The Apple Guide to Logo Design image adam apple advert vintage It was laughably bad. Not long after this logo made its debut, Steve Jobs commissioned graphic designer Rob Janoff to come up with something that, you know actually looked like a logo? Janoff knew his job and he did it well. He took all of the information he knew about Apple and condensed it right down into the simplest possible format. If there is one thing you take away from this logo design guide, make it this keep your logo design as utterly simple as possible. But, if you really blog url want a logo as successful as Apples then there are a few other things you want to make sure are still captured within that simplicity. Be human One of the biggest selling points of every small business anywhere is that you offer a more human, friendly and personal service. You might as well play to that natural advantage in your branding. Probably the biggest marker that distinguished Apple from Microsoft is that Apple was a brand that people could relate to on a more personal level. Microsoft was a machine. Apple had a heart and a sense of humour. The big element in the Apple logo design that emphasised this aspect was the use of rainbow colours, making the logo feel accessible. Stand out However, Id argue that the biggest advantage of those rainbow colours (and why I think any small business is better off looking at the older version of the Apple logo design as a guide for their own) is because it stands out a mile from other logos. Could it fail to capture your eye? Not a chance.

West High logo faces copyright challenge

The Wolf Pack logo on the Steve Lopez Stadium sign at West High School will have to be removed, as the logo is too close a match to the University of Nevada, Reno?s copyrighted athletics department logo. Glenn Moore/Tracy Press In fact, it's more of an epoch than a traditional Gregorian year at this point. Slab serif fonts if they're unique fonts are still a viable alternative to been-there-done-that sans serifs in logos, and the web community still enjoys them. That being said, a good, juicy script can be one of the liveliest, most unexpected logo choices yet, particularly if your logo is solely typographic. Rephoria uses my personal favorite, Candy Script, a swash-heavy number that's almost too voluptuous for work but which still makes the cut for a single-word logo. Just remember: When using more unusual fonts for logo design, restraint and legibility are key. 6. Verdant and Plant-Inspired Plants and leaves aren't just for green tech companies, folks. When you're trying to project growth, one of the most obvious logo choices is flora. A shy set of leaves, a furling bud, a sprouting seed what could better convey your company's fresh problem solving and rapid expansion? 7. Quadrangles It's not a rectangle, it's not a square, but whatever it is, it's popping up everywhere. Quadrangles are, if the web is to be believed, the new dots.

Yahoo Intern's New Logo Design Was Way Better

Mario And if we're going to go the nostalgia route, why limit ourselves to baseball? Nintendo owns the Mariners and no other team would be able to even legally attempt this. Unless those "people" are right and Nintendo does truly hate the Mariners and roots for them to fail and would do anything to accomplish their goal of ruining the Mariners forever and completely and would sell rival teams the right to use their own iconic Nintendo video game characters. Citrus Okay, Mario is probably a bit too far off the theme unless the team changes the name to something more video gamey as a publicity stunt in order to sell something ({ahem} mighty ducks {clears throat}), so let's go back to the sea. Sailors require citrus and its delicious vitamin C in order to not become the scurvy monsters depicted on the edges of old maps. I just realized...why are we limiting ourselves to the same colors? That citrus really clashes with the sea-tones of our current colors, so let us experiment some more. Citrus w/ New Colors This...this isn't great. This was a mistake. This looks more like the Miami Florida Marlins of Florida and doesn't represent the Northwest very well at all. Also, Washington doesn't really produce a noteworthy amount of citrus and I'm afraid a good portion of baseball fans would not understand the reference to long-haul sailing.

Seattle Mariners New Logo Design Club

Mariners_logo_sad_sailor Glenn Moore/Tracy Press slideshow West High School will unveil a new Wolf Pack logo during the schools homecoming celebration on Oct. 25 the result of a copyright dispute with a Nevada university. In 2011, representatives of University of Nevada, Reno, objected to West Highs use of a stylized wolf head logo, according to Casey Goodall, Tracy Unified School Districts assistant superintendent for business services. "An attorney representing UNR contacted us and said, We think you have a copyright infringement problem where you are using our logo," Goodall said. Goodall said that as far as he could tell, the UNR logo and the West High logo in use in 2011 were identical. When West High opened in 1993, the Wolf Pack logo was a head-on view of a wolfs head over a yellow "W." That logo was replaced around 2002. "I think they thought it was old fashioned. They wanted to modernize it," Goodall said. A Tracy Unified School District employee no one remembers who created the 2002 design. Goodall speculated that the person used the UNR logo as a starting point. "At first, we didnt know how we got this logo," Goodall said, "but it seems like we possibly went out on the Internet and said, Wouldnt this be a cool logo? and adopted this logo without any great effort." Legal claims clear Mike Samuels, associate athletic director for marketing at UNR, saw the disputed Wolf Pack logo when he saw the West High basketball team play. "Its rare to have someone take our logo and use it as their own," Samuels said. He notified Collegiate Licensing Co., which monitors and licenses the use of the universitys logos and trademarks, and the company informed the school district about the copyright infringement. Letting a high school use the UNR logo could create "brand confusion," Samuels said. "We spend a lot of money branding our logo," he said.

This is the sort of insight marketers want to know in order to optimize sales. Internet neuroscience In the latest issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences , a paper was published using EyeQuant findings (two of the study's three authors, Milica Mormann and Christof Koch, are affiliated with the company). The paper, which centered on a research project that conducted eye-tracking studies on several food items, offered several new mathematical models regarding the tug-of-war between the visual appeal of items (or web sites) versus how much they cost to purchase. The study also offers some empirical backing for EyeQuant's claims, and gives the company new weaponry to help it attract potential clients through a set of new algorithms. For example: In the study, students at Caltech had their eye movements measured while staring at a grid of snack food items. The students' eye movements were then compared with the snack food that they chose to eat after they finished viewing the grid. Results extrapolated from the snack food observations were integrated into computational models of the eye's movements. Stelzer said in an email that the authors reported an area under the curve of .93, where 1 marks a perfect prediction. That means their mathematical model is usable and that they could replicate their findings. if everyone's dressed in red, being green wins Stelzer told me that one of the main takeaways from the study was the importance of visual impact. Making sure that the humaneyeis drawn towards a productthrough its design aloneremains an important factor in sales, but this is 100% context dependent. Put simply, if everyone's dressed in red, being green wins." He also said the study showed EyeQuant's product, which uses computerized models of eye-tracking instead of actually eye-tracking every user, could be used by companies to evaluate their web sites as a substitute for expensive internal corporate studies. Eye-tracking, meet search engines.

Web Design Contest Yields Alternatives to Redskins Name, Logo

99designs , a leading online marketplace for graphic designers, put the challenge of crafting Washingtons potential next logo to its online community in the form of a week-long re-branding contest . Launched on Oct. 2., the San Francisco-based company received nearly 1,900 entries in its competition; all vying for a $500 purse to be awarded to the lone winner and honorable mention candidate and the bragging rights of meeting a growing demand for a fresh new look in the nations capital. While most designers adhered to the name suggestions provided by the guest judges Robert McCartney of The Washington Post, Kevin Ewoldt and Ken Meringolo of Hogs Haven , and Slate editor David Plotz those suggestions (Warriors, Renegades and Griffins)were merely loose guidelines, so as to not restrict the creativity of participating designers. Ultimately, the winner who goes by the username Mixaurus elected to go with the Warriors, crafting a logo that incorporates the Washington Monument and the Pentagon, harmonizing to form the outline of a W. Mbingcrosby, awarded honorable mention, strayed outside the lines in creating a Washington Redtails design, in accordance with the alternative famously proposed by D.C. Councilmember David Grosso in April. The two finalists are featured on either the top or bottom of this page.

Method: Let's Get Physical (with Services)

Design with Service in Mind

To prototype this concept, service designers would simulate the experience in an existing hotel. Hotel guests would be given welcome packets with a curated library catalogue, order forms, tourist information, and a feedback form. The receptionists would have a selection of library material, and inside each item are other props made by the service designers: a check-out card and custom bookmarks with related tourist sights. The prototype runs for a few days with hotel staff playing along. Hotel guests must believe the service is real. The designers will observe the experiences, collect feedback, and involve themselves only when necessary. In designing the next generation of digital devices, the experience is more than the sum of interactions, and prototyping the experience will be crucial. 3. Map the Journey Services are comprised of many individual, and often intangible, touchpoints that happen over time and space. Because of this defining characteristic, service designers need to map out the formal elements of the producer's work on the "back stage" with the customer experiences of the 'front stage,' and the role of the "actors" on each side. Consider the customer journey with Virgin America. Despite being known for their attention to service online and in-person, there are also several non-brand interactions that influence the travel experience: security checkpoints, delays on the runway, pesky seat neighbors.

Core77 Design Awards 2013 Honorees: Service Design

MIOS_C77_Post.jpg The Dream Team has always been characterized to work together, but not only for the creation of new ideas for their projects, but also to have fun while doing it. "we always waited for the perfect moment to hack into Allen's Facebook account during the breaks and we managed to do it several times!" Also, hidden talents were discovered while creating the video for the Future Air Travel 2030. Allen Tsai showed his great future air travel singing abilities by creating Skynex soundtrack called "Are you ready to fly with the Skynex?". - What was an "a-ha" moment from this project? What are the things that make us feel more stressed while travelling? That was the question we asked ourselves, and after hours of talking about our experiences and finding out which are the problems that we have in common, we said: "a-ha! Here we have a good opportunity to create a hassle free air travel experience". The fact that we are not from the same country and that we have all had the opportunity to travel to other countries helped us to analyse everything from a broader point of view. Student Notable Designers: Jacqueline Cooksey and Benjamin Winter Parsons the New School for Design WELCOMESBURG is a service design initiative. It is a mobile workshop that stimulates discussion and awareness around gentrification. The project enables a better understanding for collaboration in order to solve a problem of such complexity. The project is inspired by the popular carbon "footprinting" and "offsetting" schemes and consists of a range of services designed to confront new residents with the unintended consequences of their presence in the community. By playfully challenging neighbors to directly support each other's best interests and 'offset' their 'gentrification footprints'. These offsets range from supportive to downright ridiculous.

Renewing public services through design

The Gov.uk homepage A theme emerges very quickly in the book: We're in a service economy. It's not that making things isn't important; indeed, making things that matter is more important than ever. The point, though, is that any one object is rarely so important that it can stand on its own merits. The objects and things we make are rather the beginning of a conversation that makers and designers have with the people for whom they design and make things. Gray explains it this way: a product "can be considered a physical manifestation of a service or set of services: a service avatar." With this in mind, lets turn our attention to, as Craig Wiggins writes , our kind of people. I think many of us look at our various roles with bi-focal lenses: one lens focused on meeting the lofty story we tell ourselves and others about how we help people perform better or develop as individuals; another lens focused on the objects we create, such as e-learning courseware, simulations, and so onthe manipulatives and the Jeopardy boards (thats for you, Cammy Bean). Consider for a moment the idea that everything we do (and what our peers in our organizations do) contributes to one object in a set of services. We provide more than one service that creates change in our organizations. Take, for example, changes in customer interactions that we help design and implement that result in higher customer engagement. In this example, higher customer engagement is the business goal. Success can be determined through positive tweets, an increase in returning visitors to a given e-commerce portal, or an increase in subscriptions to direct marketing collateral. Sure, we may produce one or many productsor interfacesto content. But the product/content is not the end goal; the end goal is to effectively change customer engagement. Therefore, its not the things we make that are so important.

360 Design and SEO Now Offers Cutting Edge Web Development Services in Texas

Weve seen seismic shifts in the area of digital distribution of music, movies, and every other form of media. Users now expect their purchases to be portable and consumable on multiple platforms. We crave flexibility, and the way we buy and own is changing accordingly. Spotify has proved that consumers are willing to pay to rent music if they feel theyre getting a valuable service. Services like AirBnB, 9flats, Getaround, and Lyft are making flat-sharing and car-sharing mainstream. The new competitor Jetsetter is helping to turn the concept of a luxury second home or family holiday on its head. In the past, we projected our status and success through the things we owned--the car in the driveway, the vacation house, the books and the CDs that we displayed in our home. But increasingly status is now projected through our experiences and pursuits, and consequently the desire to own material objects fades. Innovative new services will see companies generate increased revenue based on usage. For example, Microsofts Kinect technology could be used to charge for movies based on the number of people in the room. As the focus shifts from ownership to access, these are key implications: Companies should design clear access models like renting, trading, and leasing. Ownership could simply become a standard upgrade function across categories. Include a variety of status-boosting elements in access services. For example, one-click ways to capture experiences and share them through social media networks, as well as insight sharing for those who prefer to project their intellectual pursuits. Create an API for commerce by atomizing your catalogue or offering.

5 Trends That Will Shape Digital Services In 2013

The DBA, for example, already runs a suppliers register and thus is well-placed to help co-ordinate a directory of experienced designers. The Design Council, which has previously debated the issue of design measurement , can lead on providing better evidence of design. If all bodies can work in their specialist areas then (in theory) some neutrality and progression can result. It is proposed that overall leadership would reside with Cabinet Office the department responsible for efficiency and reform and the one that Treasury aside currently holds the purse strings. The report promotes the concept of user-focused service and strategic design as a means to save money (among other things). Design may sound an improbable suggestion, it reads. The design sector has an undeniable reputation for fuelling the whims of fashion and for pursuing creativity at someone elses expense. It adds, We are not advocating the frivolous use of public money for vanity projects. Rather, we are concerned with the application of certain methodologies in the fields of social, service and strategic design. It places user-focused design in contrast to the existing norm for public service development, which it describes as disjointed incrementalism, or trying to reengineer what exists, rather than stepping back and thinking about what is actually needed. Exemplar initiatives include the Government Digital Services excellent Gov.uk project driven by a team of designers and developers working inside Cabinet Office and the Helsinki Design Lab, set up to develop strategic design expertise in Finnish government and public services. The Gov.uk homepage As the report concludes Often the solutions seem more like common sense than radically new ideas, particularly once things are appreciated from a user point of view. The space to make change happen, it says, relies on people having good ideas which some people are naturally better at, and designers happen to be very good at. Having another idea not stopping when youve had one good one is the modus operandi. And as the report notes, the current context of over-stretched public services and straightened finances provides the perfect opportunity for radical design thinking: This may be ambitious but it is achievable Lets not waste a good crisis. Speaking at the reports launch, Baroness Kingsmill said she was planning a working group to develop and see through the proposals in the report. She called for evangelists to promote design thinking in Government and beyond.

A nod to the building's original character, the machine shop run by her grandfather, comes in the form of a logo painted on the back wall. Some people say that visiting us feels like going back a few decades in time The letterpress printing machines dotted around the studio originally belonged to an ex-printer, who spent two months teaching Sigurdardottir and Gardarsdottir how to use them in the garage where they were then situated. When the machines moved into their new home, a little bit of the owner's history came with them: "The yellow chair was included in the package and we simply love it!" smiles Sigurdardottir. The Reykjavik Letterpress studio still has a raw, workshop feel to it One wall holds a moveable type set, which Sigurdardottir thinks is essential for every letterpress printer. After the exhibition, submitted work will be archived at the centre and uploaded to imageofthestudio.com Athletics has been planning Image of the Studio since late 2012, after Tochilovsky invited Owens to take part in a panel discussion of Unit Editions's book Herb Lubalin: American Graphic Designer (1918-81). We were captivated by the recollections of all of the panelists as they discussed Herb, his studio culture, creative working style and the real challenges of being a practicing designer. After the panel, we discussed with Alexander the unique dialogue that occurs when fellow designers are face to face, exchanging opinions and professional experiences, as well as how the notion of the design studio changes across people, technology, time and culture. We agreed it wasn't something that could be fully captured in a singular medium - be it print, online or in motion or live. Thus the idea of the exhibition was born, says Owens. I have long been thinking of a way to shed more light on the design studio model, especially as a teacher. For students, there is a lot of mystery to the way studios operate or how they began, adds Tochilovsky. I've also been curious to see more of designers' faces not many show portraits of themselves on their websites.

Do they charge fixed fees, or charges based on square footage. Hourly rates? If hourly rates are to be applied, what will be the hourly billing rate, and what is the estimated number of hours for the project? What about billing rates for travel time, and other reimbursable expenses? Here are the most used forms of payment structures for interior design services. Costs per square metre/square foot Interior Design Companies Some interior design firms provide professional design services only, and are not necessarily involved in the actual purchase of items for a project. Other interior design firms may hold a valid contractors license in order to hire subcontractors and perform 'design & build' contracting work. However, the majority of certified interior designers or interior design firms strictly prepare designs for projects to be executed by licensed contractors and sub-contractors. Also, part of these services must include helping clients locate and co-ordinate suppliers, and other relevant resources in obtaining the necessary merchandise for an interior design project.

Method: Let's Get Physical (With Services)

What material would they be interested in? Would hotel staff be able to manage the responsibilities? Service designers must consider these moments because they affect the overall experience but cannot be controlled.

5 Trends That Will Shape Digital Services In 2013

Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) October 10, 2013 Website design services have a buyer power score of 3.4 out of 5. This score reflects positive, but somewhat limited, negotiation power for buyers. Prices for website design services have been rising consistently because of increasing internet access and more access to information online, according to IBISWorld procurement analyst Erich Abellera. Businesses are also earning record high profit, resulting in increased advertising expenditure. These trends are expected to continue during the next three years, during which digital media will continue to expand, driving steady price growth. In addition, a lack of substitute services further limits purchasing power. While other forms of advertising are available, none have the global reach, functionality and interactivity that websites do. Fortunately for buyers, other market conditions help boost their ability to negotiate. The website design services market is highly fragmented, and the majority of suppliers are freelancers, says Abellera. Although large advertising agencies provide web design services, an overall low level of market share concentration results in more price-based competition, with a wide range of price options from a high number of suppliers. Furthermore, website design service prices generally have a low level of volatility; the greatest input cost for suppliers is wages, so buyers experience very little risk of prices suddenly increasing. There is also little risk in the supply chain of website design services, reducing the likelihood of any disruptions in service. The main factors affecting price are time, size and the complexity of a project.

4. Excessive amount of scrolling. Most site visitors will digest more about a company website page if there is sufficient viewable information when a web page loads in the browser, without having to scroll down the page to get at the good information. Today, the temptation is to fill the browser window with large graphics, headers and "sliders". IFM suggests ensuring the header graphics use no more than 30% of the viewable area "above the fold", ensuring important information/navigation can be easily seen without any scrolling. 5. Poor or No Call to Action. When it comes down to it, great information is just "information".

Image Caption All Government communications projects will now be subject to a mandatory evaluation to track effectiveness and justify value for money. The new system will see departmental teams supported by an additional central resource for specific, short-term projects. Executive director of Government Communication Alex Aiken says, Were supporting cross-government collaboration but also empowering departments to better deliver their individual communications aims. By ensuring communication strategies are focused on Government priorities we will be able to further reduce spending at the same time as increasing the quality of Government communication. The shake-up in Government communications follows, in March, the introduction of The Creative Solutions Framework , which replaced the Central Office of Information rosters and saw the number of rostered consultancies drop from 415 to 30. None of these 30 are specialist branding or pure design consultancies. The Government Communication Service will still look to engage with consultancies on The Creative Solutions Framework on a case-by-case basis. Aiken says that in 2010 1bn was spent on communication and that has now been halved to 500m. Government communications staffing levels have fallen by 48 per cent since 2010, to 1,900 communicators in central Governement departments and 1,200 in arms length bodies today. The new Government Communication Service will be largely run by existing staff when it is introduced in January 2014. The Government Communications Service will carry out training and recruitment and Aiken and his team say they want Government Communication jobs to be seen as a desirable profession so that we dont lose our best people to the private sector. In a new review system a Government Communication Board will meet quarterly to discuss the effectiveness of campaigns, spending controls and marketing. Going forward The Creative Solutions Framework consultancies will meet with the Government Communications Service every quarter.

She is a cum laude graduate of Howard University with a degree in interior design and a minor in architecture, and she is an Allied Member of ASID (American Society of Interior Designers). Designing model homes for new home builders has dominated the majority of Williams' work over the past 25 years. She was even once featured in Uptown Magazine after the writer walked into one of her impeccably designed model homes and was told by the sales person that the designer was African American. Throughout the years of designing models, Williams found that potential homeowners would often walk through her models wanting to know how they could make their own homes just as beautiful. More times than not, many of them were not able to afford her services. She soon realized that there was a segment of the market that was being over looked. Williams' philosophy has always been that good design should not just be something that is only available to the wealthy, but that everyone deserves to live in a functional and beautiful space, regardless of budget. So she decided to create her very own Online Interior Design Service, a do-it-yourself interior design package, to fill this void. A customer can consult with her via email and phone to design their rooms. After the design has been finalized they will receive a digital design package with all of the selections for the room, a concept board, a scaled floor plan, a shopping list, and detailed instructions on how to put everything together. House Candy's virtual design packages are available now and can be ordered by going to www.housecandy.net . Their services are available nationwide, and full service residential design services are available for anyone located in the Houston, Texas area.

So why, as the next image shows, doesn't service design completely overlap with CX? First, there are components of customer experience management (things like measurement and governance) that fall outside the scope of service design. That's not to say that you can't incorporate aspects of measurement and governance into a service design project - but most companies don't typically approach these ongoing management activities today with a service design mindset. Second, there's a significant number of service designers who focus on improving the quality of life for people in need through social innovation - and design studio while noble, this work doesn't fit into today's commonly held definition of CX. Why doesn't service design completely overlap with UX? There's a good deal of UX work that goes into digital marketing touchpoints - think banner ads, landing pages, and microsites. There's no reason why the worlds of service design and digital marketing couldn't overlap, but that's just not the reality in today's business world. It's important to understand that we're standing on shifting sands as far as these disciplines go, and the pictures above may not be accurate in a few years. In fact, my vision for the future is that the field of UX will be subsumed by the field of service design as more UX practitioners take a broader view of how digital touchpoints fit into the overall customer journey. I also hope that the overlap between CX and service design will grow and as companies learn to integrate service design practices into their ongoing CX management activities.

Buyers can help control the cost of website design services by providing clear, well-defined project specifications, reducing the time and effort required from suppliers. The type of supplier also affects pricing; for example, larger firms generally offering more services but cost more than smaller firms. Some of the major vendors include WPP PLC, Omnicom Group Inc., Publicis Groupe SA and Intrepublic Group of Companies Inc.

Casey Grace Design vision board The next stage of design thinking is analysis, both quantitative and qualitative, Bodine said. Quantitative analysis can be messy, but like similar activities such as customer journey mapping absolutely critical. Ideation, Prototyping, Testing + Iterating Design thinking next takes us to thinking up ideas of what a product or service will look like, and then building a prototype. One popular example of a prototype is wire frames for laying out apps or websites. The advantage of a prototype is it can be quickly changed for low cost. In the case of services, role playing can be employed as one method of prototyping, Bodine suggested. Finally, we test and iterate. Think of it like shampoo, rinse, repeat. This is where little wrinkles are evened out, and as design guru Charles Eams once said, 'the details are not the details, they make the design.' The smallest of things can end up being super important, Bodine said, adding that she recommends the book Microinteractions by Dan Saffer to support this.

Jul 1st, 2012 James I agree with KevinN. Maybe they could have changed it a bit more over the years, like McLaren did with their logo (used to be a Kiwi which is a bird). Ferrari always seem to hang on to tradition more than McLaren and others. Not saying that Ferraris way is worse, just different. But that philosophy has been to their detriment in the past. Dec 17th, 2012 Pasquale Precisely, if Ferrari had changed anything and followed the same steps of the others, then they would not be any different and that is their strength to be different and being great at it. Great business makers do not fellow trends but make them as this company clearly did in the past and still does today. A pleasant day to all ;) May 17th, 2013 pecazp I recently started to examine logos and for the first time really looked at the Ferrari font logo. Ive seen it so many times in my life and havent realized that the F is prolonged to the point of the letter i, which is squeezed and actually represents a bullet! Id like to know is it just happy coincidence or a well known fact? Jul 27th, 2013 grace smith I used to be under the impression that the logo was an acronym for the wild strength of the horse power under the hood. But just recently it came under discusion again. I was surprised to find out that it was not.

Questionable Design Blamed For Health Website Woes

Birmingham Web Design Company Releases "the Perfect Business Image Building Package"

For President Barack Obama, glitches involving his signature legislation are an unwelcome twist. A devoted smartphone user, his political campaigns were models of high-tech efficiency. Yet the problems that have surfaced so far with healthcare.gov don't even involve the site's more complicated functions. Allowing consumers to browse anonymously was one of the recommendations of Enroll UX 2014, a $3 million, 14-month project to design an optimal user experience for the insurance marketplaces. The well-known San Francisco design firm IDEO led the project and undertook extensive consumer interviews to create an easy-to-use site. "The first thing people said to us is, 'I need to be able to understand what my options are,'" said Sam Karp, vice president of programs at the California HealthCare Foundation. The nonprofit helped organize and finance Enroll UX 2014, which also involved the federal government and 11 states. Karp said he was concerned when he tried the federal website last week and found that anonymous shopping wasn't part of it. He considers the omission a "major design flaw." "That was a design recommendation and they didn't do it," Karp said. While several states that built their own online marketplaces do allow for window shopping, the federal site serving 36 states does not.

That was a design recommendation and they didn't do it, Karp said. While several states that built their own online marketplaces do allow for window shopping, the federal site serving 36 states does not. Health and Human Services spokeswoman Joanne Peters said Tuesday the government omitted a window-shopping function because officials first wanted consumers to know the amount of the subsidy they might be eligible for. Those income-based tax credits can dramatically reduce premiums for people with modest incomes, and personal financial information is needed to calculate the subsidies. Our process allows us to show consumers plans with prices that reflect what they will pay with the tax credit they may be eligible for, Peters said. Window shopping would not allow for this. Technology-wise, requiring accounts greatly magnified the amount of work the federal website would have to do, increasing chances of bottlenecks and other problems.

Adobe Source Code Leak Is Bad News For U.s. Government

09:00, 9/10/2013 .. 0 comments .. Link

Last week, the company said that source code for Adobe Acrobat, ColdFusion and ColdFusion Builder was illegally accessed by an unauthorized third party. Security experts say that having access to proprietary source code can make it easier for attackers to find and exploit vulnerabilities in the software. For example, one fear is that attackers could exploit the code for ColdFusion, a Web application development platform, to find ways to directly access databases linked to public-facing websites. Adobes security chief is not so sure. From my experience as someone whos been in possession of the source code for five years, I dont know that it helps the bad guys very much, Brad Arkin, chief security officer at Adobe told CIO Journal. In my experience, the most efficient way of finding vulnerabilities is not spending time with the source code but directly testing the product while it is running, he said. Another potential concern is that when hackers accessed the code at Adobe, they tampered with it. In such an event, anyone who purchased Adobe software recently would have unwittingly purchased malicious code. So far, there is no evidence of tampering or malicious insertions into code or products that Adobe has shipped say people familiar with the matter. The main issue appears to be whether attackers will be able to use source code to attack business or government websites. At least 11 U.S. government agencies including the Department of Defense, the National Security Agency and the Department of Energy use Adobe ColdFusion software on publicly-accessible systems, said Randal Rioux, principal security strategist for Splunk, Inc., a company that specializes in data analysis.

Adobe Revel (for Windows 8)

The $5.99-a-month paid account allows unlimited uploads, and enables auto upload from the Windows 8 app. Uploading I was surprised to find that the Windows 8 Revel app can do an important thing that the iPhone app cannot: auto-import. For paid accounts only, however, this uploads photos as soon as they appear in a specified folder, the most likely candidate for which is the Pictures folder, where photos you shoot with the Windows 8 device are saved. So for Windows 8, Revel can act like iCloud Photo Stream. Of course, you could also set up a Windows 8 device to upload to SkyDrive . There's no camera mode to the Revel app, though, so you can't add photos from within the app. Another big thing that the iPhone version of Revel can do that the Windows 8 version can't: Upload videos. Any video entries in your Windows 8 Revel app appear as still photos, and no editing or playing is possible. Adobe may take note that SkyDrive options in Windows 8.1 let users have their photos and videos automatically uploaded to a folder on SkyDrive, which, by the way, offers very respectable online galleries itself. Viewing Revel's very simple initial interface just shows two options, Library and Albums. http://designstudio.sweetcircles.com/2012/08/02/tips-for-starting-a-web-site/ The first lets you select among any Revel, Photoshop.com or remaining Carousel libraries attributed to your Adobe account login. Creating new libraries requires a paid account. Calling up the app bar presents options for adding photos to an Album, sharing to Facebook (more on that in the Sharing section below), deleting, viewing in "Card view" which presents a pleasing, swipeable post-card style view of your photos.

Creative Cloud Subscriptions Surge, Yet Adobe Remains Fairly Valued

The free cash flow measure shown above is derived by taking cash flow from operations less capital expenditures and differs from enterprise free cash flow (FCFF), which we use in deriving our fair value estimate for the company. At Adobe Systems, cash flow from operations increased about 35% from levels registered two years ago, while capital expenditures expanded about 60% over the same time period. Valuation Analysis Our discounted cash flow model indicates that Adobe Systems' shares are worth between $32.00 - $54.00 each. The margin of safety around our fair value estimate is driven by the firm's MEDIUM ValueRisk rating, which is derived from the historical volatility of key valuation drivers. The estimated fair value of $43 per share represents a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of about 26 times last year's earnings and an implied EV/EBITDA multiple of about 13.2 times last year's EBITDA. Our model reflects a compound annual revenue growth rate of 4.8% during the next five years, a pace that is lower than the firm's 3-year historical compound annual growth rate of 14.3%. Our model reflects a 5-year projected average operating margin of 27.5%, which is above Adobe Systems' trailing 3-year average. Beyond year 5, we assume free cash flow will grow at an annual rate of 4.6% for the next 15 years and 3% in perpetuity. For Adobe Systems, we use a 10.4% weighted average cost of capital to discount future free cash flows. (click to enlarge) Margin of Safety Analysis Our discounted cash flow process values each firm on the basis of the present value of all future free cash flows. Although we estimate the firm's fair value at about $43 per share, every company has a range of probable fair values that's created by the uncertainty of key valuation drivers (like future revenue or earnings, for example). After all, if the future was known with certainty, we wouldn't see much volatility in the markets as stocks would trade precisely at their known fair values. Our ValueRisk rating sets the margin of safety or the fair value range we assign to each stock. In the graph below, we show this probable range of fair values for Adobe Systems.

Adobe Hacked: Cyber-Thieves Accessed Credit Card Information Of Nearly 3 Million Customers

said a cyberattack on its systems has exposed credit-card information of 2.9 million customers. The maker of Photoshop and other software said Thursday that the attacker accessed Adobe customer IDs and passwords on its systems. Through that, they were able to remove customer names, encrypted credit and debit card numbers, expiration dates and other information related to orders from customers worldwide. The company does not believe attackers removed credit and debit card numbers that weren't encrypted. Adobe is notifying customers and resetting passwords. It has alerted banks processing Adobe payments to help protect customer accounts. It is also working with federal law enforcement on its related investigation. "Cyber attacks are one of the unfortunate realities of doing business today," Brad Arkin, Adobe's chief security officer, wrote in a blog post Thursday. "Given the profile and widespread use of many of our products, Adobe has attracted increasing attention from cyber attackers." The San Jose, Calif., company says it is also investigating illegal access to the source code of numerous Adobe products and believes the attacks are related. Adobe shares fell 64 cents to close at $50.88 Thursday and were unchanged in after-hours trading. Adobe source code breach - is it a gateway for new malware and exploits?

But if there *are* new zero-days found via the source, won't it be the crooks that find them? As a commenter on our earlier article pointed out: Opening up the source code to uninvited criminals is very different from opening it up, as open source, to the public at large, so we now have the worst of all worlds. Obscurity of still-closed source code known only to the owners and a team of people intending to exploit it. That can't be good. Those are reasonable fears, since the only "new eyes" on the source are going to be those of criminals. So, even if possessing the source bestows only a tiny advantage, that advantage won't be used for good. Do you think these "new eyes" will focus Adobe on reviewing its code promptly, and thus be a silver lining? I think you can guess the answer to that question for yourself.

The Amazing History Of London's Most Enduring Logo

Learn more about Rackspace's hosting solutions here . Logo design is one of the first considerations for a founding team of a new company. It's also a carefully navigated quagmire for an aging brand that needs a refresh. We've consulted a panel of web design and logo experts about the basics and not-so-basics of creating a great logo for new and not-so-new web-based companies. In this three-part series , we'll share their insights on trends, hiring designers, typography and more. Our panel includes UK logo designer Graham Smith , designer and logo design blogger Jacob Cass , and Raj Abhyanker, CEO of Trademarkia , a firm specializing in trademarks and logos. Read on for their advice, and designers, please share your own experiences and opinions in the comments section. Biggest Challenges for Startups Cass says that one of the most difficult aspects of logo creation for startups is finding a logo designer whose work is good and who is still within a startup's meager budget. If you don't have a stellar logo designer on your founding team, and if your product needs more than a bare-bones logotype, hiring this kind of talent on a shoestring budget can be a challenge. Smith echoes this concern, stating that startups' main challenge is "to not look like they have purposefully spent all their money on coffee and code and have not put aside any funds for things like the logo design and other marketing avenues. "They of course may have limited funds, but unfortunately this will reflect badly on them regardless.

Logo Design 101: What Is a Logo?

london-underground-logo Heres a couple of examples of logos from brands with some very loyal fans. What makes a good logo? The very best logos all have the following qualities 1. They are simple. Logos need to work in black and white as well as the colors you may choose. They need to work at different sizes. You may need to place a small logo on a baseball cap and use that same logo on the side of a bus. The logo might be required for use on a web site as well as a newspaper or on TV. To achieve all of this simplicity is required. 2. They are aesthetically pleasing. A logo can be a typographic treatment or a symbol (or both) but it needs to be eye catching and appealing to the viewer.

Business education is for 'people, planet and profit' and IIM-Kashipur's logo identifies with all the three, he says. "The symbol derives inspiration from this triad (people, planet and profit) and tries to depict a central conscience through the blue triangle within the larger triangle. The larger triangle swirls out in all the three directions yet maintains its colour - the conscience," said Sinha, explaining the logo he had designed for the youngest of IIMs. Gautam Sinha, director of IIM-Kashipur, wanted the logo to also depict the geographical location of the institute in the hills. "Colour blue is for education and color grey means it can either become black or turn white, the conscience," said Anil Sinha who is principal designer at NID. IIM Kashipur began operations in 2011 under the mentorship of IIM Lucknow. It currently offers only one course, a two-year full-time residential post-graduate programme (PGP) in management. Anil Sinha has also designed the logo for the Central University of Gujarat which was constituted under the Central Universities Bill-2009 and began functioning in March 2009. In the logo for the Central University, the letter 'Ga' of the Gujarati alphabet stands for Gujarat. Ga' is inside and at the centre and it transforms into the letters C and U to show that the central university is located in Gujarat.

Page Zero pops up as you type in the search bar on Bing, and if you're searching for two similarly named people then it allows you to identify the correct subject of your search before the results are listed. For certain queries you might even get news, images, or video links, and common actions like check-in will be displayed on airline queries. Another change is Pole Position, a new area at the top of the search results that answers queries directly. If you're searching specifically for "pictures of Katy Perry" then they'll be displayed inline at the top of the results. Pole Position will be used by Bing when it's confident it has the correct result for the query, usually when it's very specific. If you searched for "New York weather" then the current weather in that region would be displayed, and facts like celebrity ages would also be shown clearly at the top of the page with a source link. Social now fully integrated into Bing Microsoft is also combining its Snapshot and Sidebar features into a single view that will provide factual information about a query and social input from friends on Facebook or Twitter. The company seems more confident with its social results than ever before, bringing them inline increasingly. It has been a selling point for Bing, but it's now being raised to a level where many more users will notice and interact with it. Even more design changes planned Most of the design changes are subtle, but Microsoft is testing more radical overhauls of the search results layout. "This design is really like a new framework for how we think about color, fonts, spacing, all those things," explains Ripsher. "Because we've done a ground up redesign, we're in this position that we can vary and tweak any one of those variables independently or together." Ripsher says his team has tested colors and pushed some aggressive designs to users, but it's a delicate balance of what works best.

It's true that there have been occasional attempts to abandon it. In 1933, the Underground Group was renamed to be London Passenger Transport Board. Although "Underground" had previously looked satisfying written across the Roundel's blue bar, the London Passenger Transport Board's name was just too unwieldy. It couldn't quite squeeze in. And attempts to ditch the Roundel to accommodate the Underground's longer new name proved wildly unpopular. When it was clear that the symbol itself could not be abandoned, the abbreviation L.P.T.B. was crammed into the Roundel's topmost semi-circles, and a thick line was added to the inside of the ring to visually counterbalance the extra weight of the letters. Even this solution, though, didn't last. In what Lawrence refers to as a "unique and interesting example of an organization changing its outward facing name just to suit an iconic symbol," the L.P.T.B. eventually renamed itself to London Transport. What makes the London Underground Roundel so unique amongst logos? "It is one very few symbols in the world that represents a city, a place, a transportation network, and an experience of place, all at the same time," Lawrence tells Co.Design. "People associate the Roundel with their time in London, and from that cultural association, it has moved into an entire network of counterculture uses and appropriations." In fact, the Roundel has made the leap from train platforms to fashion labels, record covers, club fliers, beer labels, and more. Even better? The Roundel stays classy and elegant no matter where it goes, with none of the implied hokeyness of similar symbols like, say, the "I (Heart) N.Y." slogan.

The DO's and DON'TS of Graphic Design with Studio Lin

AlexLin1.jpg Loris, SC (PRWEB) August 29, 2013 Powerful graphic design is the stepping stone to success; just ask McDonalds, Apple, Staples, or Nike. People recognize their branding because it is memorable and is representative of their product and reflects the company's personality. It isn't hard to see how innovative graphic design and branding has helped turn companies into household names. Had they allowed their secretaries design their logos and produce a marketing campaign to save money, those corporate identities would not be what we know today. Using professional designers is a vital step towards successfully branding a company. Company Logos incorporate colors, shapes and symbols that have meaning to the company itself. A given company often gets one chance to make a first impression, and it must be the best and right one that accurately identifies the company it represents. "Every day from business heads tell me that a secretary, daughter or son designed a logo for them for free or my personal favorite, that they just don't have the money in their budget so they do the design themselves," says Amanda Welch, Senior Graphic Designer at CMMS Studio in Loris, SC. Just because a person owns a computer and some design software does not make them a graphic designer this would be the same as having the company's janitor handle the accounting because he knows how to balance a checkbook. Many people do not understand the importance of quality graphic design for their company. Branding is the face of a company, it is what identifies it to the world and it isn't just limited to a company logo. The supporting design work such as business cards and brochures, media kits, websites, billboards, signs, etc. are just as important.

A few years later he parted ways and created Studio Lina studio founded on a desire to explore new territory through challenging collaborations with creative visionaries in the fields of architecture, industrial design, art and fashion. In just a few years Studio Lin has created a body of work that provokes and inspires the design community. Lin challenged the audience to get in over your head and take on more than you can handle. While at 2x4, he took on way more than he could handle, by totally jumping into projects and working long hours and weekends. Lin was unsure how to start a project designing environmental graphics for the student campus center at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Feeling overwhelmed, he started to create simple pictograms of 'things students do.' Hundreds of pictograms he created were later transformed into 20-foot tall, vinyl portraits of Mies van der Rohe, welcoming the students as they entered the building. He confessed that he had no idea where he was headed. He suggests giving every project your best effort, regardless of the client or the budget.

Why Great Logo Design Is Only As Good As The Story Behind It

How to Decide What Logo Design Layout You Need

How to Decide What Logo Design Layout You Need image Image in logo text 1 Unfortunately, that doesnt always happen. Some designers will just create dozens of designs and leave it up to the client to figure out which one they like and why. Without that background texture, theres a good chance theyll never be able to fully appreciate or take pride in their .. [read more] logo. And thats a real missed opportunity. That unmistakable sense of pride is something I saw from Sound Opinions , the worlds only rock 'n' roll talk show, when I asked them about their new logo via Twitter. Within seconds, they responded asking me what I thought about their new look. Curious about the story behind the design, I wanted to learn more. They immediately pointed me to Someoddpilot, Inc. , the Chicago-based branding agency they used for the project, and thats where I had a chance to take a peek under the hood. In just two short paragraphs, they were able to provide background on the show and define their brand, one that exudes a smart, trustworthy, down-to-earth energy that encourages the audience to get involved. They also set the stage for the next evolution of the brand and their logo which they believe represents "a cleaner, crisper rendering of the brands mission: to broadcast expert knowledge, foster educated discourse, and fan the flame of musical passion that resides in each listener. When it comes to your brand identity, dont settle. Before hiring a branding agency or designer to create a new logo, dont just fixate on a graphic or wordmark.

Yahoo Intern's New Logo Design Was Way Better

During the meetings we had with the Whitney, we constantly had to deal with very critical questions but the discussions were always constructive. We really left those meetings wiser. Those ideological challenges, along with the Whitneys aesthetic mandates, led the team to the idea of responsive W, a flexible version of the letter that will bend to showcase the Whitneys featured artwork, regardless of shape or size. Ive heard that when apartment hunting, you know youve found the right place when you start imagining where all your stuff will go. Upon seeing this mark, I immediately started imagining all the designs I could make with this system, and the possibilities seemed endless, Greenbaum said. I was also struck by its simplicity. Intuitively and conceptually, it felt right for us. The designs fragile, bent line is paired with a new version of Neue Haas Grotesk, a clean sans-serif font that was designed by New York type designer Christian Schwartz. And though both Experimental Jetset and Greenbaum believe the design to be loaded with symbolism (read all about that here ), there have inevitably been detractors who view the zigzag to be, well, just sort of boring. Generally speaking, minimal structures offer a lot of space for interpretation. They require something from the viewer an active eye, an active mind, Experimental Jetset explained.

Some of these companies just look lazy and uninterested in how their visual identity might fair with the punters." As far as a "lazy" logo goes, Smith cites the "classic Beta mode" as a repeat offender in startup identity, calling it cheap and uninspiring. And, he continues, "A truly dire and unremarkable logo can have some kind of festering negative outcome." Also, Cass says startups should should think about "if they need to hire just a logo designer or a 'brand identity designer,' who would create a full visual system that represents the brand. It's also important to remember that your logo is not your brand." Smith cautions startups to realize that branding can often be the differentiating factor between two companies with similar products and ideas. "Be cunning; assume that another company might come along with a similar startup idea to yours but specifically have a killer logo and identity. If the cards fall right, they will likely create a bigger splash than the original startup.

11 Trends in Web Logo Design: The Good, the Bad and the Overused

It was notably used for Vignelli Associates' 1967 rebranding of American Airlines, whose two-word name became a one-word logo in red and blue. 10. Logotypes The big boys of the web, sites such as Google and Facebook , have inspired the logo design of a generation with their utter simplicity. In many cases, those initial logotypes were less legitimate logo design and more "put our startup's name in a simple font and stick it up on the web, we'll deal with branding later." The name-in-a-sans-serif look says your company has nothing to prove and that you focus on product over promotion. If it's well-executed, it's a powerful statement to make. However, if poorly executed, it looks hasty, sloppy, juvenile and amateurish. Logotypes can also be a great excuse to play with exciting typefaces and trendy treatments, such as the embossed or letterpress look that's getting so much play these days, thanks to CSS3. 11. Nodes, Spokes and Hubs Between concepts such as linked data and the synaptic web, you had to see these designs coming. They remind us of molecular structure and K'nex, an updated take on the crop of mid-century modern Sputnik-inspired designs of the 1950s. These logos are usually intended to represent the interconnectedness of people and content on the web, or, in a more literal interpretation, computer hardware circuitry. An excellent study of this concept is Bernard Barry's designs for the 2010 f8 conference . What Trends Are You Spotting?

The Fundamentals & Best Practices of Logo Design

People generally find it easier to remember a simple image over words alone. Our eyes are drawn to visual objects and well designed logos add visual appeal to printed documents and web pages. Logo design must certainly be one of the most challenging areas of graphic design and often one that is sorely undervalued. From a personal point of view, I find it to be demanding but very satisfying when the process is finished and the customer leaves with a logo theyre happy with. The challenge of logo design is to take an idea or concept and compress it down into a symbol or piece of typography. A logo is just one part of an overall brand or corporate identity, but obviously a very important part. The perception of a company is never going to be based on a logo alone, its products, employees and service is all part of that branding, but a logo can help form a picture in the customers head. Heres a couple of examples of logos from brands with some very loyal fans. What makes a good logo? The very best logos all have the following qualities 1. They are simple. Logos need to work in black and white as well as the colors you may choose.

Depending on the needs of your logo (i.e. what contexts youre planning to use it in) can really affect what sort of layout you might need for your logo design. So heres my quick breakdown of all the layout options, with the pros and cons of each one. Icons only logo design Company logos which are just an icon create a very strong brand identity, and are usually very memorable. However, you do need to be aware of the restrictions more complex icons can be hard to print on certain materials and might be impossible to embroider (for instance). Text only logo design Text only logos will really emphasise your company name, but they can lack interest. The font choice for text only logos, as you would expect, really is vital and having some creative elements (whether its an usual name or a twist on the design) makes a real difference. Image incorporated in letters One way to make your text only logo look more interesting is to incorporate images in the letters however, you have to be careful that the letters really are clear! Icon left This is by far the most popular layout. An icon on the left means your icon is the first thing to hit the eye of your readers, followed by your text. One thing to mention though is that if your company name is relatively long that you might find it harder to fit your logo in certain contexts (i.e. on equipment or labels, or signs) whilst remaining clear. Icon right Having your icon on the right hand side means that your logo/company name is the first thing that hits you rather than the icon almost like a full stop to your name. Icon above Having your icon above gives you a square or triangular sized logo these can look very good on letterheads, or on websites but this is a harder layout to fit on signage. Circular Circular logos are very popular in particular industries especially in the food industry where their shape makes them very well suited for stickers.

Learn More Wednesday, October 2nd, 2013 Comments Lucid Software, the company behind the popular Lucidchart online flow chart and diagramming service, announced a new product in its lineup today. Lucidpress , as the name indicates, is a web-based publishing app for creating print and online content that takes on the established design and desktop publishing market. Lucid CEO Karl Sun believes that desktop software lags behind the new realities of an evolved market. His companys new app, Sun said in a statement today, aims to make it easy for anyone to create stunning content like a design pro with all the added functionality made possible in the cloud. The company also hopes to fill the gap between existing cloud-based productivity apps like Google Docs, Dropbox and similar tools, none of which feature comparable publishing tools. I had a chance to test the app before its launch and it is indeed very easy to use. If youve ever used a desktop publishing app in the past, youll feel right at home with Lucidpress, as it features the same kind of standard top-bar menu and layout options as most other publishing apps. In terms of features, it can also hold its own against similar desktop-based apps. To get started, you either pick one of the companys many templates for your digital or print project or start with a blank page. These cover all the usual bases and range from birthday books to flyers, brochures and newsletters.

10 Web design trends you can expect to see in 2013

Screen Shot 2012 12 22 at 4.52.14 PM 520x401 10 Web design trends you can expect to see in 2013 Pick a solid typeface, and maybe one with a touch of whimsy Now, don't get us wrong, we love Helvetica as much as the next designer. When it comes to picking a font-face you want to pick something super easy to read, graphic, and maybe something a little, you know, whimsical. Colin Nederkoorn, founder of Customer.io says that recently, "Proxima Nova has replaced Helvetica Neue as my sans-serif typeface of choice. They probably won't make a movie about it, but if you want a sophisticated sans-serif typeface that the lay(wo)man won't recognize, give Proxima Nova a shot." Some other good choices are Montserrat and Merriweather Sans . 3. Pick a three-color pallette & then stick to it! When it comes to picking a color pallette the key is to pick it and stick (to) it. Consistency is everything when it comes to creating a cohesive color palette for your site.

5 Killer Web Design Tips That Will Make Your Life Easier

The idea of forgetting about the size of devices will help drive better responsive design, so we will start seeing websites designed with breakpoints of all types. 2. Typography will take center stage. Web designers and developers are always focusing on the weight of things such as images and Javascript when they start building their websites. As the last couple of years have seen the first breakthroughs in web type in a very long time, this combination will inevitably drive the increased usage of typography as the central element in website design. While there are things such as @font-face to serve fonts from the server, some of which are heavily weighted the weight of fonts used for website design are often lighter than their image and script counterparts. Also, typography and layouts that are based on content areinherentlyeasier to make responsive than really complicated layouts with different types of images and JavaScripts. As an added bonus, dont be surprised to see more inventive ways of typography being displayed on websites either. 3.

Cool web design and the importance of good web hosting

web design 1 Outsourcing the coding to suitably left-brained professionals keeps creatives in the line of work they find most fulfilling: design. However, this option is expensive and is guaranteed to eat a massive chunk of the profits, driving up costs and driving away budget-conscious clients. You might be considering an out-of-the-box template solution as Option C, but if youre a serious professional, thats really not an option. Clients dont hire you to make cookie-cutter websites, and as a designer, that lack of flexibility can be a bit soul-crushing. Lets just leave that one out. So, what is the best option for a designer in this position? Its safe to say that neither of the traditional options are ideal as youre sacrificing either time or money, so lets table those for a minute and talk about something completely new, something that lets designers do what they do best create pixel-perfect, custom websites in a design program. Wouldnt that be revolutionary? Webydo, an up-and-coming web-based program claims to do just that. It boasts a smart interface that allows designers a level of freedom and flexibility reminiscent of their favorite design programs. When the design phase is completed, designers can watch their creations go live without having to write a single line of code. Analyzing the Interface: Can Designers Have Their Cake and Eat It, Too? Weve gotten our hopes up in the past. Need we mention a certain Adobe web design program that requires advanced training just to create a basic website? As any designer can attest, when using a program like that, more time is spent trying to work in the clunky design interface than it would have taken to hand-code it.

Lucidpress Launches Web-Based Design And Publishing App For Print And Online

Editor Hero This puts companies, bloggers and entrepreneurs in a bit of an awkward position; one where they constantly need to provide material, make changes and outdo the competition to stay afloat. Web designers in particular have to work with an increasingly demanding market and with the technology that is improving on a monthly basis. Take a random cool WordPress website for example; what you will find is sliders a myriad of cool looking effects, high-resolution images, video material, big galleries, creative page layouts, parallax scrolling and all the impressive little design features you can think of. Many premium WP themes, even the more subdued ones, will be creative and offer aesthetically pleasing features. High-res images and HD video are becoming the bread and butter of many big blogs. Infographics, flash animation and interactive features are what people expect, lest their attention be diverted elsewhere. Well, building bigger and flashier websites requires more than just creativity and know-how you will need a place to put your beautiful creation, so to speak. When mediocre hosting just wont do Hosting a big, functional and flashy website will require a lot of bandwidth. This is a very important thing to note for several reasons: Going over the preset bandwidth limit will cost you extra Some companies will simply pull the plug on your website if you exceed the limit A good company will offer a scalable plan Another thing to consider is whether the website will be compatible with PHP, a basis upon which WordPress and Joomla are built upon, if you are one of the many people who use these CMS platforms. The next thing to look at is uptime. A run-of-the-mill, cheap web hosting service will not provide any guaranties as to its supposed uptime, and might not even be very secure, allowing for many problems to slip through the cracks. Loading speed is yet another important factor, as it will dictate whether the visitors stick around and actually get to see all the cool features or get tired of waiting and leave. A useful feature offered by good companies is the customer support, a variety of hosting options and plans, be it VPS or dedicated servers, as well as additional services like monitoring, maintenance, backups, etc. Couldnt I just stick with a simple design and save money on hosting?

For those of you just starting out, there are a few things you should consider: Make sure it's easy to spell and pronounce: you don't want people going to the wrong website just because you decided to use a "z" instead of an "s" and a "3" instead of an "E". Keep it clean and memorable: even if your demographic is hard-core rockstars, make sure they can talk about you in front of their grandma. Word of mouth is one of the greatest advertising methods out there, you don't want to cripple yourself from the start. Don't forget to be unique: remember, the whole point of branding is to stand out from the crowd. Discuss it: once you think you've decided on the perfect name, try it out. Tell people about it; ask opinions. Sometimes when we're right in the middle of brainstorming we can't hear/see from an outside perspectives. (ie: "Farr Truccess Designs" when said outloud also sounds like "Fart Ruckus Designs", not exactly what you want to be known for.(True story. Sorry Aaron.)) Once you got the name down, it's time to move on to the graphic elements. The most important thing to remember here is that every piece should be part of the whole.

'We Eat Dandelions' 2009 / Artwork for a Boreal Wallet This illustration is completely abstract in terms of its meaning and delivery, inspired by a trip to Krakow Poland, this piece holds imagery of only personal significance. This artwork was created for the sole purpose of becoming a Boreal Wallet. Digital Collage. 'Last Bus' 2010 / Artwork for a Boreal Wallet This artwork was inspired by light at night, in particular car lights. This was a personal piece making a very direct reference to rural living. Although this artwork was eventually used on a Boreal wallet it was never created for this purpose. Illustration. 'Russian Owl' 2008 / Artwork for a Boreal Wallet This illustration was inspired by Polish/Russian artwork, most notably iconic Russian Doll design.

Some Critical Steps To Hire A Freelance 1288HB2643743

The problem is that younger designers often dont ask to be mentored, believing that more experienced designers are too busy to help them. Nothing could be further from the truth. First of all, you need to know one thing about designers who have reached a certain level of renown: they love it when people give them compliments and ask them stimulating questions about their craft. Especially younger designers. Try it email 10 of your favorite design celebrities and think of a few short but intriguing questions to ask them. The worst that can happen is that they say no, but if your questions are good enough, they almost certainly wont. Test, Then Invest Sometimes you might have to invest a lot more money, time, or resources into learning something than you initially thought. If you hate networking, for example, and know you will have to expend a lot of time, money, and energy going to networking events and building relationships with people in the design industry, you may question whether or not you genuinely need to make that investment and expand your network. Sometimes, you dont need to make a significant investment to achieve a goal. If you honestly feel that you can get by without making a particular investment, then test this assumption before going any further. This is an excellent way to learn what works and what doesnt, both in your design work and in the promoting of your freelance business. In fact, this is my absolute favorite way to learn anything related to my own design career.

Perhaps you should do these things and perhaps not. Today, were going to explore specific ways to further educating yourself as a designer, and apply what you learn immediately to becoming better at what you do, as well as being more desirable to clients. Marketing and The Unhappy Freelancer Let me start off with a story about a person I know. This person is a freelance designer who really wanted to get more quality business. His work was quite good, and he worked hard for his clients, but he was struggling with attracting the kinds of people he really wanted to work with. His clients were the lower-end type, always giving him problems when it came to payment and deciding exactly what they wanted him to design for them. This designer could have benefited greatly from learning how to properly market his services. There is definitely a right way to reach out to top clients, and there is a wrong way, and making an effort to learn the difference can make an enormous difference in your success as a freelancer. Market yourself and your work the wrong way enough times and you can do real damage to your potential to earn more and attract better clients. Learning your niche knowing the ins and outs of your client base as well as the customers they serve is the best way to tailor your marketing efforts for maximum effectiveness.

Freelance Props Designers Are A Resourceful Lot

How to Hire the Right Freelance Web Designer

designeratwork (A costume designer may call the shots on handbags and the like.) There are prop masters or artisans on staff at larger theaters, but mid-size and smaller companies bring in freelancers. Over at Theater J in the District, Samina Vieth has been figuring out how to trick-rig a battered chaise so an actor will look as if he has an amputated leg for The Whipping Man, starting performances April 18. On every show, theres one large challenge Ive never done before, Vieth says matter-of-factly as she sits in a quiet nook. She riffles through a booklet detailing the artifacts shell salvage, borrow, adapt or construct for The Whipping Man, which tells the story of a Jewish Confederate household at the end of the Civil War: candlesticks, knives, a grandfather clock, whiskey bottles and a Haggada, the liturgy for the Passover celebration. Needless to say, all of these items must smack of the late 19th century. You have to be at the right place at the right time and go scrounging and just be very resourceful, says Vieth, 28. Props are, of course, the objects that appear onstage to bolster a plays story line or to add color and plausibility to a fictional world. Objects handled by actors an envelope, a martini glass, the dead seagull in The Seagull fall under the rubric of props, but so do less-portable objects, including rugs and furniture, and atmospheric bits of stage dressing, such as an empty pizza box. Coming up with such items may require skills in carpentry, sculpting, upholstering and Photoshop, not to mention budgeting prowess and a dedication to trolling antique shops, Home Depot, party-supply stores, and eBay and Craigslist. Vieth, who has a master of fine arts degree in scenic design from Florida State University, made two dozen plaster-of-Paris clocks for Constellation Theatre Companys 2010 Three Sisters (one was broken in each performance); and this year, for the Folger Theatres The Gaming Table, she turned surgical tubing into a tapeworm. Moore, who has a bachelor of fine arts degree in crafts from Virginia Commonwealth University, has quilted and welded for recent shows, and when Olney Theatre Center presented Suzan-Lori Parkss Venus in 2004, Moore fabricated a human uterus floating in a jar (carved insulation foam did the trick). Both props designers have had to hunt down taxidermied animals. The two women say they are paid a fixed sum for labor on a given production (Moore recalls that one early freelance gig earned her a massive $250) and their budget generally falls between $800 and $3,000. Its hardly the kind of work that generates fame or fortune. Properties people are the unsung heroes of the design team, says Theater J Associate Producer Delia Taylor, who got her start as a props apprentice at the Colorado Shakespeare Festival.

Be Lifehacker's Freelance Designer

The rule of thumb is that if you need someone to make some sort of functionality work, you probably want a developer. If you need someone to make things look good and to make a developers interface usable by real human beings, you want a designer. If you do come across someone who says they can do both just as well as a designer and developer team, make sure you have some solid backing for that assertion from respectable people in the web world who are former clients of the individual. And as I hinted earlier, there can be crossover. Its quite easy to find a good designer who is also proficient at WordPress theme development (not exactly a rocket science). Just check credentials and dont assume that a web designer can develop anything for you. What to Look For in a Designer Weve discussed the technical skills you need to look for in a designer, and the difference between designers and developers. But there are more human aspects you need to look for. Looking for these traits can be problematic, since theyre not things youll find listed in someones pitch on their site or profile and if they did list them, you have no way of knowing how accurate that self-assessment is.

Ive kept busy the last few months, but I have yet to see the monetary rewards. I didnt freelance before leaving full-time employment. I prepared for the challenge by doing a short course in small business, speaking to friends whod taken similar paths, consulting recruitment agencies, and just letting friends within the industry know of my intentions. Getting Work SP: Who is your typical client at the moment? What kinds of sites have they asked you to develop? I havent been in this long enough to have a "typical client". However, most of the people who enquire about my services are small business owners who are after more than the simple template solutions typically offered to small budget clients. They dont necessarily require a big, technically advanced site, just a smart one thats effective.

While attending the university, Kincaid has taken classes in photography as well as digital photography, graphic design and jewelry design allowing her to gain knowledge in Adobe Creative Suite, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator. According to Kincaid, she has always been a creative person and before forming AK Design was involved in jewelry making and photography. I love making something beautiful that others can look at and appreciate. My favorite part of design is using words or images to help convey a particular message, said Kincaid, I enjoy everything about design. Most importantly, it makes me happy. Since forming AK Design, Kincaid has completed various design projects. In 2012, Kincaid designed the home football game program covers for the 2012 football season at Emory and Henry College and became one of the art directors for the colleges literature and art magazine called Ampersand. Kincaid also has redesigned the 2013 football season game day program covers for Shenandoah University. Over the summer, I was given the opportunity to work for Wakefield Middle School in Raleigh, N.C., thanks to my father who is their physical education and health teacher as well as their football coach, Kincaid said. After he told his coworkers about my design skills, I was given the jobs of designing the T-shirts for the Wakefield Middle School Faculty Golf Tourney of 2013 and creating a logo for the middle school basketball and football team. Kincaid also has been in a long distance correspondence with the company C&M Designs in Winston Salem, N.C. She designed a banner and an advertisement for them. Over the years my immediate family and relatives have helped me establish connections.

IVSAA is the only art school in the country registered with Icograda. Siddiqui is a self-taught graphics designer, there are more people in the market than are usually needed and even freelance work is difficult to come by. His competition comes mainly from his fellow IVSAA students, the Karachi School of Arts and University of Karachis Visual Arts Department. This budding young prospect is filled with optimism for design professionals in the country. The last three to five years have seen a boom in digital media with increased advertising and social media, he says.

Cloudy with a chance of Photoshop

Photoshop Layers Layers are a powerful feature of Photoshop that allow you to work on one part of an image without disturbing the rest of it. While the concept of layers may seem intimidating at first, once you get the hang of using layers youll wonder how you ever survived without them! The examples on the next page show how the layers in the Photoshop document to the right stack together. The transparent parts of any layer, shown by the checkered grid, allow the layers beneath that layer to show through. You can show and hide each layer in an image by clicking on its corresponding eye icon in the Layers palette, as shown at the bottom of the following page. To organize your layers, you can arrange them into layer groups by going to Layer > New > Group. Each layer group displays in the same way as any ungrouped layers on the Layers palette. A layer group is signified by a folder icon. You can collapse or expand layer groups by clicking on the triangle to the left of the folder icon, and nest layer groups within each other by dragging one folder icon into another.

Shapewear Photoshop Fail Is Super Scary (PHOTOS)

fail Scary Skinny Someone messed up big time with this unrealistically photoshopped waist on Nordstrom's website. We're so distracted by her startlingly small torso that we can't even focus on the cute orange polo shirt. Note: This caption was edited for clarity's sake. Set's Very Flexible Model Russian model Anna Selezneva has been stretched to her limit in this photo for German label Set. While her left leg is lifted onto a couch, her right leg has been attacked by some vicious monster that bit right into her thigh! Paris' Plastic Cover Is it just us, or does Paris Hilton looks faker than ever on this Vanity Fair cover? Her strangely smooth face actually sort of creeps us out to be honest. Talbot's One-Legged Model Does anyone else feel bad for this victim of retouching madness? This Talbot's photoshop abuser settled on giving this poor model only one leg. Lancome's Wrinkle-Free Ad For being 44 years old, Julia Roberts looks pretty near amazing. And while the actress still looks pretty in this Lancome ad, we just wish they didn't make her skin look so freakishly smooth. From the looks of it, the retouchers airbrushed the life out of Julia Roberts' face, and gave her a plastic visage instead. Something's Off About This... Victoria's Secret, who is a notorious fan of photoshop abuse, was up to their old tricks again.

Picture this: Is there life after Photoshop?

Photographer We used the Content-Aware move tool to move a person in a crosswalk. By clicking the twisted arrow on the bottom right of the Tools panel, we outlined the objects we wanted to move and dragged the item where we wanted. After we let go of the mouse, Photoshop Elements paused for about five seconds before the old spot filled with new content. Photoshop Elements successfully moved the person, but had trouble filling in complex backgrounds. When we tried to move a man standing in front of a school bus, the resulting hole was a jumbled mess. We had to play around with the settings to make sure that it moved all of the person sometimes, limbs and heads would get cut off and not too much of the background. Pet Eye Correction As its name suggests, Pet Eye Correction in Photoshop Elements 12 is an eye-color corrector specifically for animals and pets. On a picture of a dog whose eyes looked ghoulishly yellow (thanks to the camera's flash), we easily fixed the eyes with a few simple clicks. The resulting photo looked natural at first glance, and even upon closer inspection, it was difficult to tell that the picture had been doctored. Straighten Photoshop Elements 12's Straighten tool lets users easily adjust pictures where the horizon is not perfectly horizontal. On a slightly slanted picture of a dog in a doorway, we drew a line along the tilted door frame. The site program paused for about 3 seconds before adjusting the image with the door frame, which became parallel to the canvas. What's nice about this tool is the Autofill Edges feature. Like the Content-Aware move tool, Autofill Edges populates the white space in the corners with information from the picture. The image population isn't perfect, but it does a nice enough job that its flaws will escape the untrained eye. Auto Smart Tone Auto Smart Tone offers joysticklike controls to adjust brightness and contrast in a gridlike interface, rather than traditional slider bars.

On it, the group makes your photos all beautifulor, as We Do Beauti says, "tunes" the images. The results are idealized, often unrealistic, images of beauty that exist in South Korea. We Do Beauti has just gotten started, so the page hasn't quite reached critical mass yet.

Painted areas are now selected= Boxed software can be used for years and years at no extra cost. A monthly subscription can end up being a bigger chunk of an already tight budget. For freelances or small and medium-sized businesses, switching photo editing software could save a lot of money Adobe has moved many of its other legendary software titles to a subscription-based service too, but has left Lightroom, another of its popular photographic tools, alone for now. It still comes in a box and does some of the tricks that Photoshop is well known for, but at a fraction of the price. There are also well-established alternatives, such as Corel's Paintshop Pro and the open source GIMP software, which are also filled with features. Yet if you have been browsing the desktop app stores recently you cannot help but notice a proliferation of newer, more nimble and niche photo manipulation software titles that sell for less than a single month of an Adobe subscription fee. Fotor is free and is claimed to be one of the most downloaded photographic apps globally, offering quick and easy scenes and adjustments. Patricia Tietgens, its spokesperson, says that Fotor appeals to people and companies that do not necessarily make money directly from their images but need a solid editor.

Korea's PhotoShop Trolls Turn to Beauty

Korea Photoshopping heaven As anybody who uses it on a daily basis will tell you, theres really no other photo editing software as powerful and feature-packed as Photoshop. It may have a steep learning curve, but once you grasp its keyboard shortcuts and learn the basics, you can create magic with Photoshop. Photoshop CC is no different the interface has had some very minor tweaks but if youve used Photoshop CS6 before, itll look practically identical. However, what Photoshop CC adds is a number of new tools, most notably a Camera Shake Reduction filter (accessible from Filter\Sharpen\Shake Reduction in the menus). This filter actually reduces motion blur caused by camera shake and actually produces a much sharper photo from a shot that is normally unusable. In use, it actually works okay and there are a number of sliders that allow you to increase or decrease the effect. There are limits to how much shake can be reduced in a photo but if youve ever had shots that have been ruined by slight camera shake, this may actually be able to save it. Again something that will interest photographers is that Photoshop CC also features an improved upscaling feature if you want to enlarge your photographs beyond its original size. It does seem to do a good job, although again, dont expect it to add details back into an image where there was none to begin with. Adobe has also made some interesting changes to how Camera RAW works in Photoshop CC. With previous versions of Photoshop, Camera RAW would only open as a separate app when you first open a RAW file, after which the photo would be imported into Photoshop proper. Now, if you were editing in Photoshop and suddenly wanted to go back to editing the RAW file in Camera RAW, then youd lose all the changes made in Photoshop.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 12

If you'd like an object in your photo, say, a kid, to be closer to another object, say, a parent, then content-aware move is your best bet. It lets you select the object, and reproduces the background to replace the area where it used to reside. When I tried this, the background wasn't perfectly simulated, but a few strokes of the healing brush produced a thoroughly convincing result. Another fun trick with this tool is that you can duplicate your subject by choosing its Extend mode. New guided edits. In between Photoshop Elements' Quick and Advanced modes come Guided Edits. These ease the creation of those splendid images that professional designers laboriously craft with complex layers, and effects. Zoom burst is a striking effect that's pretty difficult to pull off in the conventional wayyou zoom out the camera lens while shooting a subject, who's likely to be moving, since this is usually an action shot-type effect. Photoshop Element's new Zoom Burst guided edit simplifies the process drastically. The guide first has you crop to put the subject in the center, and then simply adds the dazzling radiating streaks. Two more refinements let you add a focus area and a vignette, and I must say my zoom burst of a baseball player was intensely striking. One serious and one fun tool round up the new offerings: Old Photo Restore and Puzzle Effect. The restore photo guided edit brings together tools like healing brush, clone stamp, blur, and spot remover.

The Fundamentals & Best Practices Of Logo Design

How to Design a Company Logo for a Soap Business

Abhyanker takes a similar approach, saying a large concern for startups is "standing out from the crowd, being distinctive and suggestive of the goods and services offered while serving as a marker to identify the logo owner's company." He also introduced the dual concepts of simplicity and distinction as primary considerations for startups' logo designs. "A logo is really the first core message, the identity, that any brand provides to the world. And it has to be a logo that will work not just on a website homepage and on business cards but also as its Twitter or Facebook icon. So, you want it be distinctive and yet simple at the same time." Traditional Versus Web-Based Company Logos Abhyanker makes a salient point about one of the main differences between traditional and web logo design.

Logo Design 101: What Is a Logo?

london-underground-logo The logo design entry must symbolize the arts and/or the town of Marblehead; and must include the text, "Marblehead Festival of Arts," and the Festival dates, "July 3-6, 2014." Designs should be adaptable to the silkscreen process used on T-shirts, posters and banners; the embroidery process used on polo shirts and caps; black-and-white and color printing; and it should be adaptable to wide variations in size. Since the logo may be used on a colored background, it should be designed with this possibility in mind. Designs are limited to two colors in any medium. (Black is considered a color, and two shades of a color are considered two colors). Entries are limited to five per applicant. Each entry must be mounted on an 8 x 10 board. Name, address, telephone number and e-mail address must be placed on the back of each entry. For black-and-white entries, color may be indicated as an overlay. Artwork must be original; no copyrighted designs will be accepted. Artists creating their designs digitally are also requested (but not required) to provide the Festival with copies of their files, which may be submitted on CDs that accompany their printed entries. All fonts should be converted to outlines. Entries must be received no later than 5:00 pm, Sunday, November 10, at the Abbot Public Library, 235 Pleasant St., Marblehead, MA 01945. A panel of independent judges will select several finalists, and the winner will be determined by a vote of the general public. The winning logo will become the sole property of the Marblehead Festival of Arts.

Yahoo Intern's New Logo Design Was Way Better

They need to work at different sizes. You may need to place a small logo on a baseball cap and use that same logo on the side of a bus. The logo might be required for use on a web site as well as a newspaper or on TV. To achieve all of this simplicity is required.

A bright soap logo with bold shapes and colors is more likely to appeal to children. 2 Identify the key selling point of your soap -- what sets it apart from others on the market? For example, if your soap is made from all-natural ingredients, you will want to create a logo that will make your customers think of nature. You can do this through colors -- greens and browns -- or designs -- using a tree or grass as part of your logo, for example. 3 Design several potential logos. There are three types of logos: logos that highlight a company name (think IBM), logos that illustrate what a product does, or abstract logos that symbolize a brand (like Nike's swoosh). Experiment with logos in each of these categories to see what works for you. You can create a logo by hand or use computer programs such as Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator. As you work on your design, keep your target audience and message in mind. 4 Review your logo with friends and business associates. Ask what they think of when they see your logo. Does your message come through clearly? Show them your logo next to logos from other soaps.

How to Decide What Logo Design Layout You Need

How to Decide What Logo Design Layout You Need image Image in logo text 1 So heres my quick breakdown of all the layout options, with the pros and cons of each one. Icons only logo design Company logos which are just an icon create a very strong brand identity, and are usually very memorable. However, you do need to be aware of the restrictions more complex icons can be hard to print on certain materials and might be impossible to embroider (for instance). Text only logo design Text only logos will really emphasise your http://designstudio.sweetcircles.com/2012/06/24/web-content-a-priority-not-yet-understood/ company name, but they can lack interest. At the same time though, fitting a circular logo onto a pen (for example) really wouldnt work.

Logo Design 101: Six Tips For Creating Iconic Logos

Lego The Fed Ex logo features an arrow between the letters E and X, representing the idea of moving parcels from place to another. 6. Aim for longevity. While many logos will be updated over their lifetime, its probably not a bad idea to design something which will not look dated after a year. Avoid trendy fonts and symbolism. The Coca-Cola logo is among the most recognized logos and brands in the world. The logos distinctive cursive script has not changed dramatically over its long lifetime. These are, of course guidelines and pointers.

Sumopaint is somewhat modeled like Photoshop, but the tools that come with the free version are not as capable as those of the latter. The Symmetry tool creates kaleidoscope-like patterns with ease, and the various Polygon tools make interesting star patterns. While these tools are fun, they may not contribute much to image editing. But Sumopaint still has a load of other features, including basic image editing tools to mimic a watered-down version of Photoshop with mid- to high-performing capabilities. Image: Sumopaint. 3. PicMonkey PicMonkey is a web app good for fun photo editing with Instagram-like filters. Similar to other online image editors, PicMonkey offers free and pro versions. PicMonkey has some interesting blemish-fixing tools, including airbrushing, wrinkle-removers and even "mascara" and lip tints. Auto Smart Tone Auto Smart Tone offers joysticklike controls to adjust brightness and contrast in a gridlike interface, rather than traditional slider bars. Each corner of the grid represents the extreme settings, where a thumbnail shows what your image would look like. Drag the controller in the middle of the grid to choose the desired levels of brightness and contrast. Move to the right for brighter images and to the left for darker images, and get higher contrast by pulling the controller down the grid and vice versa. The controls were easy to manipulate, but we also like that you can still use the traditional Brightness and Contrast settings. Auto Smart Tone also learns from your behavior.
