When setup Mercedes Benz star c3, you maybe come across such fault "Error during initializing, no link could be established between the diagnosis gateway and the control unit" as the following shows.




I give you a solution that is to check whether you set right COM Port. If you buy star C3 from uobd2.com, please set the COM Port as follows.


First step: right click "my computer", and then click "Properties".



Step 2: Under the "System Properties", first click "Hardware"and then click "Device Manager".


Step 3: under Device Manager, click Communication Port (COM2), open the Communication Port (COM2) Properties, then click "Port settings", please be sure "bits per second :115200, then click "Advanced", under the "Advanced settings for COM2", please be sure the COM Port Number is "COM2"




Step 4: your Mb star C3 is ready to work.




MB STAR C3 Error what you will encounter when you use it:


Have such error usually have following reason:

1. Your computer do not have serial port. You use USB to RS232 convert. This will cause no communication. If you do not have computer have serial port, you can buy IBM T30 from us(but please notice IBM T30 is a second hand laptop)

2. Your computer have serial port but your com port setting have problem.You can check above resolution methods.

3. If the 1 and 2 all not the reason, the multiplexer may have problem. If you have other multiplexer beside you, you can try other interface and find out where is the problem. If the machine you buy from us have such problem, please email to esldomino@gmail.com to contact us.

Way to fix a misfiring car

Answer: Improve


There are a few things to do to when trying to diagnose a misfire. All vehicles are different, but there are a few places to start.
1)If possible use an OBDII scanner on newer vehicles. The misfire counter function can help you determine which cylinder is behaving badly. Clearly this is not an option for all people and vehicles though.

Note)Even without engine scanners you can identify which cylinder is causing a dead misfire. Carefully disconnect one spark plug at a time. If the cylinder you are disconnecting is operating properly you will hear a change in RPM. If the cylinder you disabled is the bad cylinder you will see no change in engine behavior.

2)Check your ignition system. There are several steps to this.

A)Remove spark plugs and check to see if the electrodes look worn down or contaminated. Check your spark plug gap with a plug gapper to see if the electrode has worn down.

B)Use a multimeter to check your spark plug wire resistance. They should read roughly between 2,000 - 12,000 Ohms. What you are really looking for is an open circuit in one of the wires. Bend the wires around and see if you lose continuity.

C)Check cap and Rotor. Look for carbon tracking or extremely worn down rotor.

D)On newer vehicles with distributeless ignition systems coils are prone to failure. If you know which cylinder is misfiring try swapping that cylinder's ignition coil with another cylinder and see if the misfire moves with it.

3)If you know your ignition system is operating properly you may want to check compression. You may already have the spark plugs out from your ignition check so it only takes a minute to check engine compression.

4)Fuel injection Service - The motorvac service works miracles. It is available at most repair facillities. Adding a can of fuel injector cleaner to your fuel tank is not ecnough to clean out a severely plugged injector. The motorvac solvent is much more potent and should only be used with a fuel injection cleaning machine. It is a good place to check with a hard to find misfire.

5)Vacuum leaks - A vacuum leak will cause a misfire. If the leak is near a certain cylinder that cylinder will misfire. You can try to find a leak by spraying down the engine carefully with carb cleaner. If you spray the location of the leak the RPMs will rise. You can also inject the intake manifold with smoke from a smoke machine and look to see if it leaks out anywhere it is not supposed to.

Can E15 Gasoline Really Damage Your Engine?

Most people realize that all of us burn gasohol—a mixture of gasoline and alcohol—in our cars. Just about every gallon of gas pumped today contains as much as 10 percent domestically produced ethanol. Gummed-up fuel systems, damaged tanks and phase separation caused by stray moisture infiltrating fuel systems have plagued many consumers since this mixture debuted, and the problems will only get worse if government policy to increase the proportion of ethanol to gasoline is implemented. Don't get me wrong: Gasoline diluted with ethanol is a perfectly acceptable motor fuel when it's stored properly, dispensed promptly and burned in vehicles and power equipment designed to handle it. Which, unfortunately, is not always the case.

Moonshine It's Not


That 90:10 mixture of gasoline and alcohol is referred to as E10, while a different blend of 15 percent gas and 85 percent alcohol is sold regionally as E85. On this scale, straight petroleum-based gasoline is referred to as E0. Most gasoline dispensed from pumps in this country is as much as 10 percent ­ethanol, distilled from corn grown in the Midwest. This alcoholic cocktail was originally mandated by the EPA as a replacement for MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether), an oxygen-bearing petroleum-sourced chemical that was added to pump gasoline starting in 1979 to reduce carbon monoxide emissions in some regions that had problems meeting government air-quality standards. The oxygen in the MTBE (and ethanol) molecules can substantially reduce CO emissions in vehicles without modern closed-loop fuel-injection systems, which were introduced ­starting in the '80s.

Soon after, MTBE started turning up in groundwater, affecting the taste and smell of drinking water, so ethanol was substituted. (Shockingly, MTBE isn't considered toxic or even carcinogenic in the concentrations found in groundwater, but still.)

However: If the beneficial effects of oxygenated fuel have largely been bypassed by modern feedback-loop injection systems, which control the air-to-fuel ratio much more closely, why is ethanol still in your fuel? Because the second President Bush made a decision to offset some of our dependence on foreign oil with domestically produced alcohol, and the Corn Belt senators agreed. Ethanol plants have mushroomed, ramping up U.S. production from 1.77 billion gallons in 2001 to 10.75 billion gallons in 2009. Politics aside, odds are near 100 percent that there's as much as 10 percent alcohol in the gasoline you're pumping into your car and that 5-gallon can you use to fuel all your other gas engines.

Keeping Water Where It Belongs


The ethanol in your gas tank is uniformly dissolved in the gasoline. Alcohol tends to absorb and hold water, and in concentrations in the tank up to about 0.6 percent, any water remains in solution, presenting no problems. (Yes, there are other problems with alcohol in the fuel system, but we'll get to them later.) How does water get into the fuel tank? It's possible that water dripped into the tank at the gas station or ­refueling depot, or a stray raindrop or snowflake made its way into your tank or jerrycan, but most water infiltration is from condensation. As the temperature in a tank changes, air has to be vented in and out or the tank will bulge or split. Incoming air carries moisture. When the H2O in the gas gets above a critical percentage—its saturation point—all of the water and alcohol drops out and settles into the bottom of the tank. This is what chemists call phase separation; the various components of the fuel are no longer a homogeneous mixture.

But phase separation does not occur only from increased water concentration, which is actually unlikely in a modern, emissions-sealed automotive fuel system. The temperature of the fuel is a factor as well. Here's the scenario: You fill up the car or gas can with fuel that, for a variety of reasons, is near its water-saturation point and at 60 degrees. Overnight, the temperature drops 20 degrees, and all the water and alcohol settle out even though no extra water has crept in. Guess what? The engine won't run when the fuel pickup is sucking up the alcohol–water mix.

Worse yet, the gasoline remaining above the water has probably lost three octane points, because today's gasoline relies heavily on the high-octane equivalence (130) of alcohol to achieve its octane rating. It's also missing a bunch of additives that stayed in the alcohol—so the entire tankful should be drained and disposed of as hazardous waste.

And no, adding more alcohol, in the form of fuel-line de-icer, lacquer thinner or cheap vodka will never restore that gasoline to usefulness. You don't want to add yet more alcohol, lest the increased concentration turns your ­carburetor float to Jell-O. The only acceptable way to attempt to save the gas in the tank is to add a large amount of gasoline that's got a very low moisture content. Problem is, there's no good way to tell if pump gas has a little or a lot of water on board. You stand the chance of having twice as much phase-separated, unusable gasoline as before. Better to dispose of the whole tankful.

2011 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe Test Drive

Monticello, NY—On the heels of the CTS Sedan, the CTS and CTS-V Coupe share the sedan's platform and drivetrain in a two-door package that's shorter vertically and longitudinally as well as wider. The 2+2 Coupe's design carries through the concept car that was introduced at the Detroit auto show in January 2008. Cadillac intends the CTS family to appeal to an entirely new segment of buyers who have traditionally preferred European styling, performance and handling attributes. While not everyone is enamored of the new art-and-science design philosophy, it certainly speaks for GM management's willingness to take a chance and let the designers sculpt a vehicle to which most people will have an emotional response.

The Specs

Dimensionally, Caddy's new Coupe rides on the same wheelbase as the sedan, but it's 2 inches shorter, and there are 2 fewer inches hanging ahead of the front tires. The seat has been lowered have an inch to compensate in part for the lessened headroom, while the rear track is 2 inches wider for better grip. The windshield is laid down a further degree, to boot. There is no B-pillar, for a clean look.

The base engine is a normally aspirated 304-hp direct-injection V6, available with either the standard 6-speed manual or 6-speed Hydra-matic transmission. The CTS-V comes with a 556-hp supercharged 6.2-liter V8, and is coupled to either a 6-speed automatic or a Tremec 6-speed manual. And yes, that's more power than most of the competitors Cadillac is trying to steal customers from. The V-6 delivers 18/27 mpg (automatic) and 16/25 (manual), with the very tall final gearing in the automatic providing slightly better economy. Fuel economy numbers for the CTS-V's V8 aren't official yet, but we'd expect them to be in the same neighborhood as the CTS-V Sedan: 12/18 (automatic), 14/19 (manual).

To handle the V's extra power, Brembo cooked up a set of two-piece composite rotors. These discs use the usual cast-iron rotor with an aluminum hub that's cast in place. This new design is reportedly less prone to heat warping and less expensive than conventional two-piece rotors. Massive 6-piston front calipers up front and 4-piston units out back provide plenty of squeezing power and excellent pedal feel.

Since the CTS-V coupe is not a no-comprises sports car, Cadillac took measures to preserve the ride quality. That task falls to the adjustable magnetorheological (MR) shocks installed at all four corners. These dampers have small iron particles suspended in the oil that change the fluid's viscosity based on electrical signals from the car's ECU. These shocks first appeared on the Corvette but have now spread not only to other GM products but Audi and Ferrari as well.



The Drive

Cadillac reserved a day at Monticello Motor Park, a new country club–styled racetrack, and gave us the run of the entire 4.1- mile road-racing circuit to wring out the CTS-V. There were both automatic– and manual transmission–equipped cars parked in pit lane, and they were equipped with data-logging systems to boot. Initial impressions were, umm, impressive—the torque from idle is amazing, and the engine eagerly pulls all the way to the redline. Consequently, speed builds in frightfully quick bursts between shifts, and somehow the rear suspension and tires channel all that power to the ground with minimal wheelspin.

Aggressive cornering reveals a modest terminal understeer, enough to inspire some confidence, but not the usual American car plow. With the traction control and yaw control system turned on, it's amazingly easy to drive at a pace that would make the CTS-V competitive at many racing venues. A click of the steering-wheel-mounted button turns off the traction control but leaves the yaw control activated. A second click turns it off altogether. There's ample power in the slower corners to kick the back end around if you are determined enough. No surprise, lap times are not significantly faster or slower if you leave the system in its default mode and drive well, rather than turning it off and pushing hard.

The MR shocks provide much of the CTS-V's roll control, allowing a smooth ride over bumpy roads while providing flat cornering. The system encourages you to use up the entire racetrack and competently handles an occasion trip over the track's sawtoothed rumble strips. On more than one spot on the track, the data logger showed a 1 g of lateral acceleration, a testament to the suspension's ability keep the Michelin Pilots firmly attached to the asphalt.

The car's speed alone would intimidate anyone, but the brakes proved a worthy backstop, confidently and aggressively slowing the car at the end of the high-speed straights.

What struck us most was how easy it was to push the CTS-V from the very first lap. Placing the car is intuitive, and hitting the turn-in, apex and track-out points requires only that you look where you want to go. How fast is it? Most laps saw an honest 150 mph at the end of Monticello's long back straight. Cadillac says the car will do 190 mph, which we find plausible.

The Bottom Line

Cadillac wants this car's competitors to be the likes of the BMW M6, M-B SL600 AMG and Audi S5. The performance is certainly there, as are the handling and brakes. The question remains whether buyers of high-performance cars that generally cost substantially more will find the CTS-V's stunning performance a compelling reason to change their loyalties. At the least, those potential buyers should get behind the CTS-V's wheel. We bet it'll open eyes.

2012 Infiniti M Hybrid Test Drive

Yokohama, Japan—There's a lot to like about Infiniti's M sedan. As something of an unsung hero in the midsize luxury performance segment, it offers a plush interior with topnotch ergonomics, a uniquely swept body shape, and a leading array of state-of-the-art technology. In 2012, that goodness makes its way untainted into the new M Hybrid, along with the requisite electric motor sandwiched between engine and transmission. And while introducing a hybrid luxury car may not seem like such a novel idea these days, the M actually won't have much competition—you'll pay almost twice the price to get an electric motor or two in your BMW or Mercedes-Benz, and the sleepy Lexus GS Hybrid II is more than a little long in the tooth.

The Specs

Infiniti engineers took a look at typical hybrid drivetrains and decided to streamline the process a bit, à la the Honda Insight. Most hybrids use two electric motors—one that provides propulsion and a separate, smaller unit that recharges the battery while braking. This second motor creates a couple of problems. Aside from adding complexity and weight to the whole system, it plays havoc with the vehicle's braking system. Instead of the nice progressive feel of a standard brake pedal, hybrid brakes tend to grab as the second motor kicks in to recharge the batteries.

To combat this issue, Infiniti did away with the second motor altogether, opting instead to position a single electric motor between the 3.5-liter V6 and seven-speed automatic transmission via a two-clutch system (similar to the system in the Volkswagen Touareg). One clutch separates the engine from the electric motor and the second makes up the gap between the motor and the transmission. This makes for a considerably smoother transition between all-electric, gasoline–electric and all-gasoline power. And it means that recharging the battery doesn't yield a twitchy brake pedal. The electric motor adds 67 hp and 199 lb-ft of torque, resulting in a theoretical grand total of 369 hp and 457 lb-ft of torque when combined with the 3.5-liter six.

However, there's a slight penalty for the extra pep, as the hybrid system adds 264 pounds to the five-passenger sedan. Infiniti uses a proprietary 1.3-kilowatt-hour lithium battery pack in the M Hybrid. While it adds less weight than a nickel-metal-hydride battery, it still weighs quite a bit. All those pounds have to go somewhere, and, in this case, Infiniti chose to put the battery pack into the car's trunk.

The Drive

While the M Hybrid we drove didn't hide its weight gain, we only noticed the extra heft when muscling the car through a tight left–right switchback, which is probably something no sensible M Hybrid buyer would do on a regular basis. Driven sanely, the car motors along like its internal-combustion-only siblings. It's not quite as fast as the mighty V8-packing M56, but with the gas pedal pinned to the floor and both the engine and motor humming in coordination, the car is quicker than you'd expect.

If you keep the M Hybrid below 62 mph, it can even whisk you along on all-electric power—but that's contingent on a very delicate right foot. With the rumbly VQ silenced and nothing but muffled tire and wind noise to assail us, the M Hybrid becomes a pleasant luxury liner. Infiniti reckons that the M Hybrid will be about 25 percent more efficient than the current M37, which should mean mileage in the 22/32 mpg (city/highway) range. However, the company might do well to trumpet the M Hybrid's additional output (without the fuel economy penalties associated with forced induction or a larger displacement engine), rather than simply calling the 3.5-liter V6 more efficient. It generates 40 more lb-ft of torque than the V8-powered M56, after all.

The Bottom Line

The luxury hybrid game has been going on for several years, and several competitors are already in. But Infiniti's M Hybrid has a genuinely sporting character, without sacrificing interior comfort and technology. Heck, it even looks good, and stakes its claim as far from budget entries like the Lexus HS250h as it does from six-figure German giants. Odds are the M Hybrid will draw in buyers looking for V8 power with V6 efficiency. Expect to pay a few thousand dollars more when the M Hybrid goes on sale next spring, with a retail price likely to start at $50,000.

No surprise, lap times are not significantly faster or slower if you leave the system in its default mode and drive well, rather than turning it off and pushing hard.

The MR shocks provide much of the CTS-V's roll control, allowing a smooth ride over bumpy roads while providing flat cornering. The system encourages you to use up the entire racetrack and competently handles an occasion trip over the track's sawtoothed rumble strips. On more than one spot on the track, the data logger showed a 1 g of lateral acceleration, a testament to the suspension's ability keep the Michelin Pilots firmly attached to the asphalt.

The car's speed alone would intimidate anyone, but the brakes proved a worthy backstop, confidently and aggressively slowing the car at the end of the high-speed straights.

What struck us most was how easy it was to push the CTS-V from the very first lap. Placing the car is intuitive, and hitting the turn-in, apex and track-out points requires only that you look where you want to go. How fast is it? Most laps saw an honest 150 mph at the end of Monticello's long back straight. Cadillac says the car will do 190 mph, which we find plausible.

The Bottom Line

Cadillac wants this car's competitors to be the likes of the BMW M6, M-B SL600 AMG and Audi S5. The performance is certainly there, as are the handling and brakes. The question remains whether buyers of high-performance cars that generally cost substantially more will find the CTS-V's stunning performance a compelling reason to change their loyalties. At the least, those potential buyers should get behind the CTS-V's wheel. We bet it'll open eyes.

Target Toyota: Why the Recall Backlash Is Overblown

To judge by press accounts and statements from government officials, those innocuous-looking Toyota sedans and SUVs in millions of American driveways are somehow kin to the homicidal '58 Plymouth Fury in the Stephen King novel "Christine"--haunted by technological poltergeists and prone to fits of mechanical mayhem. In the midst of three major recalls, Toyota has been hammered by daily newspaper and TV pieces suggesting it has been slow to address safety problems. U.S. transportation secretary Ray LaHood announced that anyone who owns one of the recalled vehicles should "stop driving it." (He quickly backpedaled on that pronouncement, but warned, "We're not finished with Toyota.") Displaying a previously undisclosed concern for the safety of American owners of foreign-badged automobiles, the UAW quickly piled on. And now, Toyota's North American president Yoshi Inaba must submit to ritual humiliation at the hands of the U.S. Congress in a hearing on Wednesday.

Does Toyota--or any car company--deserve this? Well, if they are knowingly selling an unsafe car, yes. But is that what's going on here? Not so fast. There's no question that unintended acceleration is a serious problem that needs to be fixed. But a little perspective is in order. As Popular Mechanics automotive editor Larry Webster has pointed out, every major carmaker receives occasional reports of sudden unintended acceleration (SUA). In the last decade, the National Highway Transportation Safety Agency logged some 24,000 SUA complaints. Less than 50 of these red flags were investigated. Why so few? The main reason is the nebulous nature of SUA. Often the problem occurs once, never to happen again. It's tough to fix a defect that can't be replicated. And then there's the driver variable. As awful as this is to think about, it's been shown that sometimes drivers simply mix up which pedal they're pushing. In the late 1980s, the Audi 5000 was the target of a barrage of SUA allegations, lawsuits and press reports (including a notorious "60 Minutes" episode that was later discredited). Then, as now, there were accusations that mysterious electronic gremlins somehow took over the car. In the end, NHTSA concluded that driver error was the only likely explanation for the incidents.

But many safety concerns do have validity, and every carmaker has conducted numerous recalls involving critical safety features of their vehicles--brakes, steering, airbags, seat belts, and more. Still, the fact that some safety problems don't emerge until cars have been on the road for months or years is not a sign that automakers are criminally cavalier about safety. Quite the opposite. The safety issues that lead to recalls generally occur in very small numbers, often barely rising above statistical noise. Toyota's unintended acceleration problem, for instance, involved a handful of cases in literally billions of miles of driving.

As those cases come to light, it is necessary for carmakers to take action, and it is natural for consumers to be concerned. But the intensity of the backlash against Toyota is almost unprecedented. Here's what is being missed in most of the coverage of the issue: All cars are inherently dangerous. They propel their fragile human cargo at high speeds over unpredictable terrain. They combine thousands of parts that need to interact flawlessly--in environments ranging from Death Valley heat to Fairbanks cold--in order to maintain safe operation. Their radiators contain scalding fluids; their batteries are full of toxic acid; and their gas tanks hold explosive power equivalent to more than 100 sticks of TNT. And, by all accounts, Americans drive those cars faster than ever, on increasingly congested roadways.

Nonetheless, driving gets safer every year. Fatalities per mile driven have fallen more than 25 percent since 1994, in part because cars themselves are safer. Compared to those of 20 years ago, the typical vehicle today has better brakes, better steering and more (not to mention smarter) airbags. Electronic stability-control systems have helped prevent countless accidents. Still, even the best cars are far from perfect. And much of the outrage over Toyota's troubles seems based on the unrealistic expectation that cars should be infallible. That's an unattainable goal; even well-designed components can wear out and fail in unexpected ways. Recalls are not a sign that carmakers are indifferent to the safety of their customers. On the contrary, recalls are part of the process by which automakers address safety or reliability issues that are often fairly subtle.

So why did Toyota's safety issues become front-page news when similar recalls by other automakers barely made the business pages? One is the scary nature of unintended acceleration itself, which taps into our almost instinctual fear that our machines will suddenly turn on us (HAL, anyone?). Another was the horrific 911 call from the passenger of a Lexus that crashed in Santee, Calif., in August of last year. And then there was timing. Toyota responded first to the problem of shifting floor mats (the likely culprit in the Santee crash), and only later to the much more subtle issue of accelerator pedals that are slow to return to idle. Those are two unrelated problems that needed to be addressed separately. Perhaps in a different climate, Toyota could have convinced the public that the accelerator pedal recall was an example of extreme diligence in pursuit of safety. Instead, the second recall struck the public as an admission of culpability--just another shoe dropping in a much larger scandal.

By the time conversation got around to disconcerting glitches in the antilock brake system on Toyota's high-tech Prius hybrid, there was no containing the outrage. (The fact is, most hybrids exhibit slightly twitchy braking as they try to manage the switchover from the electrical braking that recharges the batteries to the hydraulic braking needed for more aggressive stops. Conditions that engage the antilock braking system only complicate that challenge.) Without the previous incidents, news that Toyota was making a small change in its Prius braking software would have been a non-story. Instead, it completed the trifecta of bad news that has made this Toyota's annus horribilis.

Crisis managers will no doubt study Toyota's handling of this issue, looking for lessons in avoiding that company's predicament. After all, it took years for Audi's sales to rebound after that company's trip through the SUA gauntlet. Still, some good did come of Audi's experience: Today all cars have interlock systems that make it impossible for drivers to move the shift lever out of park unless their foot is on the brake (thus preventing them from shifting into gear while accidentally flooring the accelerator). One likely outcome of the Toyota episode will be a requirement for a similar interlock that automatically disengages the throttle whenever the driver steps on the brake. And that would help make all cars just one, tiny increment safer than before.

2011 Sonata Turbo 2.0 Test Drive

Seoul, South Korea—Among midsize family cars, the optional engine is normally a large-displacement V6. But the popularity of that option is waning—the vast majority of midsize sedans are sold with the base four cylinders, which is the way we tested them last year.

With its new Sonata, Hyundai has ditched the V6 option altogether. In its place, the automaker will soon offer a turbocharged four-cylinder that rivals V6 horsepower but returns better fuel economy. Let's see how it runs.

The Specs

The Sonata Turbo's 2.0-liter engine is a version of the turbo engine first seen in the Genesis Coupe. Modified for front-wheel-drive duty, the DOHC engine delivers 274 hp at 6000 rpm. That's 137 hp per liter, a notable milestone even among turbocharged engines.

The motor, which runs on regular gas, is packed with subtle but interesting design features. As with most modern turbo motors, the fuel squirts directly into the combustion chamber, and both the intake and exhaust cams feature variable control. The turbo wastegate is electrically driven and computer controlled. During cold starts, the computer holds the wastegate open, bypassing the turbo to speed catalytic converter light off and reduce emissions. A crankshaft-driven balance shaft reduces vibration.

The twin-scroll turbo takes better advantage of exhaust flow into the turbine, so it comes on earlier and builds boost more rapidly. Maximum turbo boost is set at 17.4 psi. With 269 lb-ft of torque available between 1800 and 4500 rpm, the 2.0T Sonata doesn't lack for low-end grunt.

The six-speed automatic transmission has a short first gear for snappy off-the-line punch and offers better efficiency than the five-speed it replaces. An unusually compact torque converter helps shorten the transmission's length by 1.6 inches, and it's 26 pounds lighter as well.

Hyundai engineers predict EPA fuel-efficiency ratings of 22 city, 34 on the highway, and 26 overall. That's 50 percent better than the outgoing V6, and better than the V6-powered competition.

When it arrives this fall, the Sonata 2.0 Turbo will complete the Sonata lineup, complementing a 40-mpg hybrid and the value-priced GLS Sonata, which offers a 2.4-liter I-4 engine as standard equipment.

The Drive

Befitting a sedan with somewhat sporting intentions, the turbo Sonata can be shifted manually, by either the console-mounted shifter or via a pair of wheel-placed paddles. The gearbox shifts fine on its own, but we found it quite entertaining to time the shifts ourselves. The motor suffers little turbo lag and pulls cleanly across the rev band. And it displayed none of the part-throttle surging that plagues some turbo motors. With class-leading power-to-weight ratio, the Sonata Turbo should clear 60 mph in under 7 seconds. On Hyundai's oval, it easily cleared 130 mph and was still pulling.

For the turbo model, Hyundai engineers stiffened the suspension. On slalom and handling courses, the Sonata Turbo 2.0 reminded us of the Mazda 6, one of the more nimble cars in the midsize segment. Pushed, the Sonata gives up traction in the rear first, but reluctantly. We found the tires supplied a progressive, predictable sense of traction, giving audible warning before any sliding began. The only downside is that the ride quality is on the stiff side for a family sedan.

Steering is via electrically controlled rack and pinion, with enough assist to allow for easy low-speed maneuvering and reasonable control at the limit. Torque steer, sometimes seen in front-wheel-drive cars when lots of power is available, was minimal. Hard cornering showed that the seats are not really designed for aggressive driving—more for easy entry and exit—but they are comfortable enough and readily adjustable, and front legroom should be sufficient for all but the tallest occupants.

The Sonata has good-size disc brakes on all four corners, plus four-channel, four-wheel ABS, with electronic brake distribution for straight stops regardless of cargo loading. During hard stops, we found the pedal to be reassuring and progressive. Strong stopping power comes on early, before the ABS kicks in, and without much front-end dive.


The Bottom Line

The Sonata joins a segment packed with roomy four-door sedans, each well-endowed with legroom, trunk space and pleasant interior designs. With the 2.0-liter turbo engine, the Sonata stands out as a more spirited car, not to mention a more efficient choice. It's a strong contender, and if Hyundai meets the estimated sub-$30,000 price, the 2.0T will be a solid option for enthusiasts. Other manufacturers, like Buick with the Regal, are already ditching V6s for high-powered turbo Fours, and we expect the trend to continue.

Are surveillance cameras the answer to terrorism? The recent failed attack on Times Square has led to calls for more cameras in the area, while others argue that CCTV will not stop terrorists. It's true that suicide bombers would not be deterred by cameras as criminals might be, but surveillance cameras are still a powerful tool—if only the nuggets of useful information can be picked out of thousands of hours of video.

It's a lesson that has been learned in Britain, a nation said to have more CCTV cameras per head than any other. In the aftermath of the July 7 bombings in London in 2005, police were able to go back over video footage to track the four suicide bombers' movements which aided greatly in identification.

Deputy Chief Constable Graeme Gerrard, the lead on CCTV for Britain's Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) explained this type of investigation can be complicated when some of the CCTV cameras involved are privately owned. British police have the legal power to gather all relevant CCTV evidence, but the quality of the footage may be poor. And where the cameras are operated by the police it takes a lot of eyeballs to watch all those screens.

"It is too simplistic an approach to multiply the number of viewing officers to the number of cameras to be viewed," Gerrard says. "A myriad of factors come into play such as how ‘busy' the CCTV footage is, the type of facilities available to view the footage and the type of incident being viewed. Many [police] Forces have dedicated viewing rooms for CCTV with several monitors that can be viewed simultaneously by trained staff and this dramatically increases the efficiency of the evidence gathering process."

However, where high quality images can be found in video footage, Gerard believes they can be extremely valuable. He compares the importance of CCTV to other breakthroughs such as DNA and fingerprinting. A National CCTV Strategy is being pursued with the aim of improving the image quality of CCTV systems, and ACPO is working with the government and the private sector to achieve this.

More cameras mean more watchers, so system designers are attempting to automate surveillance with smart software to spot possible threats automatically. In its simplest form this is can be motion detection;|

The AWARE system, developed by Abeo Technical Solutions, LLC, includes video analytics which can classify particular objects and behaviors. In an airport, for example, it could look for people walking in the wrong direction through exit gates or loitering in restricted areas. The makers say that when properly calibrated it has a better chance of spotting security threats than a human observer.

Robert Allen of AbeoTS says that with the AWARE the operator becomes a decision-maker, rather than just a watcher.

"Our experience shows automating camera monitoring can make human monitoring completely redundant," Allen says. "We support command and control centers with camera inventories in the thousands with only two or three operators."

The security team can even be on the move, as the system can send out alerts through a variety of different channels, including pagers, cellphones and PDAs.

" In the Times Square case, the vehicle was parked in a no parking area, smoking and had its emergency flashers activated. AWARE, in conjunction with many types of surveillance sensors, can detect all type of anomalies," Allen says.

The other strength of CCTV is the ability to look back over the archive and track an individual or vehicle over a period of time.This is an area of great interest to the military, who now deploy a large number of unmanned spies in the sky and need to be able to cope with the vast amount of data coming back. In Iraq, Task Force ODIN accounted for over two thousand insurgents, partly by looking at video footage to identify vehicles linked to the planting of roadside bombs. These vehicles were then followed back in time to their origin as well as forward to locate the insurgents.

AdLib, a system produced by EchoStorm provides an automated means of coping with a large number of video feeds. The system fuses images from geo-tagged sources together and extracts data from within the images. The user can zoom in to any given point at any given instant, or extract all the sightings of a specific vehicle and establish its path over time.

The makers say adLib can already cope with petabyte-sized video databases, but the requirement is growing all the time. High-quality CCTV of the sort that Gerard believes will be essential, multiplied by an ever-increasing number of cameras, will generate a vast amount of data which grows as each new day is added to the archive.

In the end, the effectiveness of surveillance cameras will be determined by the struggle between advanced software and this mountain of data. Smarter systems should mean better alerts before an attack can take place, and faster reaction when an incident does occur. Whether this is enough to convince a public which is already suspicious of Big Brother is another matter.

Back to Basics

In 1996 the EPA mandated that the computer interface for all vehicles sold in the United States meet a common standard.AD90| AD900|AK400|AK300| This meant that aftermarket repair shops didn't have to buy a half-dozen different $2000-plus scan tools, one for each brand of car they wanted to work on.

The standard is called OBD II (On-Board Diagnostics, version II). The fuel injection, ignition system and automatic transmission on most modern fuel-injected cars and trucks are run by one or more computers. These monitor sensors that collect data from the engine and other systems all over the car. The computers send commands to the fuel injectors and ignition coils to fire the cylinders. They use the data to fine-tune the combustion process with the correct amount of gasoline and the correct ignition timing to provide efficient, clean combustion for good power, economy and low pollution. There are dozens of sensors, measuring such things as throttle opening, engine rpm, air and coolant temperature, crankshaft and camshaft position, and road speed.

It's a sophisticated, high-speed system with a lot of self-checks to keep your car running as intended for a long, long time. Tuneups are kind of outdated these days because this computer system self-corrects the fuel mixture and ignition at every crankshaft revolution. This is much better than it was decades ago, when you'd take the family bus down to the garage for that annual tuneup.

Sounds great, right? And it is--until there's a malfunction. Often, your first indication of anything awry in the engine room is that Check Engine light on the dash. The OBD II standard tags this light as the MIL (malfunction indicator lamp). When that light is on, it means that the PCM (powertrain control module) is seeing data from some sensor that, well, doesn't compute--it's far enough out of bounds that the PCM doesn't know what to do.BENZ KEY PROGRAMMER | BMW KEY PROGRAMMER| CAR KEY MAKER II GAMBIT| Fiat key programmer| Ford key copy vise| So the PCM guesses what should be a good number to substitute for the sensor's erratic output and presses on, getting you home from work. In spite of this, your car should run surprisingly well, although you may notice a slight loss of power and increased fuel consumption.

There's more. The PCM also stores a diagnostic "trouble code" so a service technician has some clue where to look for the problem. Scan tools, used to check these codes, were long the province of professional technicians because they were expensive and dedicated to one manufacturer's vehicles--a scan tool for a VW, Ford Mazda keymaker|Gambit programmer Car key master II|Hitag-2 key tool| Key code reader| for example, wouldn't work on a Chrysler. Scan tools are now inexpensive enough for car owners to buy. Or, you may just be able to borrow a scanner from the auto parts store for an hour or two.
