Computex 2011 Predictions

Posted on 13/9/2012 at 10:44 - 0 Comments - Post Comment - Link

Computex is one of the most important times of the year for PC hardware – whether you’re a manufacturer or enthusiastic follower, the Taiwanese tech show is the place to be to see the best and brightest.

After all, Computex is where the netbook craze took off after Asus showed its EeePC 701 back in 2007, and it’s typically where we first see all the tech that’ll we be buying in the September rush and that’ll appear in our Christmas stockings.

We’ve already seen some news from Taiwan, but we thought we’d put together a few predictions before the show starts in earnest and see how they come out. We’ve only listed the companies that we’re fairly sure will announce something note-worthy or interesting here, but feel free to add your own predictions about your favourite (or least favourite) manufacturers in the comments thread.Lenovo 42T4873 ,Lenovo 42Y4874 ,Lenovo 42T4901 ,Lenovo 42T4902 ,Lenovo 42Y4940 ,

AMD
All the major motherboard manufacturers will have Socket AM3+ boards, whether they’re based around the new 990FX chipset or the older 890FX one. Socket AM3+ boards are compatible with Socket AM3 CPUs and the forthcoming Socket AM3+ CPUs, but not any new APUs from AMD – the integrated graphics unit of an APU will require a completely new type of socket.

We expect the graphics front to be calm from both sides, as TSMC is still working on the desired 28nm manufacturing process. As the Radeon HD 7000-series is rumoured for production in May we might see something GPU-shaped, but we doubt we’ll be able to share that if we do.

Intel
There’s a slight chance we might see some more of LGA2011, the successor to LGA1366. Intel has form in this area, with the Intel booth at previous Computex shows featuring a wall’o’motherboards with a few next-gen examples. Typically we’ll ask a booth attendant what these previously unseen boards, only to be told that he or she didn’t know and couldn’t possibly say, but that we’re welcome to take pictures and speculate. The teases.

Nvidia
With the all-quiet on the graphics front, we expect Nvidia to be pushing Tegra 2. We saw the First Tegra 2 smartphone at CES earlier this year, and we might see a Tegra 3 quad-core device, but it’ll be a demo unit or a concept.Fujitsu FMVNBP178 ,Fujitsu FMVNBP186 ,Fujitsu FMVNBP198 ,Fujitsu FMVNBP199 ,Fujitsu FPCBP145 ,

Asus
We’re expecting a pretty strong show from Asus, who is holding an entire press conference for its Republic of Gamer sub-brand. Stay tuned for revelations from that one. Asus typically has some mental-looking motherboards and graphics cards at tech shows, plus some funky concept designs for devices – most of which wouldn’t look out of place in a high-budget sci-fi film – and some sleek laptops and netbooks.

What won't happen
We don't expect to see any news on GDDR6 - next-gen graphics cards will have a similar amount of memory bandwidth to this generation. We also don't expect to hear anything about DDR4 (or another new type of desktop memory), though Intel might surprise us on that front with LGA2011.

We also don't expect to see much news from Indilinx, despite OCZ buying it - the next round of the SSD fight will be between Marvell and SandForce.

While Intel might well show LGA2011, we doubt Ivy Bridge will present - those looking for a 3D Tri-gate transistor teaser will have to be patient.Dell PRRRF ,Dell T54F3 ,Dell T54FJ ,Dell 312-1163 , ,

Consumer laptops and desktops with Advanced Micro Devices' new 'Trinity' processors will go on sale this quarter and do battle with Intel's next wave of Core processors, based on its Ivy Bridge microarchitecture.AMD's new A-series chips LENOVO G570G Adapter , code-named Trinity, will be targeted at mainstream laptops and desktops, said AMD CEO Rory Read on the company's earnings call Thursday. The Trinity chips will succeed the current line of A4, A6 and A8 chips, code-named Llano LENOVO IdeaPad G570 Battery .

AMD will also launch new C- and E-series processors known as Brazos 2.0, for low-power and low-cost laptops. The original Brazos chips have been a huge success for AMD, appearing in popular laptops such as Hewlett-Packard's DM1z, which starts at US$399.99 LENOVO IdeaPad G570A Adapter .

The Trinity chips improve "virtually every aspect of our current A-series APUs while doubling the performance-per-watt," Read said. The company has a record number of products in design based on the Trinity chips, Read said LENOVO G570E Battery .

The Trinity chips will deliver a 25 percent performance improvement and 50 percent graphics improvement, AMD has said. The Trinity chips are based on the Piledriver microarchitecture.

Trinity will compete with Intel's upcoming Ivy Bridge processors, which will be used in a class of thin and light laptops called ultrabooks. Ultrabooks are currently priced above $800, though Intel is projecting prices to come down to $699 by the end of the year LENOVO G570AH Adapter .

The goal with Trinity is to reach "mainstream price points" and a wider range of customers, Read said. AMD has said it will push Trinity chips into ultrathin laptops starting at $500.

"We're positioned to take advantage of this continued movement into thin and light," Read said LENOVO G570G Battery . "Ultrathins are not just for the few."For the past 42 years, environmentalists have used the Earth Day to promote greener living and conservation. The date--Sunday, April 22 this year--has also become a popular one for companies looking to show off its environmentally-friendly products Lenovo ThinkPad E40 .

Tech is no exception. Here too, companies clamor for our attention to prove their eco-gravitas Lenovo ThinkPad E50 . We’ve counted a few dozen press releases the past few days, but here are some of the more notable announcements we’ve seen.On Earth Day, Philips will begin selling a $60 light bulb that uses just 10 watts of power. Before you balk at the price, consider the fact that it will last some 30,000 hours, some 30 times that of the standard light bulb Lenovo ThinkPad 0578-47B . That’s about 20 years, and each bulb is expected to save the consumer about $165 over its lifespan.

With the bulb, the company won the L-Prize, a Department of Energy competition to create an ultra-efficient light bulb. Don’t worry about the $60 price tag though: In many cases, you’ll get it much cheaper Lenovo Edge 14 inch . Philips partnered with about 280 utility companies, some of which will offer rebates on the bulb, which will bring the cost down to about $25.Sprint debuts its eco-friendly LG Optimus Elite on Earth Day, and claims that it is one of the most environmentally considerate phones available Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 13inch . The phone runs the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) operating system, and includes near-field communication (NFC) support, an 800MHz processor, 3G connectivity, and 5-megapixel camera. It retails for $30 with a two-year agreement after a $50 rebate Lenovo ThinkPad 15inch .

But that’s not what will make environmentalists heart flutter: the phone itself is made of 50 percent recycled plastic and does not include ecologically harmful materials such as PVC plastics LENOVO ThinkPad Edge E220s , phthalates, halogens, or mercury.Verizon Wireless won't release a phone on Earth Day, but boasts the fact that 75 of its retail stores have received “green” certifications from the United States Green Building Council LENOVO Edge E420s . These stores use a variety of strategies to reduce its environmental footprint.

The carrier says these green stores use Energy Star certified equipment, employ energy management systems to conserve energy LENOVO ThinkPad E425 , use low-flow toilets and plumbing, and use environmentally friendly finishes and materials in the store’s construction.3M is taking the opportunity around Earth Day to release more environmentally considerate glues used in the electronics manufacturing. The company says this makes the process of dismantling discarded electronics easier for recycling LENOVO Edge E525 . All it takes is concentrated heat to make disassembly easier.

Dell is refreshing most of its Alienware gaming laptop line, except for the baby of the bunch, the Alienware M11x. According to the company, the M11x has reached the end of its life and will be discontinued in 2012 Dell 0C852J .The ultraportable M11x has an 11.6-inch display and a compact keyboard, which is unique in a sea of big-rig gaming laptops. However, gamers seem to prefer larger displays, full-sized keyboard, and optical drives in their machines Dell 0F310J . According to The Verge, Dell will therefore be discontinuing the M11x, leaving the M14x as the smallest laptop in its Alienware line.

The M11x is still available for purchase from Dell's website, but you have to call the company for pricing info.Meanwhile, Dell will be refreshing the rest of its Alienware laptops in 2012, adding new graphics options and other hardware upgrades Dell 312-0944 C852J .

All three Alienware laptops--the M14x, M17x, and M18x--will now come with new Nvidia GeForce GTX 600 series graphics cards Dell F310J . Players can nab the Nvidia GeForce GT 650M for the M14x, and can grab the Nvidia GeForce 675M (or the AMD Radeon HD 7970M) for the M17x and the M18x.Other optional hardware upgrades include a Blu-ray drive and an mSATA port for the M14x Dell H134J , full 1080p screen resolution for the M17x, and the option to pair two video cards together in the M18x.

If you've been waiting to upgrade to a new gaming laptop, these are great refreshes--except for one thing. What about the processor? Intel's third-generation Ivy Bridge processors will likely launch next week Dell BTYAVG1 , but Dell has not yet announced processor upgrades for the Alienware line.Samsung Electronics alleged in a counterclaim to an Apple patent infringement lawsuit in a federal court in California that the maker of the iPhone and iPad has infringed eight of its patents. The W-CDMA and UMTS patents at issue in the action relate to "reliability, capacity, efficiency Dell 90NITLILD4SU1 , compatibility, and functioning of mobile devices" in W-CDMA and UMTS networks, Samsung said in its filing before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on Wednesday Dell 906C5040F .

Apple filed a patent lawsuit against Samsung in February seeking an injunction and damages on sales of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and other products. Samsung denied infringing the patents cited in Apple's complaint in its counterclaim Dell 90NITLILG2SU1 .

In April 2011 Apple sued Samsung before the same court for a previous round of products that allegedly infringed its patents relating to the iPhone and iPad devices. The two companies agreed earlier this week to attend a settlement conference on this lawsuit within 90 days Dell 906C5050F .

Samsung charged on Wednesday that Apple has infringed its patents in a number of its products. Apple's iPhones, all iPads, all iPods, all Apple computers, Apple TV, iCloud, and iTunes are said to be in infringement, for example, of a 2009 patent titled "Multimedia Synchronization Method and Device Dell 908C3500F ."

The patents that Samsung said Apple has infringed include U.S. patent numbers 7,756,087; 7,551,596; 7,672,470; 7,577,757; 7,232,058; 6,292,179; 6,226,449 and 5,579,239, which can be viewed by searching the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office website Dell 90-NFY6B1000 .

The South Korean company and its U.S. subsidiaries said that it has in its portfolio 30,665 U.S. patents, including 6,238 in the telecommunications field, as of April 18 Dell 90NFV6B1000Z .

Two of the patents are FRAND-pledged patents that Samsung declared essential to European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) standards, said patent analyst Florian Mueller in a blog post. FRAND (fair, reasonable Dell 90-NFY6B1000Z , and non-discriminatory) licenses allow companies to develop open standards by sharing information and technology.A bootable Mac OS X thumb drive comes in handy when you need to troubleshoot OS issues for yourself, your family, or your friends. It's also extremely useful for keeping your basic setup consistent across multiple computers Dell BATFT10L61 , if you find yourself switching hardware regularly; and I've had fun in the past setting up a bootable USB keychain loaded with all the apps and files I need to turn any Mac-compatible computer into a viable media center quickly and easily Dell BATEL80L9 .

With Mac OS X Lion and a new piece of free software, it's easier than ever to create a USB keychain that you can boot from Dell 90-NFV6B1000Z . All you need is a few minutes, a copy of Lion, and a USB flash drive with at least 4GB of storage (though more is preferable). The first step in getting Lion onto your USB drive is to obtain a copy of the OS itself. Unfortunately Dell BATE80L6 , the file you download from the Mac App Store to your computer deletes itself after you update to Lion, so you'll probably need to redownload the OS update.

This is a simple but slightly time-consuming process Dell 1ZS070C . Go into the App Store application and open the Purchases tab at the top of the screen. From there, you should see OS X Lion as one of your previous purchases. Click the Download button next to Lion, note the directory that it downloads to and wait for the download to finish. During testing it took me about 50 minutes to redownload the 4GB or so of content that comprises Lion Dell 312-1242 . Once the OS has finished downloading (and you've verified that Lion has landed safely in your Applications folder), you're ready to transfer it to your trusty USB flash drive. To streamline the process, download the free Lion DiscMaker app. Downloading a third-party app just to handle this process is a bit of a bother Dell M5Y0X , but Lion Discmaker enormously simplifies the process of installing Lion on a USB keychain.

Now, before you start formatting your drive, back up anything currently on your flash drive that you'd like to keep--because this process will completely erase the contents of the USB drive and rewrite it with a copy of Lion Dell NHXVW . You have been warned!Lion DiscMaker makes this part of the process a snap. Start the Lion DiscMaker app with your USB flash drive plugged in and with the Lion install file sitting inside your application folder. The app will give you the option of creating a bootable drive out of either a DVD or a USB keychain Dell PRRRF . Select the USB keychain option. (If you happen to own a Mac with a disc drive, consider creating a DVD backup of Lion. I prefer keeping Lion on a USB keychain so that I can add files to the USB drive to customize the installation; but if you're just looking for a bootable copy to troubleshoot your hardware, feel free to go with the DVD option and save yourself a little cash.)Once you've indicated that you want use a bootable drive Dell T54F3 , the app will ask whether you'd like to use a USB thumb drive or some other kind of disk. Select the USB thumb drive option again; and when prompted, choose the disk that you'd like to install Lion to. Select your flash drive and you should be ready to rock Dell T54FJ .

If you're using a thumb drive that has only 4GB of free space, Lion DiscMaker will remind you that you won't get a complete of OS X Lion package because there won't be room for the "additional speech voices" package Dell X57F1 . This should be no great loss. Select Okay and then, to confirm that you're aware the volume will be erased, click the Erase then create the disk button.

The copy procedure will take a few minutes and will open a few windows in your finder automatically Dell 312-0762 , but Lion Discmaker should automate the whole process. All you have to do is wait for your Mac to cease displaying its "Copy in progress, please wait..." message, which will indicate that DiscMaker has finished installing Lion onto your flash drive. Once that's done Dell 312-1007 , you'll have a bootable USB flash drive that fits in your pocket and can handle system recovery, OS installation, and even basic Web browsing in a pinch.

If you have any space left over on your flash drive, you can add a few of your favorite applications and files, to customize a new installation. Regrettably Dell 50TKN 7W5X09C , these files won't be accessible when you boot directly from the USB flash drive; but once the installation is finished, they can help you save considerable time while setting up a new computer Dell GRNX5 .

        Dell NGPHW AC Adapter/Charger

Of course the bootable drive that this method creates is no substitute for a fully customized Mac OS X Lion-based computer Dell NF52T , but considering how fast and easy the drive is to set up--and how much time it could save you the next time you need to reinstall or troubleshoot your Mac OS X--there's no good reason not to make your own bootable copy of Lion to carry in your pocket Dell 0F965N . Good luck!
