She caught the flu a week ago, running a fever of 102 degrees. She says she is feeling better now thanks to her survival kit, which is made up of medications, water, blankets and Netflix -- "a must." Hanson also credits her Neti Pot with helping her recover. "(It's) a life saver. ... I use my Neti Pot for everything," she said. The East Rockaway, New York, librarian says she did not get a flu shot this year "because I never have before, and I didn't think it was necessary." Besides cold and flu medication, "lots of rest and bad TV" was her prescription for survival. Of course, not everyone who got a flu shot went unscathed, as the vaccine protects only against certain strains. Nurse Rachel James , 24, got the flu shot, but ended up catching the flu anyway, alongside a "horribly painful sore throat," she said. But "I would still get the flu shot again next year to protect from as many strains as possible," she added.

Like Elites other lines of discreet products, the bag conceals its intended purpose: to carry up to six AR mags (even Magpul), a sidearm, and anything else you may need to get out of Dodge. Where other escape & evasion bags scream, I have guns, and often have exposed mag pouches, the Crossroad keeps them secure in an easily accessible zippered compartment apart from your other goodies (in the event you may have to access some items in public). The concealment compartment has its own separate exterior access with an adjustable holster included, and is perfectly sized to contain your iPad if youre not using it for CCW. A radio or water bottle can be carried in the adjustable utility pocket on one side of the bag, and a spare handgun mag or flashlight in the other. The Crossroads main compartment is lined with loop Velcro creating a modular interior in which to attach your various hook & loop accessories, and has some additional perks. Elastic straps are configured to hold emergency supplies in place or to work with MOLLE items. There is even an adjustable, removable divider included to help you keep it all organized. The bag has standard carry handles, and can also be worn over the shoulder with the supplied shoulder strap and comfort pad.

Thankfully, this Zombie Survival Kit from ThinkGeekwill fit perfectly in your bug-out bag. Okay, so the zombie apocalypse (probably) won't be happening any time soon, but there's nothing wrong with being prepared. Zombie Survival Kit Goes On Sale

zombie Yes, the machete with a 10.75-inch blade is completely real and is certainly no toy. Also included is the New York Times bestselling book The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks, the author of World War Z, which is a must have for anyone needing a bit of guidance in the wake of a zombie attack. Rounding out the kit is a first aid kit that will fix most minor boo-boos but not much else, a roll of duct tape, and a can of spam. Clearly, the machete and The Zombie Survival Guide are the main items for the kit. The machete is incredibly sharp, with a saw blade on the back, perfect for splitting decaying skulls of the undead or building a shelter from branches. It comes with a nice sheath and a wristband. The Zombie Survival Guide, while a tad tongue-in-cheek, offers a lot of guidance for any type of zombie, terrain, or situation. Here's What's Inside A $24,000 Zombie Apocalypse Survival Kit

Here But have you ever really seenor thought aboutall of the supplies a proper Zombie raid survival would take? (The scenes from Zombieland, involving Woody Harrelson and a trunk full of guns/blunt objects, don't count.) But Donal O'Keeffe , a UK-based motion designer at ITN, has done the research for you and put together a series of Zombie Survival Vehicles . Created with Cinema 4D's Physical Renderer, O'Keeffe was inspired by his interest for highly detailed cross-section 3D designs. I wanted to create naratives and characters within the details. I wanted to create a series of renders that people could spend hours looking at, to see something new with every fresh viewing. Each one was rendered and created for large format printing. Plus I felt the concept of protection from the outside world and our attempt to cling onto some form of reality was fascinating. These themes lead me to the zombie survival vehicles. Match this with me being a huge George Romero fan and you can the see where the concept spawned. The tiny contents inside the vehicles were modeled and textured by the designer, aside from a few of the more complex items (i.e. guns), which he purchased. Most of the actual cars were also modeled by O'Keeffe.

A tactical ax, however, is portable and effective. ThinkGeek's Zombie Survival Kit features a stainless-steel SOG Tactical Tomahawk, suitable for close combat or hurling from a distance at the undead. But this kit from OpticsPlanet makes me think I'm being terribly naive. The Z.E.R.O. (Zombie Extermination, Research, and Operations) Zombie Kit is the mother of all undead survival kits. For a whopping $24,000 you get oodles of tools, protective gear, cases, and weapons accessories. The kit is skimpy on weapons themselves (the company says ammo will run out during the war, so you only get two knives) but tries to make up for it with gunsmithing and laboratory equipment. Related stories Zombie shooting targets ooze gore on impact I really don't think we'll have time to use the pipette shaker and compound microscope while unloading on zombie foot soldiers, but OpticsPlanet thinks we should be searching for a cure to zombie disease while fighting. I won't list the dozens of items in the Z.E.R.O. kit, but some of the interesting tools include a tactical wristwatch that stores ballistics data, the Crimson Trace Full Size Glock Laser Grip, and the Brunton Solaris 62-watt foldable solar panel battery charger. Some of these gadgets may come in handy when civilization collapses. There's also the aluminum OPMOD Battle Mug for both drinking and smashing zombie skulls, two activities that probably go well together. Check out the funny promo vid below. Bottom line: Is the Z.E.R.O.

Your last hope: The $24,000 zombie survival kit

The Z.E.R.O. (Zombie Extermination, Research, and Operations) Zombie Kit contains a first aid kit, some special zombie gloves, a compass, some night vision goggles, solar chargers, a zombie apocalypse knife, and research equipment so that you can work on a zombie cure. Optics Planet writes: Deep within the primal centers of your brain, you realize the dead have risen to claim our once-peaceful realm. What do you do? What do you need? There is no room for error when dealing with the undead. Our Z.E.R.O. (Zombie Extermination, Research and Operations) Kittakes into account all the different aspects of surviving the looming zombie apocalypse. When the undead hordes rise from their shallow graves to wreak havoc on all decent civilization, youll need to both fight back (Extermination), and find a cure (Research). The zombie survival kit, as well as the $24,000 price tag (marked down from $31,375) seem like a joke. But OpticsPlanet is taking the zombie apocalypse pretty seriously. OK, they also kind of think its a joke.

Your zombie survival kit

While the chances of encountering a zombie are still slim, the news reports from different parts of the globe of zombie-like behavior are enough to make any person want to be prepared for any sudden zombie-like behavior. Here are tips and tricks to keep you from being undead chow. Read the biblethe Z-bible Max Brookss Zombie Survival Guide, released in 2003, is not your average zombiephile coffee table book. The book explores the reality of a zombie apocalypse and offers survival strategies against the undeadwhere to hide, how to attack, what weapons to use, and includes hypothetical situations and how to escape each unscathed. Build an arsenal Yes, weaponry is very important, but we refuse to list down which weapons exactly lest we be blamed for giving citizens the idea of arming themselves against a hypothetical zombie attackplus, itll cramp your strolling style when the mall security guards magic stick encounters your weapon (note: The mall searching wand is ineffectual against a zombie attack). But bear in mind that when it comes to fending off an attack against a rabid zombie whos lost all sense of logic and reason, the best weapon is a long-range one. Engaging a zombie who wants nothing more than to eat you is like you going into battle with a juicy, life-sized hamburger. Yum. Dress like an acrobat Brooks recommends a buzz cut and tight clothing that wont restrict your movements (so no, you cant fight zombies in your clubbing skirt), not because youll look like a badass character from Prometheus but because lumbering zombies love to grab and hold onif theres nothing to grab on to, then youll be like the slippery pig that cant be slaughtered. Home lock-down Should you be lucky enough to be safely ensconced at home during a zombie attack, make sure to always have ammo for your weapons, rechargeable lamps, canned goods, batteries, and an adequate supply of water and toilet paper, naturally. If you happen to be outside and you have no weapon available, run to the nearest auto mechanics crib (arent you glad Manila is populated with them?), grab a crowbar and head for the hills. A crowbar can help you brain a zombie before it gets to yours. Dont engage a zombie unless absolutely necessary. Running is still best.

They are multiplying, and if they are not stopped, it can become a huge issue. These zombie bees were found last fall in Vermont. They are starting to slowly take over the United States. They start off as regular honeybees, pollinating and making honey, until they are taken over by the zombie fly. Yes, there is a bug called the zombie fly. Its scientific name is Apocephalus borealis, but sticking with zombie fly makes it sound even creepier. What have they been doing to these bees? Well, its as simple as finding a bee, attaching itself to it, and injecting its eggs into the bee. The bees then take on symptoms that represent a zombie: flying around at night, circling around and around, and jerky movements. But it is basically destroying the neurological system of the bee. Then after a few hours, the bees are dead. Most produce larvae of the zombie fly, which then leaves the bee host body and creates more zombie flies to feast on bees.

Survival Bag

Why make a bug out bag as small as possible?

Earworm Now, after reading and studying more, I've changed my outlook: get the absolute biggest pack you can manage - because you will fill it and still have to leave things out that you'd rather not. Also, the Bugout Bag shouldn't be seen as the end-all be-all answer to escaping your situation. Your G.O.O.D. vehicle should be seen that way - and it should be preloaded with a few items (different article). The Bugout Bag should be seen as what you have to grab when your vehicle is disabled or out of gas and you have no choice but to leave it. THEN that Bugout bag better have everything in it you need to survive to reach your end destination.

Bug out bag: What should you bring?

MREs are popular for Bug Out Bag food, and they definitely have the high calories and long shelf life that you need. But they are also bulky and heavy. Freeze-dried backpacking food can be a lighter-weight choice over the MRE, but they may not work for everybody. The calorie content can be much lower than in freeze-dried meals. They also require extra water and a heating source, and either or both of those could be in short supply during a bug out. Dont be skimpy with your meal plan. Running around in the woods can require a lot of energy and you may find yourself blowing through 5,000 calories or more per day. The best foods for that level of exertion are quick-and-easy carbs (starches and sugars) and food high in proteins and fats that provides you with more long-term energy. So what do you really want to have with you? Drinks You need to stay hydrated while bugging out, and you need calories. Packets of apple cider mix, instant teas, and powdered lemonade can add some sugars and keep you drinking. Breakfast Granola bars, trail mix, dried fruit, breakfast bars, and protein shakes can provide you with ready-to-eat or just-add-water nutrition.

The consequences of this for the wider food market are not yet known, although van Otterdijk and the FAO are investigating the matter and will release findings later this year. For Greg Barrow, who heads the WFP's liaison office in London, the main concern is evident. "What happens is that if a lot of food is being wasted andwhat this does is it creates a situation where the food that is available is more expensive and less people are able to get it," he said."One could say that if the population grows at the rate it does and the world continues to waste as much food as it does, then ultimately somewhere down the line it could manifest itself in terms of a shortage." The problem is how the Western world combats food waste. Barrow argued that while the FAO can attempt to change the production process in the developing world, it can only highlight the food waste issue with industrialized nations. "It's not like they're (the FAO) going to suddenly appear on the high street in London and tell people what to do in terms of buying one bag of salad as bug out bag opposed to two," he said. War and waste pose food risks for future

The media and government officials though are leaving out other obvious and important nutrients like magnesium, iodine, bicarbonate, vitamin C and selenium. The main point that the journal Health Affairs makes is that adding just the nutrients they point to above (potassium, fiber, vitamin D and calcium) would add hundreds more dollars to family's annual grocery bill. The study found introducing more potassium into a diet is likely to add $380 per year to the average consumer's food costs, said professor Pablo Monsivais from the Department of Epidemiology and the School of Public Health at the University of Washington. Just as food prices are skyrocketing we see that at present consumption costs and patterns, Americans are malnourished and are up a creek without a paddle in terms of being able to afford better diets. Even without survival scenarios the situation is grim in terms of nutritional fitness and people's chances of standing up to the increasing toxic threats, which of course includes increasing levels of radiation due to Fukushima. And if all that is not bad enough Byron Richards is alerting us to the fact the government actually wants to make nutrition more expensive. "The FDA and Senator Durbin's latest attack against the dietary supplement industry should leave consumers looking for natural health options at affordable prices up in arms. This attack will target some of the most popular and effective dietary supplements, removing them from the free market and placing them under control of large pharmaceutical companies.

The Most Complete & Nutritional Emergency Food

You need salt, yeast, baking powder and baking soda for baked goods. Maintain at least 5 gallons of cooking oil. Herbs come dried for storage and add flavor to protein and carbohydrate-based meals. Keep a 90-day supply of vitamin and mineral supplements for the entire family. The Department of Defense and the Office of Civil Defense recommend storing 1 gallon of water per day per person. For two-weeks for a family of four, that requires 56 gallons of water. Preparing for a longer emergency, the storage requirements for water become daunting. In lieu of storing all the fresh water your family might need, The National Terror Alert Response Center suggests using a water purification system such as SteriPEN Water Purifiers. Keep stored water in clean containers away from sunlight and not near polyethylene plastics storing gasoline or kerosene. To purify local water without a SteriPEN-like system, add 5 to 7 drops of bleach per gallon of water.

Socalgas Offers Emergency Preparedness Tips

Emergency Kits Can Save Lives

17, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --Earthquakes, fires and other emergencies strike suddenly. Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) is reminding customers about the importance of being prepared for California's next major emergency. "Customer safety is a top priority for SoCalGas and we want to provide information to help our customers be ready for an emergency," said Jimmie Cho, SoCalGas vice president of gas operations. "After a natural disaster or major incident such as the 1994 Northridge earthquake or the recent wildfires, public safety services will likely be busy handling emergencies. We encourage customers to be prepared at all times." SoCalGas offers these safety tips: Before an emergency Know where your gas meter is located and keep a 12" or larger adjustable wrench with your emergency supplies, near your building exit or next to your gas meter shut-off valve. Do not store the wrench on the gas meter or other gas piping. Even in the case of an earthquake or other emergency, turn off your gas meter if you smell gas, hear gas leaking or see other signs of a leak and ONLY if it is safe to do so. To help prevent your water heater from moving or toppling in an earthquake, strap it firmly to the wall studs in two places the upper and lower one-third of the tank with heavy bolts and metal strapping. Be sure to place the lower strap at least four inches above the thermostat controls. Kits are often available at your local hardware store and we recommend having a licensed, qualified professional install it for you.

Ultimate Disaster Kit

15th, 2014 - 5:30pm Font size: The back of John Parry's truck is full of supplies that may save his life in case of an emergency. The weather gets pretty bad so I got chains, tow rope, coveralls, hats, gloves. County Disaster and Emergency Services Coordinator Paul Spengler says staying in the car is the best option if a driver is stranded, which is why having an emergency kit is vital. I've heard of cases where people leave their cars, which is the best protection affordable if they get stuck in a blizzard, and they think help is just down the road and that's the last time they're seen alive. Spengler says the kit should contain supplies like rope and water. I've got emergency flairs, flashlight, bottled water, energy bars, and emergency first aid kit. If you do get stuck, Spengler recommends running the engine 5 to 10 minutes an hour to save fuel, and roll down a window about an inch. That's just to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning while you run the engine. As for Parry, he hasn't had any major emergencies, but he has used those chains to help other drivers get out of sticky situations. I leave them in there just in case, go off the road or get stuck or somebody else does. For a list of recommended supplies for an emergency kit, click here Story byLuba Solonenko, Beartooth NBC. Disasters - natural or manmade - are not something we like to think about but they do occur. Mother Nature can bring her wrath in the deadly form of earthquakes, tornadoes and hurricanes. She also can shut down entire cities with snowstorms that while not as dangerous, still need to be prepared for. As we learned tragically on September 11, 2001, man himself can cause a disaster and those threats have not gone away. No matter the cause of a disaster, you need to be prepared to survive without outside help for at least three days. You cannot rely on first responders being able to assist you right away, particularly with a large scale event. Every family should have an emergency supply kit to help them through a disaster.

Hemostats: To the layman there may not seem to be a big difference between forceps and hemostats, and the reality is, there really isnt. They are very similar. You want at least one set if not two of quality hemostats in order to handle emergencies. These are used to clamp off blood vessels so the injured person or animal does not bleed out.

Vanport Flood. Photo: Portland Fire Bureau The Big One is coming. The Pacific Northwest is overdue for a cataclysmic earthquake, one that will measure at the upper end of the Richter scale. This is something that most experts can agree on. Of course, nobody knows when the Big One will actually occur, or just how destructive it will be. Portland residents may be lulled by talk of taking emergency precautions to prepare themselves for a large, destructive earthquake. If a little eye rolling were to occur, it could be forgiven. After all, just how long has there been talk of the Big One being overdue, exactly? While the violent eruption of Mount St. Helensand the layer of ash it left around the Portland metropolitan regionmay have faded from Portlanders collective memory, all you have to do is dig up videos of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan in 2011 , or the more recent Hurricane Sandy that flooded lower Manhattan . The thing about disasters is that they can strike at any time without any warning. If you think, It wont happen here, or It wont happen to me, well, join the club.

Alaska Purchasing Emergency Food Supplies

Emergency Management Blog - Eric Holdeman: Disaster Zone "Thanks for this post. I checked our state and county (Florida and Brevard) and discovered that the a" Alaska is in essence an island. Anyone who lives on an island recognizes their vulnerability to disasters. While there is a Canadian land border it is not one traversed by rail and roads. The huge majority of the goods that flow to Alaska, including food come by ship. And, 75% of that comes from the Port of Tacoma in Washington State. Recognizing the vulnerability the state has moved to procure emergency food stuffs for 40,000 people. As with any commodity there are the inevitable storage, distribution and life cycle costs of replacing food when the shelf life is exceeded. Evidently this is their second try at issuing a request for proposals (RFP). It will be interesting to watch how this develops over time and if they can be successful with this iteration of the RFP process.

Emergency Food Storage Supplies

How to Start an Emergency Food Supply at Home

Types of Long Term Food Storage Containers Food can be stored in many different ways. Depending on the moisture content of the food and the preferences of the person doing the canning, foods can be preserved with any of the following methods: Commercial canning store bought canned fruits, vegetables, and meats are inexpensive and readily available in stores. They can make up a significant portion of a one year food storage. Home canning this type of canning is done at home in Mason jars. It is more expensive than commercially canned foods, but is a good option for people who enjoy canning as a hobby or want to preserve foods from their home vegetable gardens. Dry pack canning #10 tin cans are filled with approved dry foods and an oxygen absorber packet, then canned with a dry pack canning machine. This method provides extremely long shelf lives. PETE plastic containers airtight polyethylene terephthalate bottles labeled PETE or PET can be washed and filled with dry food storage items, topped with a desiccate packet, and sealed Large plastic buckets if no other canning method is available, dry foods with less than 10% moisture content can be packed with dry ice in a food grade plastic bucket. Buy Usable Items for Food Storage at Home It's silly for a lactose intolerant person to stock up on powdered milk, and equally silly for someone who gags at the sight of boxed macaroni and cheese to buy cases and cases of it for storage just because it's cheap and stores well. All food storage should be usable and easy to rotate into daily meals. At the grocery store, start by noticing what goes into the shopping cart. Every time a shelf-stable item goes in, buy three or four extras (or more, if personal finances allow.) If this simple food storage tip is done consistently, it will add up to a significant supply in no time. Just make sure to rotate and use items regularly to prevent wasting anything. Check Out Long Shelf Life Foods Store bought canned goods typically last 1-2 years, so they are sufficient for a several month's supply of emergency survival food (provided that they are rotated and used efficiently.) Some families with long term food storage also use alternative canning methods to stretch their food supply even further. Dry pack canning is a popular method for long term food storage because of the long shelf life it provides. While all foods are not suitable for this type of canning, using it can result in foods that will be good for 5, 8 or even 20 years. Deciding to begin a long term food supply for emergency preparedness is a step in the right direction, but even the most well-intentioned people encounter obstacles in building their supply.

Syria: Emergency supplies reach vulnerable children

With the help of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, negotiations with various parties including the Governor of Idleb and local community leaders had opened the door for the convoy to cross the conflict line and enter Khan Shikhon. Local community members waved and smiled As we entered the town, people from the local community stood on the roadside waving and smiling. At the warehouse, where supplies were unloaded for distribution to the community by Sarc and the community themselves, community leaders thanked the mission team for their support. It was a great feeling to be able to bring humanitarian relief to some of the most vulnerable and hard-to-reach children and their families. Although on-going fighting has hampered the delivery of humanitarian supplies, this convoy was a positive step forward. Not only did it result in essential supplies getting through, but it also provided an opportunity to meet with community leaders and get a better picture of the humanitarian situation and urgent needs , including the need for education support. UNICEF followed up and was able to deliver school materials for 4,000 children to the Khan Shikhon district: Specifically, school bags containing stationery and recreational kits.

Disaster Preparedness: Creating A Plan

Data center disaster recovery planning

What data can be accessed off-site without compromising security or corporate compliance? If an organization has never shifted any business processes to a cloud-computing model, this may be a good time to consider doing so. While line-of-business applications may require more planning, or they may be to complex to easily move to the cloud, e-mail and storage are good candidates for a move to the cloud. Cloud-based Mail and Storage Cloud-based email services are available that not only can mirror existing e-mail systems, but can also comply with HIPAA and other e-mail regulations where required. Many of these email providers can also implement data governance over email communications for a business such as a law firm, which may need to mark certain communications as confidential or highly sensitive or may need to ensure that only certain staff members receive certain email communications. Cloud storage is a fast-growing trend with consumers, and businesses can also leverage the advantage of cloud storage as part of a disaster plan. An overwhelming number of organizations still have local backup solutions deployed, with data backed up to tape or RDX media. The backed-up data is often sent off-site and rotated regularly, so that a recent copy of an organization's data is readily available in case of system failures or a disaster. However, having that data replicated to a cloud storage provider can save time that would otherwise be spent retrieving that data from a physical, off-site location and then manually restoring it to servers. With a cloud solution, critical data can be accessed in almost real-timeif employees have Internet connectivity. There are also cloud-storage providers that can ensure that stored data adheres to corporate compliances such as Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX).

Annual Report Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Relief 2012

Here's why it is important to be prepared. By Jamie Friedlander Jan 01, 2014 When Hurricane Sandy hit New Jersey last year, 71,770 buildings were damaged. Of those, 5,051 underwent major damage and 501 were destroyed. Many of these buildings were businesses, and several of the businesses did not have proper insurance plans or emergency preparedness plans in place, putting both their employees and the future of their company at risk. The threat natural disasters pose is real, and it is not fading away anytime soon. Many natural disasters have occurred in the past few years alone: Sandy, the 2011 tsunami in Japan, wildfires and flooding in Colorado and Texas, among others. Getting the proper natural disaster preparedness plan in place for your company is the key to ensuring both your employees and your business survive. "Many employers are focused on financial success and establishing their company," said Linda Sherrard, Safety Consultant II at the North Carolina Department of Public Safety's Central Prison Healthcare Complex in Raleigh, N.C. "They are good people who overlook the 'what if' of emergency planning in the race to succeed in business. Oftentimes, employers delay having a plan in place, thinking it will never happen to them, and the system is overwhelmed when something does happen." Taking a few weeks out of the year to create a plan and train employees on that plan may seem like a burden, but it could mean the difference between a company's being destroyed after a natural disaster and bouncing back quickly. The Importance of Having a Plan in Place The climate of natural disaster preparedness has changed drastically over the last few decades. Companies used to sound an alarm, make sure their employees were safe, and try to get back on their feet as quickly as possible after a disaster.

If budget allows, an administrator may consider having a couple of spare, production-ready switches on a shelf to replace any critical devices that fail. Armed with the network inventory, network administrators should next capture the configuration data for every device. Whether this is the configuration for QoS and VLAN settings for Ethernet switches, or the configuration settings for the entire wireless network, having the latest configurations and profiles for the local networking gear in a secure alternate location is essential to a rapid recovery in the event of a disaster. An administrator should log any configuration changes in the disaster recovery plan . Network change and configuration management (NCCM) tools can automate this process, but administrators must back up the data in the NCCM system and make sure that they can access the information in the event of a disaster.

A Clockwork Insect: Garden Bug Sports Mechanical Gears

Posted in Unspecified

this site That's faster than a neuron can be fired off to the brain, meaning the planthopper's legs actually start jumping before its nervous system tells it to. Photo by Malcolm Burrows Closer examination of the insect revealed a small system of shark fin-like gears on the first segment of its hind legs (the equivalent of the top of a human thigh bone). As one leg prepares to leap, the interlocking gear system causes the other leg to move in almost perfect concert with the other. This synchronicity allows the planthopper to propel itself faster and farther and in a straighter path. Burrows and Sutton believe that young planthoppers evolved this trait in order to escape dangerous situations with as much speed and force as possible. At such speeds, synchronizing leg movements is absolutely vital, as one wrong move could send the insect springing to the side instead of forward. Planthoppers actually lose their gears by the time they have fully matured, replacing them with a friction-based system of feelers. In fact, even without these gears, adult planthoppers are better jumpers than their younger counterparts. Burrows and Sutton theorize that the loss of these gears is due to them being unnecessary, as the insect is now bigger and stronger, and also because it removes the danger of damaged gears throwing the legs completely out of sync (a phenomenon the two witnessed several times).

The ultimate bug-out bag revealed at SHOT show

2012 SHOT Show 2.jpg Everybody has their own version of the right stuff to carry and the wrong stuff to carry, and sometimes we just cant seem to agree. But what about the weird stuff? Those bizarre items that you might not think to carry. Most people dont spend much thought on the unusual things that could be (or should be) in your survival kits and BOBs. Heres my top five under the radar essentials: 5-hour Energy: If you are a caffeine addict like me, then this little bottle of nectar will go down smoother than spinach in Popeyes throat when coffee isnt an option. When the chips are down and you are running out of steam, knock back an energy drink and keep plugging away. It also helps to stave off caffeine withdrawal headaches. Cigarettes (even if you dont smoke): Think of all the smokers out there who would instantly become your best friend if you had spare smokes to hand out. They also make for good, lightweight tinder.

Verizon's Galaxy S 4 Mini Gets Some Galaxy Gear Love, OTA Rolling Out Soon

image The support docs just updated with details of the OTA, which highlights the Gear's potential usefulness. Gear support isn't all you'll find in this update, either. It also brings about some new bloatware (imagine that), like Verizon's MyInfoZone Widget, VMware, and Verizon Cloud. Exciting stuff. Aside from that, there are also a handful of bug fixes, including better LTE connectivity, improved Exchange email support, and a few others. The OTA should be rolling out soon, if not already.

Bug out bag: What should you bring?

2. Food For a three-day bugout bag, backpack meals and energy bars can be sufficient, Survival Cache writes. Backpack meals are freeze-dried meals that you add boiling water to eat. The site adds that a longer-term solution will be needed in a catastrophe that lasts for an extensive amount of time. 3. Clothing The clothes in your bag should be similar to what you would pack for a weekend backpacking trip, and should include a pair of sturdy boots or shoes. 4. Shelter A tent or tarp; a ground tarp; and some type of bedroll are the key elements, Survival Cache writes. 5.

Apocalypse Now: The Gear You Need to Survive Doomsday

Without further ado, the Opposable Thumbs Metal Gear Survival Guide: Metal Gear Series Event Timeline : After searching for a one-stop comprehensive timeline, we found David Christy's excellent chronological timeline of the series. Though it doesn't include all of the events from Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2, it covers the more recent games excellently, weaving every narrative event clearly and concisely with the relevant real-world events to create one of the most succinct summations of the series you can find. Gametrailers' Metal Gear Retrospective video series : If reading isn't your thing, Gametrailers has given Metal Gear its famous retrospective treatment, offering a briskly-paced visual and aural history of the most important parts of the series. Hideo Kojima's Developer Blog : The man behind the series, Hideo Kojima always stirs discussion. To some a genius and to others a loon, he is undoubtedly a man with big ideas. While his English blog isn't as revealing as his Japanese one, there's some great behind-the-scenes info here to give you an idea of where the game came from. Metal Gear Solid Essential Collection : Of course, no amount of reading or viewing can replace playing the actual games. The Metal Gear Solid Essential Collection includes Metal Gear Solid, and the director's-cut versions of Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3. As you might expect, there is no better way to learn the series than playing the games themselves. Metal Gear Solid 4 80GB PlayStation 3 bundle : Those who haven't yet picked up a PlayStation 3 to play through will likely want this particular bundle, which includes a Dual Shock 3 and a copy of the game. Trey Gaming Chair : With epic cut-scenes , thousands of pages worth of dialog, and enough voice acting to render the Blu-ray capacity minuscule , Metal Gear demands a comfy chair. Grab some chips and pop, unhook the phone, shut off the lights, and indulge yourself in comfortable, uninterrupted cinematic bliss. If you're anything http://lightningtracker.net like me, you've been waiting a long time to see how the saga " concludes ." Whether you go back and play the actual games, catch up with the series by reading the timeline, or get a general overview of what happened and what's to come, it's worthwhile to spend a little time getting yourself up to speed.

Keep bleach handy to kill bacteria, viruses and other potential pathogens that can contaminate a water supply. "One gallon of Clorox can disinfect 3,000 gallons of water," said Dennis McClung, proprietor of 2012supplies.com, a website offering survival information and supplies pegged to the widespread Mayan calendar myth that the world will end next year. Just add eight drops of bleach to a gallon of water and let it sit for 10 minutes, McClung told Life's Little Mysteries . To remove solids such as dirt that are suspended in the water, strain the fluid through a T-shirt or a coffee filter. Portable water filters, like those offered by the camping gear company Katadyn, are also good to have in a pinch, said Rawles, and go at the top of his list because they are useful in "umpteen" different TEOTWAWKI breakdowns. In a similar situation, what would you do? Would you have the right stuff to get out alive? If you followed the advice contained in hoary survival guidebooks, maybe not. Forget notions of jigging fish and building elaborate log structures. There's a new, more practical set of priorities, say experts, derived from what's being taught at the leading edge of military survival schools. "Our focus now is on rescue, not long-term survival training," says Caleb Randles, an instructor at the Air Force Survival School at Fairchild AFB in Washington state. What works for the military makes sense for the millions of hunters, hikers, snowmo-bilers and others who explore the outdoors every year. "Statistically, search and rescue personnel will find you within the first three days, dead or alive," says Cody Lundin, a survival trainer and the author of 98.6 Degrees: The Art of Keeping Your Ass Alive! In the following pages, PM dissects case studies, compiles lists of always-bring-it gear, and constructs an eight-step plan for making it through those first critical 72 hours.

Photo Credit Winter image by Walter Holzmann from Fotolia.com Cold weather survival is as much a mental challenge as a physical one. As extreme cold saps your will and makes it more difficult to think clearly and act decisively, careful planning and having the proper gear can be the difference between life and death. Ideally, you'll have a radio or a buddy along to help keep your mind occupied and clear. But those won't guarantee your survival. In addition to the gear you'd bring on any other trip, a few cold weather essentials should also be in your pack. Clothing Dressing in loose layers is essential to cold weather survival. When choosing clothes, synthetic fibers are preferable to cotton, which absorbs more moisture. Having multiple layers keeps pockets of warm air close to your body, providing natural insulation.

Outdoors Survival Strategies And Gear

Photo Credit pocket knife image by angelo.gi from Fotolia.com Preparing for an emergency before it occurs means keeping survival gear on hand. While survival kits range from bare-bones basic to advanced with all the trimmings, most survival kits will contain the same basic list of survival gear. Periodically check a survival kit after assembling it, as some items may need to be replaced over time. Water According to the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Red Cross, water is the single most important item to include in your survival gear. Plan on one gallon of water per person per day. Sealed bottled water is a safe and convenient way to add water to your survival gear.

Prepare Your Disaster Preparedness Kit

Posted in Unspecified

Two Easy Steps for Emergency Preparedness, FEMA Says

You may have to evacuate at a moments notice and take essentials with you. You will probably not have time to search for the supplies you need or shop for them. You may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having your own food, water and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least 72 hours. Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster but they cannot reach everyone immediately. You could get help in hours or it might take days. Additionally, basic services such as electricity, gas, water, sewage treatment and telephones may be cut off for days or even a week, or longer.

Building an Emergency Preparedness Kit

If you are one of the millions that have recently been effected by a natural disaster you will know how important it is to be ready. If you live in an area that has been spared any disasters you will may be thinking that those only happen to others. Think again. FEMA says we should be prepared to self-sustain for at least 72 hours in the event of an emergency. They recommend that every one has a basic emergency kit and a plan that details where you will go and what you will do in the case of an emergency. The Kits The basic emergency kit should include at a minimum: Water in plastic jugs, 1 gallon per person per day Non perishable food enough for a minimum of 3 days Can opener, flashlight, and battery operated radio with extra batteries for both A good first aid kit Matches in a waterproof container A whistle to let view website people know where you are should you become trapped Water purification tablets Personal sanitary and hygiene items including dust masks A complete change of clothes and a pair of sturdy shoes A sleeping bag or blanket A basic toolkit to turn off utilities which should include screwdrivers, hammer, pliers, wire cutters, an axe, a saw, and a crow bar. You should have your basic essentials kit packed in a backpack and stored near the entrance of your home where it is easy to lay hands on should you suddenly need it. Being ready for the 72 hour emergency is relatively easy since most of the supplies are common in every household. Whether or not you are ready for an emergency is a matter of whether you have realized that being prepared matters. Once you make up your mind to do it I think you will find that the feeling of being self reliant will give you a real sense of security should any natural or man-made disaster befall your region. In a real disaster the most valuable thing you can possess is the ability to take care of yourself and your family.

Biloxi, MS, June 23, 2009--Angela Blahut-Neville and her father Andy Blahut look at a hurricane evacuation map and discuss disaster preparedness. The family, including Angela "If a disaster strikes, where would we meet?" we asked each other. "Who would we call? What would we take with us?" A new national advertising campaign shared with CNN exclusively ahead of its official launch Wednesday aims to get families like my own at least talking about what we'd do in the face of a natural disaster or other emergency. "This is a pretty fearful topic for a lot of parents," said Priscilla Natkins, executive vice president and director of client services for the Ad Council, the private nonprofit group spearheading the campaign along with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. "This is not something they want to think about or necessarily talk about with their kids," she said. The Ad Council, which has produced many memorable PSA campaigns, ranging from Smokey Bear's warnings about forest fires to the "Friends Don't Let Friends Drive Drunk" series, conducted a national survey on emergency preparedness. The survey included 800 adults. Be prepared for any home emergency Preparedness in storm's path Six out of 10 American families said they did not have a family emergency plan, according to the survey. Only 19% felt they were "very prepared" for a disaster. Tennis stars help Sandy victims "What we have found (is) despite our best efforts and we have made some impact, we have some terrific messaging out there over the years, not enough people and not enough parents are actually doing what they should be doing in terms of being prepared," said Natkins. The high cost of weather disasters To try to change that, the public service announcements are not your typical PSAs. They are light-hearted, funny and unconventional, with scenes such as a family proudly talking about how unprepared they are.

Galaxy S4 Software Update Now Rolling Out For Verizon

Posted in Unspecified

Despite other carriers having issues with the software's rollout, T-Mobile users seemed to experience no issues with it. Many of them began rushing out the Android 4.3 update recently in order to make them compatible with the Galaxy Gear. The update rolled out for AT&T customers a bit earlier in the year and was pulled the following week due to bugs and problems users were reporting. The carrier reissued the update shortly after and seems to have corrected some of the issues. It also rolled out a minor update last week that finished working the bugs out of the system.

Image-insertion bug locks people out of Gmail

I cannot afford to be arbitrarily locked out of my account through no fault of my own due to a bug that Google has acknowledged but has left unresolved for months," an affected user wrote in mid-August in a http://lightningtracker.net discussion thread, echoing the frustration of many others. On the Gmail Known Issues page, Google explains that the bug is triggered under certain scenarios involving "inline images" -- images inserted into the body of email messages. For example, it hits Firefox users who insert images into messages while composing or replying to email. It also strikes users of any browser when they try to do this with large images. Another trigger is to work "over time" on a draft message that contains many images and attachments. There are no details as to how large an inserted file needs to be to trigger the bug, nor what amount of time is too long when drafting a message with images and attachments. When the bug is activated, Google locks people out of their account citing "unusual usage" and telling them it has detected "unusually high levels of activity." It can take up to 24 hours for Google to lift the lockout and restore affected users' access to their accounts. To reduce the risk of tripping over this issue, Google recommends that people use "a browser other than Firefox" when composing an email with images in its message body.
