The Rangers next will play the Boston Bruins, who rallied from a 4-1 third-period deficit to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 in overtime in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference series tonight. ?It was great to see us score a couple today,? Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh said in a televised interview. ?It?s not always pretty and we shoot ourselves in the foot every now and then, but we?re always willing to compete as hard as we can every time we step on the ice.? The win for the Rangers was the first in the series for the visiting team, ending a run of 10 postseason games between the teams in which the host won. Last year, the Rangers ousted the Capitals in seven games to advance to the Eastern Conference finals, where they lost to the New Jersey Devils. Arron Asham got the opening goal for New York at Verizon Center in Washington and Taylor Pyatt and Michael Del Zotto scored in the second period to make it 3-0. Ryan Callahan made it 4-0 after 13 seconds of the third period and Mats Zuccarello added a fifth goal six minutes later. Bruins Comeback At TD Garden in Boston, Patrice Bergeron tied it for Boston with 51 seconds remaining in the third period and got the winning goal six minutes, five seconds into overtime. After Matt Bartkowski put the Bruins ahead in the first period, the Maple Leafs built a 4-1 lead with 14:31 to play in the third as Cody Franson scored twice and Phil Kessel and Nazem Kadri added a goal each. Nathan Horton pulled a goal back for the Bruins midway through the third period and Milan Lucic made it 4-3 with 1:22 to play, 31 seconds before Bergeron made it 4-4. “He was really good, but the team was also good, too. I have to give the team some credit. They played hard in front of him,” Rangers coach John Tortorella said. Lundqvist, Ovechkin said, did an “unbelievable job; he makes incredible saves.” By winning a Game 7 on the road for the first time in its history, New York completed its comeback after trailing in the series 2-0 and 3-2 – the latest in Washington’s long history of playoff collapses. Now the sixth-seeded Rangers face the No. 4 Bruins, with Game 1 on Thursday at Boston. The Original Six rivals have not met in the playoffs since 1973. New York won that series in five games. “We’ll enjoy this one tonight,” Rangers forward Rick Nash said, “and then get back to work.” Nash was held without a goal by Washington, but New York found other scorers. Hartford hockey fans choose between Rangers, Bruins or neither

NHL playoff pix: New York Islanders, Pittsburgh Penguins, Rd 1 Gm 6, May 11, 2013

One thing that the Ranger players have that the Bruins do not is a tie to hockey in Hartford . The Ranger minor league affiliate has been in Hartford for 16 seasons and it will be here for at least three more. In that time a large portion of the current Ranger roster is or has played with the Whale/Wolf Pack. Players come in and out of Hartford like bus boys come and go in a restaurant. There should be a revolving door on the XL Center, but that is the nature of being an AHL city. . There are some that stay within the organization and the current Ranger roster has plenty of examples of players that have played in Hartford in the AHL. By staying in Hartford it gave them a shot to play for an original six NHL team. They would be playing in Madison Square Garden and in the largest market in the United States. You can see how that is a pretty big deal for a hockey player and most of the time the players are young and it may even be their first time being in a city that large. Here is a list of guys who have played in Hartford and whom also are currently on the Rangers roster. Washington Capitals routed by New York Rangers in Game 7 of 2013 NHL playoff series

In the past six postseasons, Washington is 2-5 in winner-take-all games, 1-4 when that game is played at home. In that same span, with the core of Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom and Mike Green , the Capitals have never advanced past the conference semifinals; this elimination marks the third time they?ve been booted from the first round. Asked if there was anything the team could take out of this short stay in the postseason, Backstrom was scathing. ?Lesson? Maybe learn how to play in the playoffs, I would say,? said Backstrom, who was critical of his own one-goal, three-point effort in the series. ?It?s the same thing as previous years, I would say. We came back regular season then playoff came and we?re not good enough. I can just talk for myself and my effort. Not good enough. No excuses. source: http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/washington-capitals-routed-by-new-york-rangers-in-game-7-of-2013-nhl-playoff-series/2013/05/13/be8925fe-bc2a-11e2-89c9-3be8095fe767_story.html

Derek Boogaard’s Family Files Wrongful Death Suit Against NHL

News Derek Boogaard’s Family Files Wrongful Death Suit Against NHL By SYDNEY LUPKIN | ABC News? Mon, May 13, 2013 View Photo ABC News – Derek Boogaard’s Family Files Wrongful Death Suit Against NHL (ABC News) The family of former New York Rangers hockey player Derek Boogaard , who died in 2011 of an accidental drug overdose, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the National Hockey League. The family claims that league doctors prescribed Boogaard thousands of painkiller pills for his injuries, and continued to prescribe the painkillers even after learning of Boogaard’s battle with addiction. The family also claims that Boogaard wasn’t informed of the higher risk of injury, and the potential for painkiller addiction, associated with his “enforcer” hockey position. “It appears there was a total system failure on all parts,” Paul Anderson, a Missouri lawyer who blogs on cases about athletes’ rights, told ABCNews.com. “That’s going to beat the heart of this case. Why did they continue to supply him with drugs?” Boogaard, who was 28 at the time, was found dead in his apartment on May 13, 2011, and the family had a two- year statute of limitations for filing a wrongful death case. The lawsuit, filed on May 10, 2013, attributes Boogaard’s death to a combination of brain damage and drug abuse brought on by his time in the NHL. The family did not specify damages to be awarded in the eight-count suit, but asked for “a sum in excess of the minimum jurisdictional limit.” RELATED: CTE, a Degenerative Brain Disease, Found in 34 Pro Football Players The 55-page filing alleges that Minnesota Wild team doctors prescribed Boogaard 150 oxycodone pills in the 16 days following nearly back-to-back nasal and shoulder surgeries in 2009, which, they claim, prompted his addiction. According to the lawsuit, the team’s physicians prescribed 1,021 pills to Boogaard during that season. Two years later, when Boogaard joined the New York Rangers, his team doctors prescribed 366 pills over the course of the season, according to the lawsuit. “The NHL owed a duty to Derek Boogaard to keep him reasonably safe during his NHL career and to refrain from causing an addiction to controlled substances,” the lawsuit states, alleging that the NHL “breached” this duty by failing to warn Boogaard of the possible dangers, and to monitor him.The NHL also lacked a system to prevent multiple doctors from writing duplicate prescriptions, the lawsuit alleges. RELATED: Judge to Decide Fate of NFL Concussion Lawsuits NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement that the NHL had not yet received the complaint. source: http://news.yahoo.com/derek-boogaards-family-files-wrongful-death-suit-against-232738598.html?.tsrc=sun?date=10410101

Wow. That is ? wow. Stanley Cup Playoffs 2013: Predicting Outcomes for NHL Conference Semifinals

Module

1 Pittsburgh Penguins Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sport The Senators dominated the shorthanded Montreal Canadiens in the first round of the NHL playoffs, but found out in Game 1 against the Penguins that things aren’t going to be that easy against a Stanley Cup-driven team. Heading into this series, the goaltending of Craig Anderson figured to be a strong point, but he allowed four goals in the loss and the Senators could not rally around the rebound mentality they showed in the first round against the Canadiens. The Penguins managed two power-play goals and another shorthanded one to dismantle the Senators in Game 1. Things won’t get any easier the rest of the way. Pittsburgh’s star-studded trio of Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby and Jarome Iginla are three of the top-four points leaders in the playoffs so far, and each has contributed at least six assists to help set up open teammates on the attack. Malkin leads the NHL in playoff assists with 10. Combine that effort with the surprising heroics of goaltender Tomas Vokoun, who took over for Marc Andre-Fleury after a Round 1 clunker, and Ottawa is truly going to have to turn this series into a physical, ugly one to have a chance to survive. In three games, Vokoun has allowed just four goals and leads the NHL in save percentage at .962. Pittsburgh seems to be putting it all together, and that could spell trouble for the upstart Senators. Ottawa will find a way to steal at least one game, but Pittsburgh looked like the better team in Game 1 and will remain so for the rest of the series. Prediction: Pittsburgh in five No. 6 New York Rangers vs. No. 4 Boston Bruins Both the Rangers and the Bruins completed thrilling, seven-game series in the first round, and that fatigue might show for both sides in the opening game of this series. In fact, the team that shows fewer effects from the first round might take the early advantage here. The New York-Boston clash will follow the tradition set between the two great U.S. cities over the years (as noted by TheHockeyNews.com ) and will feature two goaltenders with high hopes toward making this a defensive battle?New York’s Henrik Lundqvist and Boston’s Tuukka Rask. Expect Boston to rely on center David Krejci to carry the load on the attack. USA TODAY Sports He leads the NHL (tied with Malkin) in points during the postseason with 13, netting five goals (second in the league) and eight assists to help keep Boston’s otherwise modest attack in balance over the course of the game. However, there’s few teams more even in the playoffs than these two teams. The Rangers won the season series 2-1, but both wins went to shootouts and each team scored nine total goals in the three games (h/t USA Today ). While conventional wisdom would give the edge to the Rangers because of their head-to-head regular-season record and a less physical series against the Washington Capitals, the Bruins have shown resilience throughout the playoffs and have a clear advantage in the offensive department over a team that has struggled to score so far. Expect the Bruins to win the higher-scoring games, while the Rangers will contend more in a low-scoring affair. Prediction: Boston in seven No. 7 Detroit Red Wings vs. No. 1 Chicago Blackhawks Rob Grabowski-USA TODAY Sports Chicago and Detroit will be the only two teams in action on Wednesday night, as Game 1 of this series will get underway at the United Center in Chicago. These two talented squads are coming off very different wins. Chicago easily defeated Minnesota in five games, while Detroit had to take Anaheim to the brink before escaping with a 4-2 win in Game 7. Right now, this might be the most competitive series we’ll see in the second round. Henrik Zetterberg leads the Red Wings in points right now with eight, while Chicago has been on the defensive side through its first five games. source: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1640722-stanley-cup-playoffs-2013-predicting-outcomes-for-nhl-conference-semifinals

Pittsburgh Penguins Advance: Brooks Orpik Goal In Overtime Eliminates Islanders (VIDEO)

The Islanders got back into the playoffs this year after being out of the postseason since 2007. With a move to Brooklyn upcoming in the near future, the Islanders could be turning a corner back into hockey respectability. “We really came together,” said Tavares, an NHL MVP finalist. “I hope we can bring more next year. We found out what it takes to be successful. Great character in this room. I like where we are headed.” Jarome Iginla tied it in the first, and Pascal Dupuis made it 2-2 in the second for Pittsburgh, which got 35 saves from Vokoun. Despite being outplayed for much of the game ? as evident by the shot disparity of 28-13 through two periods ? the Penguins entered the third in a 2-2 tie. Pittsburgh overcame a pair of New York power plays in the second ? including one for too many men on the ice that had coach Dan Bylsma irate on the bench ? and got even again when Dupuis scored his fifth of the series with 9:01 remaining. Joe Vitale raced along the right wing boards and flung the puck in front to Dupuis, who redirected it past Nabokov. Pittsburgh nearly took its first lead of the night in the final minute of the second when Crosby eluded Frans Nielsen behind the New York net and found Chris Kunitz at the right post for a quick one-timer that Nabokov blocked. The Islanders showed no signs of nervousness or that the moment was too big for them, despite the lack of playoff experience throughout the roster. source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/11/penguins-islanders-ot-orpik-playoffs_n_3261298.html

The Penguins won 4-1. (AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar)The Associated Press PITTSBURGH ? It’s no surprise the Pittsburgh Penguins have the leading goal scorer in the playoffs. The surprise it that it’s not superstars Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin but veteran forward Pascal Dupuis. The unheralded Dupuis has found the net an NHL-high six times through seven postseason games, including a short-handed goal that capped a 4-1 win over Ottawa in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals Tuesday. Dupuis says his confidence level is at an all-time high after a productive regular season in which he scored 20 goals in just 48 games. Dupuis rarely works on Pittsburgh’s potent power play. Instead he scores most of his points at even strength, finding his way to open spaces or getting to the front of the net for rebounds. NHL playoffs: Penguins strike early for Game 1 win over Senators

Craig Anderson made 26 saves on 30 shots for the Senators. Game 2 is on Friday. Here are some observations from Game 1, though. PEN-ALTY KILL Pittsburgh’s kill can be feast or famine. In the postseason, it’s been the former. The Penguins killed all of Ottawa’s 5-on-4 opportunities, including near-consecutive third-period penalties stemming on Kris Letang (unsportsmanlike conduct) at 8:04 and minors to James Neal at 10:19 and 12:58. Ottawa mustered seven total shots in 8:22 at 5-on-4 and allowed a shorthanded goal to Dupuis, who has six total goals in the postseason, on Neal’s first penalty. Overall, Pittsburgh is 23-for-25 on the kill in the playoffs. MEN POSSESSED NHL playoffs: The Penguins defeated the Senators, 4-1, in Game 1. During that time, he became first coach to lead the U.S. Under-18 team to win three gold medals (2005, 2009, 2011). He faces a difficult task in Buffalo. Rolston is charged with improving a team that has fallen on hard times after missing the postseason in four of the past six years. Last week at the season-ending press conference, Regier used the words “patience” and “suffering” while discussing the long-term turnaround. “In life I think the big thing is struggling isn’t an option, I think it’s a requirement,” Rolston said. “From where we’re at, patience is a really hard thing for our society in general, especially with the fans in Buffalo, what kind of team they want to have. They expect something that we’re going to provide for them. “So the patience is in the process of how we have to go about that and how we have to keep moving on the path that we’re on.” Rolston takes over a young Sabres team that could get even younger. source: http://aol.sportingnews.com/nhl/story/2013-05-07/ron-rolston-buffalo-sabres-interim-coach-tag-removed-lindy-ruff-darcy-regier-rya

The changes come two days after Rolston took over the job on a permanent basis. He closed the season going 15-11-5 as the team’s interim coach in replacing Lindy Ruff, who was fired in February. The shuffle does not come as a surprise. Rolston indicated he was going to spend the next few weeks putting together his staff. Both Patrick and Adams were holdovers from Ruff’s tenure, and were both responsible for working behind the bench. Patrick had completed his seventh season in Buffalo, where he had become Ruff’s top assistant. He’s a former defenseman who enjoyed a 21-season NHL career split between four teams, including the Sabres. Adams is a former NHL forward, who spent 10 seasons playing in the NHL. From the Buffalo area, he had completed his fourth season with the Sabres organization, including the past two as an assistant coach. Longtime goalie coach Jim Corsi and assistant coach Teppo Numminen were expected to be retained by Rolston. Corsi completed his 15th season in Buffalo, a stretch during which he’s coached former starter Dominik Hasek and now Ryan Miller. Both Corsi and Numminen worked games from the press box level. source: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2013/hockey/nhl/wires/05/09/2040.ap.hkn.sabres.assistant.coaches.1st.ld.writethru.0431/index.html

Buffalo Sabres hire Rolston as head coach

? The Buffalo Sabres hired Ron Rolston as head coach after he served the interim position following the firing of Lindy Ruff in February. Rolston and general manager Darcy Regier will hold a news conference Tuesday at First Niagara Center to introduce Rolston, the team said. Rolston led the Sabres to a 15-11-5 record after Ruff was fired Feb. 20 following a 6-10-1 performance. Ruff spent 16 years as coach of the Sabres and 10 years as a player. Before being selected interim coach, Rolston had coached the Rochester Americans, Buffalo’s AHL affiliate, since 2011. The Sabres finished 21-21-6 and missed the playoffs for a second straight year and fourth time in six seasons. At the end-of-season news conference last week, Regier said more “suffering” might be in store for Sabres fans before the team can once again be considered a contender. He began a rebuilding plan at the end of last season, and Regier hasn’t said if those plans will include keeping goalie Ryan Miller and leading scorer Thomas Vanek or trading one or both before their contracts expire at the end of next season. Rolston was in his second season coaching Rochester when he was hired as interim head coach in Buffalo. He spent seven seasons as coach of USA Hockey’s national team development program. During that time, he became the first coach to lead the U.S. source: http://aol.sportingnews.com/nhl/story/2013-05-07/buffalo-sabres-hire-rolston-as-head-coach

NHL: Pittsburgh Penguins eliminate New York Islanders

— Brooks Orpik scored 7:49 into overtime, and the Pittsburgh Penguins overcame three one-goal deficits in Game 6 to eliminate the New York Islanders with a 4-3 victory Saturday night. Orpik, a defenseman, took a shot from the left point that might have clipped Islanders forward Brad Boyes on its way past goalie Evgeni Nabokov. The Penguins advanced to face the Ottawa Senators in the second round of the playoffs despite being outshot 38-21 in the decisive win. The Islanders were just 5:16 away from sending the series back to Pittsburgh for one more game when another defenseman, Paul Martin, got the Penguins even for the third time. Evgeni Malkin assisted on the tying and winning goals. On Martin’s goal, Malkin curled behind the New York net with the puck and sent a hard pass high in the zone to Martin, who ripped a drive through traffic in front. Michael Grabner had given the Islanders a 3-2 edge 2:21 into the third. He scored off a feed from Keith Aucoin to give the Islanders their third lead against the top-seeded Penguins. The goal left Pittsburgh netminder Tomas Vokoun sprawled on his stomach. source: http://www.mercurynews.com/other-sports/ci_23225339/nhl-pittsburgh-penguins-eliminate-new-york-islanders

The home team is 20-8-1 in the last 29 meetings between these squads. Let?s breakdown this matchup further and determine where the best value lies on the NHL odds boards before making our selection on this game. The Canadiens enter play tonight having lost five of their last six games, including a 3-2 defeat to New Jersey a couple of days ago. Montreal is trying to button home ice for the first round of the playoffs and look to be in good shape as they lead the Toronto Maple Leafs by 4 points, but still need to perform well in this game against the Jets. Montreal has struggled on the road as of late, winning just one on their last five games played on the highway. However, they are a perfect 4-0 in their last four meetings versus Winnipeg. The Canadiens are 5-1-1 over in their last seven games overall. Meanwhile, the Jets have a shot mathematically to make the playoffs and as long as there is hope, the team will press forward and attempt to win and sneak in, knowing that a poor performance will conclude its season. Winnipeg is an impressive 5-1 in their last six games played at home and 6-2 in their last eight overall. However, they are 0-4 in their last four contests versus a team with a winning record. Jets? prospect Scheifele continues wicked scoring pace in OHL playoffs

On Wednesday, Scheifele propelled the Barrie Colts to a 6-4 victory over the London Knights in Game 4 of the OHL final by scoring four times in the third period. He also had an assist in the first period. The feat comes on the heels of another five-point night he posted Monday in a Game 3 victory over the Knights. This is good news for fans of the Winnipeg Jets. A first-round, seventh overall, pick of the Jets in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, is way out in front of the scoring race in the OHL playoffs. He?s scored 15 goals and has 39 points in 19 games for Barrie this post-season. The Colts are now one win away from winning the OHL title and punching their ticket to the MasterCard Memorial Cup. The 20-year-old center has spent time with the Jets in each of the last two NHL seasons. In 11 career NHL games, Scheifele has one goal. source: http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2013/05/08/jets-prospect-scheifele-continues-wicked-scoring-pace-in-ohl-playoffs/

Canadiens 4, Jets 2

Both clubs have 61 points, however, the Bruins have a game in hand. Boston defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-0 on Thursday. The Jets, meanwhile, had their playoff hopes dashed even before the start of the final period. The Carolina Hurricanes couldn’t hold a lead and lost 4-3 in overtime to the New York Rangers , while the Ottawa Senators knocked off the Washington Capitals 2-1 in overtime, officially eliminating the Jets from the race for the final playoff spot. Deflated, Winnipeg (24-21-3) came out and quickly blew a 2-1 lead in the third period, surrendering three straight Montreal goals. The Jets finished with 51 points and have to settle for ninth in the conference. Rene Bourque and Brendan Gallagher also scored for Montreal. James Wright and Blake Wheeler scored for Winnipeg, who led 1-0 and 2-1 at the period breaks. Winnipeg made a late charge in April, winning six of their last eight games, including a streak of 5-0-1 at home, before losing 5-3 to the Capitals in Washington on Tuesday. There’s still plenty to be decided in the final three days of the NHL regular season. The Senators, Rangers and New York Islanders all have 54 points, but Ottawa has two games left while the New York clubs each have one game remaining. source: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/canadiens-4-jets-2-025059787–nhl.html

Winnipeg Jets players say goodbye after missing the NHL playoffs, again

but I’m not going to discuss those today,” he said Friday. Last season Winnipeg was strong at home but weak on the road and had to fight to get back to a .500 record. This year was different. The Jets were stronger on the road (a little weak at home at first) but also, as late as the last week in March, still looked like a pretty good bet for post-season life. Then a five-game slide put Winnipeg behind the 8-ball. Although the Jets went 6-2-1 to close out the season, the teams ahead of them were just as hot. Forward Blake Wheeler put it succinctly after Thursday night’s loss when he said you have to expect peaks and valleys in a season. “I just think some of our valleys were too deep,” he said. “You look at five games where we go and we don’t get any points in five straight games. That realistically probably did us in.” He said good teams find a way to at least get a point. Noel was slightly more upbeat than some of his players as he said he saw some real growth. “I think young players grew quite a bit. source: http://www.canada.com/sports/Winnipeg+Jets+players+goodbye+after+missing+playoffs+again/8303153/story.html

“We’re going to get a hell of a player.” The top-rated North American skater according to NHL Central Scouting is defenseman Seth Jones, a native of Arlington, Texas, who is the son of former NBA player Popeye Jones. Seth Jones played for Portland of the Western Hockey League and led all rookie defensemen in the WHL with 14 goals and 42 assists. Jones also was the youngest member of Team USA’s gold medal team at the world juniors. Center Nathan MacKinnon and winger Jonathan Drouin — who both played for Halifax of the Quebec junior league — are also in the running to be the top overall pick. Drouin led the Mooseheads with 41 goals and 105 points to earn league MVP honors; MacKinnon had 32 goals and 75 points for Halifax. “We’re really on course. We’re in good shape,” Tallon said. “The NHL combine is at the end of next month and we’ll have our organizational meetings there. I’ve been watching the top three and have a good feel for who they are.” The Panthers have been lucky in the draft lottery before, securing the top spot in both the 2002 and 2003 drafts. Jonathan Huberdeau, Florida Panthers Selected third overall by the Panthers in the 2011 NHL Draft, Huberdeau played in all 48 games for Florida and ranked second both on the team and among NHL rookies with 31 points (14-17?31). Among first-year players, he finished third in goals, fourth in assists and third in shots on goal (112). His 16:55 average time on ice also led rookie forwards, while his nine power-play points (2-7?9) placed fourth among all freshmen skaters. The 19-year-old Huberdeau set two franchise records, becoming the first Panther to score on two penalty shots in one season (Feb. 21 at Philadelphia and March 5 vs. Carolina) and recording the most points by a teenager in team history (four more than Radek Dvorak in 1995-96). Carolina Hurricanes fans will identify most with Huberdeau whose goal and two assists contributed to the team’s season-opening 5-1 loss to the Panthers back on Jan. 19. The rookie tallied six-points (3g, 3a) in four games played against the Hurricanes, the most against any team he faced throughout the season, and accounted for just under 20 percent of his overall point total generated during the season. Brendan Gallagher – Montreal Canadiens A fifth-round pick (147th overall) by the Canadiens in the 2010 NHL Draft, Gallagher helped Montreal go from a last-place finish in the Eastern Conference in 2011-12 to a Northeast Division title and the second seed in the conference in 2012-13. He played in 44 games, ranking second among rookies with 15 goals and fourth with 28 points. source: http://www.examiner.com/article/nhl-announces-calder-trophy-finalists

Boogaard family sues NHL for son’s death

The 28-year-old Boogaard was posthumously diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain ailment that can be caused by repeated blows to the head, according to the 55-page lawsuit filed in Cook County (Ill.) Circuit Court late Friday. One of the attorneys who filed the lawsuit, William Gibbs, said Monday the NHL profited from Boogaard’s physical abilities as team doctors dispensed “pain pills like candy” after he suffered repeated injuries. “The NHL drafted Derek Boogaard because it wanted his massive body to fight in order to enhance ratings, earnings and exposure,” Gibbs said. “Then, once he became addicted to these narcotics, the NHL promised his family that it would take care of him. It failed.” The NHL declined to comment on the lawsuit. The allegations of the suit mirror those by thousands of former football players against the NFL. Both contend the leagues knowingly withheld information on the connection between the violent collisions in their sport and traumatic brain injury, and pushed players to play through pain, an approach that brought about long-term health issues. Gibbs’ Illinois-based law firm of Corboy and Demetrio also represents the family of Chicago Bears safety Dave Duerson, who committed suicide, and other former football players against the NFL. Gibbs declined to draw a connection between the two cases or speculate on the prospects of a class-action lawsuit against the NHL, should one ever take shape. He said the NHL couldn’t claim ignorance about the consequences to Boogaard, who played for the Minnesota Wild and New York Rangers before he died. “The Boogaard family desperately wants meaningful change to happen so that this never happens to another kid,” Gibbs said. “What exactly that looks like and what exactly can be done is hopefully a discussion the league begins to have vis-a-vis enforcers, the distribution of pain management pills and it’s substance abuse program.” Michael McCann, director of the Sports and Entertainment Law Institute at the University of New Hampshire School of Law, said it would be difficult for the Boogaard case to turn into the kind of massive, class-action lawsuit the NFL is facing. source: http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/05/13/3395166/boogaard-family-sues-nhl-for-sons.html

With the top-two scorers in the league and no postseason, the Lightning are back to the drawing board. The hopes of a playoff berth were quickly extinguished after Tampa Bay went 3-6-1 following a 6-3-0 start. After finishing 28th in the league, the Lightning have some questions for this offseason. A Day In The Life with Lightning scout John Rosso

It is used to enjoy listening to music or grabbing a bite to eat when making a pit stop and catch up with his friends. Sirius XM Radio is his go-to guide, or as he calls it, his ?best friend? for getting through the long doldrums of driving through the wintery landscape in the upper Midwest. Rosso also has a favorite eatery to hit up, almost without fail, on each and every trip. He loves Panera Bread. Not only does he enjoy the food, but the coffee on hand comes in handy for staying up late seeing games and writing reports, not to mention the free Wi-Fi Internet that helps him keep up on current events for his own leisure, as well as assists him with anything work-related, such as sending in his daily prospect reports or double-checking the scheduled start time of a game he is going to see. When he finally arrives at the rink, usually 90 minutes before the opening puck drop, he is in full ?go mode.? That is, no time to enjoy a snack at the concession stand or make small talk with the other scouts in attendance. By now, most of his meals have already been consumed, on the road of course. The conversation with the other scouts is limited to merely small talk. ?They keep what they?re doing pretty tight to the vest,? Rosso said. ?We know more or less who we?re all there for.? It?s about an hour before game time, and Rosso has his lineups in hand, scouting over anything he might find interesting, such as who is injured, who is scratched and/or who is playing on what line. source: http://lightning.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=670453

Jiri Tlusty Will Look To Build On Career Year With Carolina Hurricanes

One of those players wasJiri Tlusty. Tlusty was not only one of the most consistent players for the Hurricanes in 2013 season, but he was also one of the biggest surprises. Despite the shortened schedule, Tlusty was able to go on and set new career highs in just about everything. Playing on the top line for the Canes, Tlusty actually led the team in goals. He found the back of the net 23 times, six more than his previous career high. His 38 points were third on the team overall, while he also finished with a plus-15 rating. He andAlex Semin(plus-14) were far and away the leaders in that category. It was a fantastic year for Tlusty, who was building on a solid third season with the Hurricanes. He became an important part of Carolina?s offensive attack last year, when he finished with a career high of 36 points, including 17 goals. He eclipsed the career marks set last year despite playing in 31 less games. Despite having been in the league since the 2007-2008 season, Tlusty is still only 25. He?s quickly becoming a core part of this team heading into the final year of his contract. source: http://www.rantsports.com/nhl/2013/05/11/jiri-tlusty-will-look-to-build-on-career-year-with-carolina-hurricanes/
