Boudreau sees big things ahead for Ducks

I’m looking forward to it,” Boudreau said. “I’m looking forward to training camp already. Especially with the rise of all our young players in the organization, from Rickard Rakell to Emerson Etem . Seeing them perform at different times, we’re really excited about seeing all those guys next year at camp.” After inheriting a team that would finish 13th in the Western Conference in 2011-12, Boudreau re-established a replenished Ducks roster as one of the best in the League. The bounce-back campaign was aided in large part by contributions from a number of new faces, including goaltender Viktor Fasth , forward Daniel Winnik and defenseman Sheldon Souray . But it was the play of Boudreau’s rookies, particularly California-born Etem, that has the coach most excited for next season. “I don’t want to put too much pressure on Emerson right now. Right now he’s just finding his way, but I think you could see that he has the capabilities of being something special,” Boudreau said. “It might be three or four years before he reaches that level. But his work ethic and everything else about him as a young man is really good. I don’t see why he doesn’t have that ability to become a real voice in California hockey.” The biggest news this offseason for the Ducks likely will be regarding the team’s pair of Finnish veterans. Detroit Red Wings Win Game 7, Eliminate Anaheim Ducks From 2013 NHL Playoffs

Gardiner, Schultz notable members of Anaheim Ducks disappointing 2008 NHL Draft class

Josh Brittain - Anaheim Ducks

While every draft is going to have the aforementioned group, the Ducks had very little to take away from a 2008 NHL Draft class that has produced many NHL players across all rounds. Six of the team?s 10 selections are no longer with the organization, and of the remaining four, none have played an NHL game or been AHL regulars at this point. Even with a few late round low-risk, high-reward choices still waiting to perhaps have that breakout moment, the Ducks, a normally strong drafting team, had a year to forget at the podium. Jake Gardiner, D, Minnetonka Skippers (MN HS) ? 1st Round, 17th overall Status: NHL Player (TOR) NHL Games Played: 87 Gardiner was one of the many solid defensive prospects that came out of the 2008 NHL Draft. That first round included many quality blueliners including high picks Drew Doughty , Alex Pietrangelo , and Zach Bogosian , as well as a plethora of mid-to-late first round picks like Erik Karlsson , Michael Del Zotto , and John Carlson . While Gardner has developed a little more slowly than some of his first round counterparts he is still a very talented player who is starting to hit his stride in Toronto. Shortly after his draft Gardiner went back to Minnetonka High School and completed his senior year, and from there he signed to play for the University of Wisconsin in the WCHA. While Gardner had respectable rookie and sophomore years with the Badgers, he broke out his junior year and tripled his sophomore production and finished the season with 41 points, a point-per-game pace. It was about that same time however that the Anaheim Ducks constructed a deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs which included Gardiner and Joffrey Lupul for veteran defenseman François Beauchemin. Gardner would immediately sign an entry-level deal with the Maple Leafs, and was assigned to the Toronto Marlies. source: http://www.hockeysfuture.com/articles/90587/gardiner-schultz-notable-members-of-anaheim-ducks-disappointing-2008-nhl-draft-class/

See the best action photos from the Eastern Conference first round . Selanne is still disappointed to miss out on his best chance for a long playoff run since the Ducks won the Stanley Cup in 2007. ”This team was ready to go further,” Selanne said. ”I knew with our depth, the longer we would go would be to our advantage. Not so many teams have that. … We have such a good team here right now. We know we’re better than this. I think everyone felt there is some unfinished business here. It would be easier if we didn’t feel that way. DETROIT 3, DUCKS 2: Anaheim ousted from NHL postseason; Teemu Selanne’s future in question

The Red Wings advanced to play the Chicago Blackhawks in the second round, depriving the Ducks of a shot at dethroning the defending Stanley Cup champion Kings. “I don’t know what it would have meant to hockey in general, but it would have been a hell of a series,” Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau about squandering a chance to meet the Kings for the first time in the playoffs. “It would have taken other sports off the front page, for sure.” The Kings will face the San Jose Sharks. Meanwhile, it was unclear if this was Teemu Selanne’s final NHL game. He declined to say if he would play another season after Sunday’s defeat. “It’s a big decision again,” Selanne said. “I’m going to take some time off and clear my head and think about what’s the next step here. I don’t really have to play, but this has been so much fun. I’ve just got to decide when is the time.” If this was Selanne’s last game, then perhaps the sellout crowd of 17,412 The Ducks’ Teemu Selanne (left) congratulates Detroit’s Henrik Zetterberg (right) following the Ducks’ 3-2 loss Sunday night at Honda Center in Anaheim. eliminating them from the Stanley Cup Playoffs. source: http://www.dailybulletin.com/ducks/ci_23230336/detroit-3-ducks-2-anaheim-ousted-from-nhl

Realistic Offensive Draft Options For the Philadelphia Flyers

Domi, who was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes a few years ago, may be a risk some teams do not want to take. Domi has said that his condition has forced him to be more focused and responsible on the ice and he makes sure to work with his trainers to keep his glucose levels up. If Domi is drafted by the Flyers it would not be the first time they selected a player with the disease. The Flyers took a chance on Bobby Clarke who also has diabetes and he brought the Cup home for them. I?m not saying that Domi is Clarke, but for a young kid struggling with this condition, he seems to still excel at hockey. Another name that has been thrown out there is Adam Erne of the QMJHL?s Quebec Remparts. Erne is No. 13 on the NHL?s Central Scouting report of the North American skaters, and he has a lot of offensive potential. In his past two years playing in Quebec he has been a pretty consistent player, which is something the Flyers like. He?s a bigger forward than the Flyers? typically draft, but a change in how they build up their team may actually be a good thing. source: http://www.rantsports.com/nhl/2013/05/14/realistic-offensive-draft-options-for-the-philadelphia-flyers/

Detroit Red Wings Win Game 7, Eliminate Anaheim Ducks From 2013 NHL Playoffs

Detroit created choking traffic in front of Hiller immediately, and a rebound of Filppula’s long shot went straight into the slot for Zetterberg. The Ducks appeared overmatched early, but Etem ? the 20-year-old Long Beach native ? had all the poise his teammates lacked. Etem attempted to dump the puck into the Detroit zone, but instead collected a deflection and skated in on net, firing a shot over a prone defenseman and past Howard for the third goal of his first NHL playoff series. Detroit went right back ahead when Abdelkader stole Beauchemin’s pass near the blue line during the power play. Abdelkader easily skated away from Sheldon Souray and beat Hiller on a breakaway for his first goal since returning from a two-game suspension. The Red Wings again took control in the second period, and Filppula put them up 3-1 when he jumped on a loose puck and fired a backhand through Beauchemin’s legs for his first goal of the postseason. NOTES: Anaheim D Toni Lydman missed his fourth straight game since getting hit in the head by Abdelkader, who served a two-game suspension and returned for Game 6. … The Red Wings scratched C Cory Emmerton for the first time in the series and activated RW Patrick Eaves, who sat out Game 6. D Carlo Colaiacovo stayed in the lineup for the second straight game. source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/13/detroit-red-wings-ducks-game-7-nhl-playoffs_n_3264415.html

Not so many teams have that. … We have such a good team here right now. We know we’re better than this. I think everyone felt there is some unfinished business here.

NHL: Pittsburgh Penguins eliminate New York Islanders

— Brooks Orpik scored 7:49 into overtime, and the Pittsburgh Penguins overcame three one-goal deficits in Game 6 to eliminate the New York Islanders with a 4-3 victory Saturday night. Orpik, a defenseman, took a shot from the left point that might have clipped Islanders forward Brad Boyes on its way past goalie Evgeni Nabokov. The Penguins advanced to face the Ottawa Senators in the second round of the playoffs despite being outshot 38-21 in the decisive win. The Islanders were just 5:16 away from sending the series back to Pittsburgh for one more game when another defenseman, Paul Martin, got the Penguins even for the third time. Evgeni Malkin assisted on the tying and winning goals. On Martin’s goal, Malkin curled behind the New York net with the puck and sent a hard pass high in the zone to Martin, who ripped a drive through traffic in front. Michael Grabner had given the Islanders a 3-2 edge 2:21 into the third. He scored off a feed from Keith Aucoin to give the Islanders their third lead against the top-seeded Penguins. The goal left Pittsburgh netminder Tomas Vokoun sprawled on his stomach. source: http://www.mercurynews.com/other-sports/ci_23225339/nhl-pittsburgh-penguins-eliminate-new-york-islanders

Flyers owner: Failed season ?was the perfect storm?

?And we ended up with the worst schedule in the league. At one point, we played 20 games, and Boston had played 15 [actually, 14]. You already have a compressed schedule, and ours was compressed more than anyone else?s. And when you have tweaking, no practices, and a bad start, we never recovered.? It didn?t help that the Philadelphia Flyers dealt with plenty of injuries along the way, especially when it came to their defense. Luke Schenn and Kimmo Timonen were the only blueliners to play in more than 37 games for the Flyers in 2013 ?It was sort of like everything that could go wrong did go wrong,? Snider added. ?It was the perfect storm.? That doesn?t mean that there weren?t a few positives for the Flyers this season. Forward Jakub Voracek enjoyed a breakout season and Snider liked what he saw from defenseman Erik Gustafsson . He also was happy with goaltender Steve Mason , who had a 1.90 GAA and .944 save percentage in seven games. Mason, 24, won the Calder Trophy in 2008?09, but struggled mightily after that until the Blue Jackets finally traded him. Ice hockey: Russian NHL star praises ‘Stalin’s logic’

“It was necessary to build the country and to do this, it had to be held in an iron fist,” said the Philadelphia stopper, who has spent most of his professional career in the United States . Stalin “knew what he was doing. People say ‘he was a bloody tyrant’. But back then, there was no other way. “Yes innocent people were among those who suffered from repression. But this happens,” Bryzgalov said. Pass or Fail: Penguins fan shaves support for team into his chest hair

And then there?s this Pittsburgh Penguins fan captured by Seth Rorabaugh of Empty Netters at Game 1 vs. the Ottawa Senators, who shaved ?LETS GO PENS? into his chest hair: @emptynettersWhat, no apostrophe? Wow. That is ? wow. We?re mostly impressed that all the letters face the right direction, which speaks to either his impressive mastery of mirror reflections or the creepy implication that he has an accomplice in his man-scaping. When we spotted this photo on Twitter, we had a sense of hair-story repeating. Was this guy the same guy who spotted this hirsute billboard during the Penguins vs. Washington Capitals series back in May 2009? Based on these strands of evidence, we think so: DC Sports Bog As Dan Steinberg of the DC Sports Bog wrote: This guy cancels everything else out. This guy rules. Stanley Cup Playoffs 2013: Predicting Outcomes for NHL Conference Semifinals

Module

1 Pittsburgh Penguins Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sport The Senators dominated the shorthanded Montreal Canadiens in the first round of the NHL playoffs, but found out in Game 1 against the Penguins that things aren’t going to be that easy against a Stanley Cup-driven team.  Heading into this series, the goaltending of Craig Anderson figured to be a strong point, but he allowed four goals in the loss and the Senators could not rally around the rebound mentality they showed in the first round against the Canadiens.  The Penguins managed two power-play goals and another shorthanded one to dismantle the Senators in Game 1.  Things won’t get any easier the rest of the way.  Pittsburgh’s star-studded trio of Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby and Jarome Iginla are three of the top-four points leaders in the playoffs so far, and each has contributed at least six assists to help set up open teammates on the attack. Malkin leads the NHL in playoff assists with 10.  Combine that effort with the surprising heroics of goaltender Tomas Vokoun, who took over for Marc Andre-Fleury after a Round 1 clunker, and Ottawa is truly going to have to turn this series into a physical, ugly one to have a chance to survive.  In three games, Vokoun has allowed just four goals and leads the NHL in save percentage at .962. Pittsburgh seems to be putting it all together, and that could spell trouble for the upstart Senators. Ottawa will find a way to steal at least one game, but Pittsburgh looked like the better team in Game 1 and will remain so for the rest of the series.  Prediction: Pittsburgh in five   No. 6 New York Rangers vs. No. 4 Boston Bruins Both the Rangers and the Bruins completed thrilling, seven-game series in the first round, and that fatigue might show for both sides in the opening game of this series.  In fact, the team that shows fewer effects from the first round might take the early advantage here.  The New York-Boston clash will follow the tradition set between the two great U.S. cities over the years (as noted by TheHockeyNews.com ) and will feature two goaltenders with high hopes toward making this a defensive battle?New York’s Henrik Lundqvist and Boston’s Tuukka Rask.  Expect Boston to rely on center David Krejci to carry the load on the attack.  USA TODAY Sports He leads the NHL (tied with Malkin) in points during the postseason with 13, netting five goals (second in the league) and eight assists to help keep Boston’s otherwise modest attack in balance over the course of the game.  However, there’s few teams more even in the playoffs than these two teams.  The Rangers won the season series 2-1, but both wins went to shootouts and each team scored nine total goals in the three games (h/t USA Today ).  While conventional wisdom would give the edge to the Rangers because of their head-to-head regular-season record and a less physical series against the Washington Capitals, the Bruins have shown resilience throughout the playoffs and have a clear advantage in the offensive department over a team that has struggled to score so far.  Expect the Bruins to win the higher-scoring games, while the Rangers will contend more in a low-scoring affair.  Prediction: Boston in seven No. 7 Detroit Red Wings vs. No. 1 Chicago Blackhawks Rob Grabowski-USA TODAY Sports Chicago and Detroit will be the only two teams in action on Wednesday night, as Game 1 of this series will get underway at the United Center in Chicago.  These two talented squads are coming off very different wins.  Chicago easily defeated Minnesota in five games, while Detroit had to take Anaheim to the brink before escaping with a 4-2 win in Game 7.  Right now, this might be the most competitive series we’ll see in the second round.  Henrik Zetterberg leads the Red Wings in points right now with eight, while Chicago has been on the defensive side through its first five games. source: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1640722-stanley-cup-playoffs-2013-predicting-outcomes-for-nhl-conference-semifinals

Pittsburgh Penguins Advance: Brooks Orpik Goal In Overtime Eliminates Islanders (VIDEO)

The Islanders got back into the playoffs this year after being out of the postseason since 2007. With a move to Brooklyn upcoming in the near future, the Islanders could be turning a corner back into hockey respectability. “We really came together,” said Tavares, an NHL MVP finalist. “I hope we can bring more next year. We found out what it takes to be successful. Great character in this room. I like where we are headed.” Jarome Iginla tied it in the first, and Pascal Dupuis made it 2-2 in the second for Pittsburgh, which got 35 saves from Vokoun. Despite being outplayed for much of the game ? as evident by the shot disparity of 28-13 through two periods ? the Penguins entered the third in a 2-2 tie. Pittsburgh overcame a pair of New York power plays in the second ? including one for too many men on the ice that had coach Dan Bylsma irate on the bench ? and got even again when Dupuis scored his fifth of the series with 9:01 remaining. Joe Vitale raced along the right wing boards and flung the puck in front to Dupuis, who redirected it past Nabokov. Pittsburgh nearly took its first lead of the night in the final minute of the second when Crosby eluded Frans Nielsen behind the New York net and found Chris Kunitz at the right post for a quick one-timer that Nabokov blocked. The Islanders showed no signs of nervousness or that the moment was too big for them, despite the lack of playoff experience throughout the roster. source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/11/penguins-islanders-ot-orpik-playoffs_n_3261298.html

Penguins F Pascal Dupuis stealing spotlight _ and goals _ from superstar teammates

The Penguins won 4-1. (AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar)The Associated Press PITTSBURGH ?  It’s no surprise the Pittsburgh Penguins have the leading goal scorer in the playoffs. The surprise it that it’s not superstars Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin but veteran forward Pascal Dupuis. The unheralded Dupuis has found the net an NHL-high six times through seven postseason games, including a short-handed goal that capped a 4-1 win over Ottawa in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals Tuesday. Dupuis says his confidence level is at an all-time high after a productive regular season in which he scored 20 goals in just 48 games. Dupuis rarely works on Pittsburgh’s potent power play. Instead he scores most of his points at even strength, finding his way to open spaces or getting to the front of the net for rebounds. NHL playoffs: Penguins strike early for Game 1 win over Senators

Craig Anderson made 26 saves on 30 shots for the Senators. Game 2 is on Friday. Here are some observations from Game 1, though. PEN-ALTY KILL Pittsburgh’s kill can be feast or famine. In the postseason, it’s been the former. The Penguins killed all of Ottawa’s 5-on-4 opportunities, including near-consecutive third-period penalties stemming on Kris Letang (unsportsmanlike conduct) at 8:04 and minors to James Neal at 10:19 and 12:58. Ottawa mustered seven total shots in 8:22 at 5-on-4 and allowed a shorthanded goal to Dupuis, who has six total goals in the postseason, on Neal’s first penalty. Overall, Pittsburgh is 23-for-25 on the kill in the playoffs. MEN POSSESSED NHL playoffs: The Penguins defeated the Senators, 4-1, in Game 1. (AP Photo) Ottawa, despite scoring the fourth-fewest goals in the league during the regular season, was an elite puck-possession team. Bouwmeester will make his postseason debut with the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday against the defending champion Kings; Horton won the 2011 Stanley Cup championship with the Bruins. Since 2001, the Panthers have had eight top-10 picks. Of those, all but Rostislav Olesz were in the league last season but just three remain with the organization. Florida had all five of its top selections from 2008-11 in the lineup at some point this season — including No. 3 picks Erik Gudbranson (2010) and Jonathan Huberdeau (2011). Whomever is taken on June 30 could be in the lineup come October although the Panthers made both Gudbranson and Huberdeau wait a year before coming up to the big club. “You see it coming but I want to win now and I don’t want to wait for years to pass,” defenseman Brian Campbell said of Florida’s youth. “Look at a guy like Huberdeau who solidified his spot here and is a top six forward in this league. Florida Panthers to host NHL Draft by 2016 with new scoreboard

A preview of what the new scoreboard in Florida will look like. (FlaPanthers Instagram)

With the new scoreboard the franchise will also get the NHL Entry Draft in a couple of years, CBSSports.com has confirmed. As part of their pitch to the county for the bond, the Panthers presented a list of events ( acquired by the Miami Herald ) that would come to the arena with a new scoreboard. At the top of the list was the draft in 2014, 2015 or 2016. A league source confirmed the NHL committed to bringing the draft to Florida in the near future if the new scoreboard is installed. Since the 2014 draft is already scheduled to take place in Philadelphia, it means Florida will host the draft in either 2015 or 2016. The Panthers held the draft at their arena in Sunrise in 1999. In addition to getting the draft, the source said there is also a chance the NHL All-Star Game will come to Florida, though the Panthers were given no guarantees. From the sounds of it, though, you can expect that Florida will be the host to the NHL’s best relatively soon –certainly after Columbus gets its game. BB&T Center is owned by Broward County but the Panthers pay for arena maintenance. The expense for a new scoreboard was a bit more than they could handle so they turned to the county for help with the promise of these events as a carrot. There were other events too, such as a Jehova’s Witnesses gathering that were said to come only with a new scoreboard. source: http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/blog/eye-on-hockey/22246967/florida-panthers-to-host-nhl-draft-by-2016-with-new-scoreboard

NHL?s Florida Panthers take on Broward County over $4.2 million scoreboard for BB&T Center

grichards@MiamiHerald.com The Florida Panthers will ask the Broward County Commission Tuesday for $4.2 million to buy a new scoreboard and master control for the county-owned BB&T Center in Sunrise. The team will have at least one detractor: County Auditor Evan Lukic said Monday the team should pay for the upgrade. Lukic also plans to present a report questioning the organization’s accounting practices. “They are responsible for replacing the scoreboard,” Lukic said. “We are not. They have other means in which to pay for it.” Panthers President Michael Yormark, said the landlord — Broward County — should pay for such a major upgrade. The Panthers, in the middle of a 30-year lease with the county, play under the same scoreboard the arena opened with in 1998. The new scoreboard would feature super-sized high definition screens sandwiched between two LCD ribbon rings. The arena, Yormark says, desperately needs the upgraded video and audio capability. “We have puts tens of millions of dollars into this building since it has opened,” Yormark said. “The county has not put one dollar into this building as a gift or as capital improvement. Not one. source: http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/05/13/3395621/nhls-florida-panthers-take-on.html

Panthers Will Ask Broward for $4.2 Million Scoreboard

But in comparison to the Miami Dolphins’ recent ask for funds to renovate Sun Life Stadium , the Panthers’ request is tiny. But though the county owns the 15-year-old arena, one county official says the Panthers should be on the hook for the scoreboard, The Miami Herald reported Monday . “They are responsible for replacing the scoreboard,” County Auditor Evan Lukic told the Herald. “We are not. They have other means in which to pay for it.” Not so, say the Panthers. “We have puts tens of millions of dollars into this building since it has opened,” Yormark said. “The county has not put one dollar into this building as a gift or as capital improvement. Not one. We’ve taken loans out, but we’re responsible for those. It’s their building. They own it.” The Panthers are in the middle of a 30-year lease with the county to play at the BB&T Center. “We’re going to get a hell of a player.” The top-rated North American skater according to NHL Central Scouting is defenseman Seth Jones, a native of Arlington, Texas, who is the son of former NBA player Popeye Jones. Seth Jones played for Portland of the Western Hockey League and led all rookie defensemen in the WHL with 14 goals and 42 assists. Jones also was the youngest member of Team USA’s gold medal team at the world juniors. Center Nathan MacKinnon and winger Jonathan Drouin — who both played for Halifax of the Quebec junior league — are also in the running to be the top overall pick. Drouin led the Mooseheads with 41 goals and 105 points to earn league MVP honors; MacKinnon had 32 goals and 75 points for Halifax. “We’re really on course. We’re in good shape,” Tallon said. “The NHL combine is at the end of next month and we’ll have our organizational meetings there. I’ve been watching the top three and have a good feel for who they are.” The Panthers have been lucky in the draft lottery before, securing the top spot in both the 2002 and 2003 drafts. Jonathan Huberdeau, Florida Panthers Selected third overall by the Panthers in the 2011 NHL Draft, Huberdeau played in all 48 games for Florida and ranked second both on the team and among NHL rookies with 31 points (14-17?31). Among first-year players, he finished third in goals, fourth in assists and third in shots on goal (112). His 16:55 average time on ice also led rookie forwards, while his nine power-play points (2-7?9) placed fourth among all freshmen skaters. The 19-year-old Huberdeau set two franchise records, becoming the first Panther to score on two penalty shots in one season (Feb. 21 at Philadelphia and March 5 vs. Carolina) and recording the most points by a teenager in team history (four more than Radek Dvorak in 1995-96). Carolina Hurricanes fans will identify most with Huberdeau whose goal and two assists contributed to the team’s season-opening 5-1 loss to the Panthers back on Jan. 19. The rookie tallied six-points (3g, 3a) in four games played against the Hurricanes, the most against any team he faced throughout the season, and accounted for just under 20 percent of his overall point total generated during the season. Brendan Gallagher – Montreal Canadiens A fifth-round pick (147th overall) by the Canadiens in the 2010 NHL Draft, Gallagher helped Montreal go from a last-place finish in the Eastern Conference in 2011-12 to a Northeast Division title and the second seed in the conference in 2012-13. He played in 44 games, ranking second among rookies with 15 goals and fourth with 28 points. source: http://www.examiner.com/article/nhl-announces-calder-trophy-finalists

Boogaard family sues NHL for son’s death

The 28-year-old Boogaard was posthumously diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain ailment that can be caused by repeated blows to the head, according to the 55-page lawsuit filed in Cook County (Ill.) Circuit Court late Friday. One of the attorneys who filed the lawsuit, William Gibbs, said Monday the NHL profited from Boogaard’s physical abilities as team doctors dispensed “pain pills like candy” after he suffered repeated injuries. “The NHL drafted Derek Boogaard because it wanted his massive body to fight in order to enhance ratings, earnings and exposure,” Gibbs said. “Then, once he became addicted to these narcotics, the NHL promised his family that it would take care of him. It failed.” The NHL declined to comment on the lawsuit. The allegations of the suit mirror those by thousands of former football players against the NFL. Both contend the leagues knowingly withheld information on the connection between the violent collisions in their sport and traumatic brain injury, and pushed players to play through pain, an approach that brought about long-term health issues. Gibbs’ Illinois-based law firm of Corboy and Demetrio also represents the family of Chicago Bears safety Dave Duerson, who committed suicide, and other former football players against the NFL. Gibbs declined to draw a connection between the two cases or speculate on the prospects of a class-action lawsuit against the NHL, should one ever take shape. He said the NHL couldn’t claim ignorance about the consequences to Boogaard, who played for the Minnesota Wild and New York Rangers before he died. “The Boogaard family desperately wants meaningful change to happen so that this never happens to another kid,” Gibbs said. “What exactly that looks like and what exactly can be done is hopefully a discussion the league begins to have vis-a-vis enforcers, the distribution of pain management pills and it’s substance abuse program.” Michael McCann, director of the Sports and Entertainment Law Institute at the University of New Hampshire School of Law, said it would be difficult for the Boogaard case to turn into the kind of massive, class-action lawsuit the NFL is facing. source: http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/05/13/3395166/boogaard-family-sues-nhl-for-sons.html
