8/4/2006 - Glam weekend Paris

You might come to see the Eiffel tower or to take a look at one of the countless museums, but let's just face the truth: Paris is above all a glamourous city, where you can put on your Manolos, take your orange Birkin with you (or any other colour) and your darkest and biggest sunglasses. Book yourself for at least 2 or 3 nights to explore the city's shopping district, night life and the best restaurants. And save the museums and cultural experiences for the next time, because this is all about glamourous shopping. Where To Stay? If you like contemporary, I should recommend the Park Hyatt Vendome to you. It has huge rooms with limestone bathrooms and Bang&Olufsen tv's. The hotel interior was designed by Ed Tuttle, famous of several Aman resorts on the globe. The location could not be better, close to the place Vendome and the Place Concorde, in the first district, near all the hottest shops. The only downside? There is no pool, while many 5 star competitors have huge pools. But why would you want to swim when in Paris? If you like old style, give Le Bristol a try. The location on the chic Rue St. Honore is perfect for shopping. Service is the keyword here, but make sure you book a suite because the normal rooms are nothing special for this price. They have a great pool, Anne Semonin Spa and a two Michelin starred restaurant. Another favourite among fashion people is located on the same street: Hotel Costes. This hotel stays a buzzing place. Don't expect any smiles or attention service here. But it's all about the scene, you can spot many celebrities when you stay here. The pool is one of the darkest of Paris, but lovely. I'd rather have dinner in the restaurant because the rooms are not worth the money. Where Not To Stay? Perhaps it's also important to know where you shouldn't stay. First of all, forget the Ritz. Although the location on the Place Vendome is unbeatable, the hotel is not what it used to be. If you want opulence you better give the nearby Hotel du Crillon a try, where Madonna is a regular, or the Four Seasons George V, often cited as Paris' best hotel. With of course, rates to match. The Plaza Athenee could better be avoided as well. I know Carrie Bradshaw stayed here, so what? The hotels public spaces are lovely, but rooms could use an upgrade. Unless you're a Saudi prince with chauffeur driven stretched Maybach, you will not be satisfied here. Where To Shop?
