Are Your Ugg Boots Really Ugg

01:28, 29/12/2009 .. 0 comments .. Link

First of all, what are ugg boots? They are a style of boot that is made from sheepskin with a wool lining. They are popular with women and men, but mainly with teenagers.
The original for cheap footwear was made in Australia. The people wore them around the home because they were so comfortable and easy to slip on. When World Wars I and II pilots began wearing them, they became tremendously popular among pilots. They wore them as a way of keeping warm because the planes they flew were not pressurized, which resulted in really cold temperatures.
These pilots dubbed the boots “fug” which was taken to mean flying ugg. No matter what they called them, air jordan shoes, the result was that they were cozy in these boots. Sheepskin is a perfect way to keep your feet warm without causing them to sweat. They work similar to a thermostat by providing more warmth when needed and less when it is not. That is one reason they are recommended to be worn without socks. For this reason, water sports enthusiasts, including surfing and competition swimmers, basketball shoes, also wear them.
Ugg boots became more popular in the 1960’s when Australian surfers started making their own boots for warmth when they were not in the water. They added a soft sole and resembled an insulted sock. That is where the name  is thought to have come from. The appearance of the boots was ugly.
In Australia Ugg is not considered a brand name. It is merely a term meaning sheepskin boot. This has been the subject of controversy for a long time. What basically started out as a house shoe in Australia has taken on an entirely new look as consumers search for boots that have the Ugg name.
A simple farmer’s market venture has escalated into a worldwide market for buy cheap. The McDougall’s, who live in Australia, ventured into a family business called ‘uggs-n-Rugs’ over 26 years ago. Taking them to the local farmer’s market and then graduating to the internet, where sales were good, the Uggs were about to change.
All of a sudden in America, celebrities started wearing a version of the boots, which were made by Deckers. Such names as Brad Pitt, Oprah Winfrey, and Madonna were seen wearing them, ugg boots, which increased popularity and the search for this type of boot.
As will happen when celebrities wear something, a new fashion trend was about to explode as teenage girls and boys alike started searching the internet for
. So essentially what used to be nothing more than a hyped up sock, has taken off as a best-selling boot. They are now made with embroidery, lace and in many different pastel versions of the original boot.
The great thing about the look that these boots provide is they can be worn with jeans or they look great with a skirt. That is why the popularity is not just limited to teenagers. Other age groups have decided they like this boot as well. The Ugg boots have really come a long way from the slipper that started the whole craze.

Suspect's father to meet security officials: report

01:25, 28/12/2009 .. 0 comments .. Link

A retired Nigerian banker said he is meeting with security officials because he fears his son may have been the man who allegedly tried to bomb a Detroit-bound flight, the Associated Press said Saturday.

Former bank official Alhaji Umaru Mutallab was quoted as saying that his son, identified by U.S. officials as Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab, was a student in London. He said his son left London to travel, though he did not know where to.

An official said that the U.S. has known for two years that the suspect could have terrorist ties, according to an Associated Press bulletin on Friday afternoon that provided no other immediate details.

Mutallab said, "I believe he might have been to Yemen, but we are investigating to determine that."

The development comes as officials in several countries are investigating how a Nigerian man, who claimed he was acting on behalf of al-Qaida, became a threat to blow up a Delta Airlines flight as it landed at Detroit Metropolitan Airport on Friday.

According to reports reaching here, British authorities were searching Saturday a London apartment where the 23-year-old Nigerian student once lived.

The investigation continued as authorities in both the United States and the United Kingdom stepped up airport security.

The U.S. government called it an "attempted terrorist attack" and said President Barack Obama would get new briefings Saturday on the investigation in Hawaii, where he is on vacation.

Russian president hails national soccer squad's morale

11:45, 26/12/2009 .. 0 comments .. Link

Despite failure to qualify for the 2010 World Cup, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said here Thursday that the morale of the country's national soccer team should continue to be boosted.

Down 0-1 by Slovenia in a second-leg playoff in the European zone on Nov. 19, Russia lost its opportunities to qualify for the South Africa World Cup.

"Whatever some may say after the deplorable setback suffered lately, with the advent of Guus Hiddink as the new chief coach the team started playing differently," the president commented on the loss in a live TV interview.

There were some exciting, inspiring victories in the recent years, said Medvedev, such as the defeat of England in Moscow and a triumph over the Dutch team during the Eurocup.

"In the world of soccer we have grown to the status of Europe's semi-greats," said the president as quoted by the Itar-Tass news agency.

"As far as club-level soccer is concerned, it looks not very bad at all," he added.

Western countries warn of more sanctions against Iran

12:19, 25/12/2009 .. 0 comments .. Link

The United States, France and Britain warned Iran on Thursday that more sanctions are inevitable if Tehran continues to defy United Nations demands."Should Iran continue to fail to meet its obligations, the international community will have to consider further actions," said U.S. Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice, who later told reporters that she meant tougher sanctions. The five permanent members of the UN Security Council -- Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States -- have agreed to wait until the end of the year before deciding on more sanctions.Despite pressure from the international community, Iran continues its nuclear program. Tehran maintains that it has the right to generate nuclear energy for civilian purposes. But Western powers suspect Iran of attempting to build nuclear weapons. The UN Security Council met on Thursday to assess Iran's compliance with previous sanctions and heard a report from the sanctions committee on two shipments of Iranian arms bound for Syria that violated the UN arms embargo on Iran.British Ambassador to the UN Mark Lyall Grant called the Iran sanction committee report "disappointing," because it set out "a pattern of violations" committed by Tehran."If you add this together with the continued uranium enrichment activities of Iran in violation of Security Council resolutions, of Iran's failure to answer questions to the (International Atomic Energy Agency) about its weaponization activities, the revelation of a secret enrichment site at Qom, and Iran's rejection of the offer over the Tehran nuclear research reactor," he told reporters, "then I think you can see that there is clearly this pattern of violations of international obligations and unwillingness of Iran to negotiate seriously with the international community over the nuclear issue."Last month, the UN's atomic watchdog, the IAEA, censured Iran for hiding an enrichment plant in Qom. Just days later, Iran announced it would increase its enrichment program by building 10 new plants.French Ambassador to the UN Gerrard Araud stressed the urgency of implementing new and tougher sanctions. There is no longer any reason to wait," he told the Council. "Iran places itself in a dangerous stalemate. The time has come to increase this pressure."China and Russia urged for greater patience in continuing negotiations with Tehran. We need to be patient, calm, not emotional," Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin told the Security Council.                                                                                    China wholesale

Al-Qaida in Iraq claims responsibility for massive Baghdad bombings

12:15, 25/12/2009 .. 0 comments .. Link

The al-Qaida in Iraq network claimed Thursday its responsibility for Tuesday's massive bombings that Related killed and wounded hundreds of Iraqis, the group said in a statement posted on the internet. The self-styled Islamic State in Iraq (ISI) said in its statement that its attacks targeted "bastions of evil and dens of apostates," confirming that the group is determined to uproot the Iraqi government and that the "list of its targets has no end."The authenticity of the claim could not be immediately verified. On Tuesday, five coordinated deadly attacks struck the Iraqi capital, killing up to 127 people and wounding more than 448 others. The latest wave of bombings is the third of such attacks after the massive attacks on Aug. 19 and Oct. 25.The same group also claimed the responsibility for both August and October attacks.Despite the dramatic drop in violence in more than two years in Iraq, insurgents are still capable to carry out high-profile attacks that may raise concerns about the ability of Iraqi security forces to contain violence ahead of the country's national elections early next year.                                                                      China wholesale

A/H1N1 pandemic death toll rises to 11,516, says WHO

12:56, 24/12/2009 .. 0 comments .. Link

At least 11,516 people worldwide have been killed by the A/H1N1 influenza since the disease first emerged in April, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday.

Of all the deaths, some 6,670 occurred in the Americas and at least 2,045 occurred in Europe. The other four WHO regions -- Western Pacific, South-East Asia, East Mediterranean and Africa --reported 1,039, 990, 663 and 109 deaths respectively.

The reported number of fatal cases is an under representation of the actual numbers as many deaths are never tested or recognized as influenza related, the WHO noted in its latest update of the situation.

The H1N1 flu virus was first identified in North America in April, and the WHO declared the new influenza as a pandemic in June. So far the virus has caused infections in more than 208 countries and overseas territories or communities.

In the temperate zone of the northern hemisphere, transmission of pandemic influenza virus remains active and geographically widespread, the WHO said.

While overall disease activity has recently peaked in much of the hemisphere, there continues to be increases in influenza activity in later affected areas of central and eastern Europe, and in parts of west, central, and south Asia, it added.

Iran rejects nuclear swap deadline set by U.S.

12:54, 24/12/2009 .. 0 comments .. Link

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast on Wednesday rejected a nuclear swap deadline set by the United States, the state-run IRNA news agency reported.

On Tuesday, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said that December is "a very real deadline" for Iran to "pursue its responsibilities" on the nuclear issue.

Responding to Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's defiance over the year-end deadline, Gibbs said while Ahmadinejad "may not recognize ... the deadline that looms, but that is a very real deadline for the international community."

Mehmanparast said that Iran rejects the December deadline for Iran to accept a deal for swapping enriched uranium with nuclear fuel, adding that the new deadline is not something new.

Tehran is still waiting for response from six major countries to its nuclear fuel swap proposal, Mehmanparast said.

Iran has proposed to swap nuclear fuel at the Iranian Kish Island to secure fuel supply for a Tehran medical research reactor and the six major countries might have a new proposal to offer, he said.

"Iran welcomes any proposal to meet the demand for fuel to the Tehran reactor," he was quoted as saying.

"Iran has adopted a crystal clear stand on its peaceful nuclear activities and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is responsible to provide Iran with nuclear fuel based on its Charter and the Non-Proliferation Treaty," Mehmanparast said.

"If they refuse to meet our legal demand, it will be quite natural for Iran to produce 20 percent nuclear fuel for the reactor," he said.

Under a draft deal brokered by the UN nuclear watchdog, most of Iran's existing low-grade enriched uranium would be shipped to Russia and France by the end of the year, where it would be processed into fuel rods with the purity of 20 percent.

The higher-level enriched uranium would be transported back to Iran to be used in the research reactor in Tehran for the manufacture of medical radioisotopes.

Iran has rejected the deal, demanding a simultaneous exchange between low and higher level enriched uranium inside the country.

The United States and its Western allies have been accusing Iran of secretly developing nuclear weapons under the disguise of civilian nuclear power. Iran has denied the accusation and stressed its nuclear program is only for peaceful purposes.

The United States has threatened another round of UN sanctions against Iran if it does not abide by the year-end deadline.

Obama taps Bush-era official as cybersecurity czar

10:13, 23/12/2009 .. 0 comments .. Link

U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday tapped a former Bush administration official as his cybersecurity czar.

Howard Schmidt, an adviser at former President George W. Bush's White House, was the final choice for the post, which has been vacant for months, the White House said on its website.

In the new role, he will "have regular access to the president and serve as a key member of his national security staff. He will also work closely with his economic team to ensure that our cybersecurity efforts keep the nation secure and prosperous," according to a letter posted on the website.

Schmidt will also oversee a White House cybersecurity office and coordinate efforts to enhance cybersecurity across government agencies.

The appointment came as Obama attached great importance to cybersecurity.

Since the president announced that protecting the nation's digital network would be a "national security priority" in May, the Pentagon launched a major new cyber command and the Department of Homeland Security has been improving protection of civilian networks.

Arms control talks between U.S., Russia to resume mid-January

10:10, 23/12/2009 .. 0 comments .. Link

Talks between the United States and Russia on a successor treaty to the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) will resume in mid-January next year, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said Tuesday.

Crowley said the U.S. delegation, led by Assistant Secretary Rose Gottemoeller, has returned from Geneva for a recess.

"Our goal remains to conclude a solid treaty for the president's signature as soon as possible, and we expect that the teams will resume their negotiations in Geneva in mid-January," Crowley said in a regular state department briefing.

The U.S. and Russian teams have been in intense talks in the past few months to clinch an agreement over the successor treaty to the START, which expired on Dec. 5. The eighth round of talks was held in Geneva on Nov. 9 - Dec. 19.

U.S. President Barack Obama said the sides are "quite close to an agreement" on further nuclear arms reduction after his latest meeting with his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev on the sidelines of the UN climate talks in Copenhagen last week.

The Russian president said some technical details require "further work."

Crowley said the talks involve "complex issues" in terms of "numbers, verification and kinds of systems," but he expressed confidence that the two sides will arrive at a satisfactory conclusion and agree on a new treaty that meets the national interests of both the United States and Russia.

Steven Pifer, an expert in arms control in think tank Brookings Institution, said in an interview with Xinhua that he thinks the remaining issue between the two sides are probably verification details.

He said the Russians probably want to reduce the amount of telemetry they share, which is the data that a missile broadcast during test shots.

"With telemetry access, we'll have a good understanding of Russian missile performance, they'll have a good understanding of American missile performance, that kind of transparency is very reassuring," Pifer said.

The START, signed in 1991 between the United States and the Soviet Union, obliged both sides to reduce the number of their nuclear warheads to 6,000 and delivery vehicles to 1,600.

The new treaty's outline agreed by Obama and Medvedev at a July summit in Moscow included slashing nuclear arsenals to 1,500 to 1,675 operational warheads and delivery vehicles to 500 to 1,000.

S Korean unification minister calls for positive turn in DPRK's nuclear issues

12:55, 22/12/2009 .. 0 comments .. Link

South Korea's Unification Minister Hyun In-taek on Tuesday said there needs to be a turning point next year in nuclear issues of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), local media reported.

The remark comes at a time when South Korean officials are reportedly hinting at a possible resumption of six-party talks on the denuclearization of the DPRK early next year.

The minister also said he sees renewed hopes in its relations with the DPRK despite stalled nuclear negotiations and soured inter-Korean ties.

"Following the U.S. envoy Stephen Bosworth's visit to the DPRK, there have been renewed hopes for dialogue," Hyun said in a speech at a forum held in Seoul's Myongji University.

"Inter-Korean relations have not been put back on the right track, but there have been (positive) changes," he said, citing medical aid Seoul sent earlier this month to Pyongyang to help treat A/H1N1 flu patients there.

The country should deepen its understanding on the DPRK besides its nuclear issues, Hyun added.

Six-party talks expected to resume early next year: Yonhap

12:49, 22/12/2009 .. 0 comments .. Link

The stalled six-party talks over the denuclearization of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) is expected to resume early next year, local media Yonhap News Agency said on Tuesday, citing unnamed government sources.

"The six-party talks must resume before next February in order to keep the on-going momentum," an unnamed South Korean government source told Yonhap, adding that the related countries are making joint efforts on it.

"Our (the South Korean government) commitment is to resume the negotiations as soon as possible," another source was quoted as saying.

According to the country's diplomat sources, if talks do resume, it will likely take place late-January or early-February.

The sources also mentioned the possibility of one more meeting between the United States and the DPRK before proceeding to the six-party talks because the fundamental difference between the two countries is too substantial at this point, Yonhap said.

Stephen Bosworth, U.S. special nuclear envoy, told a press conference shortly after his trip to the DPRK earlier this month that the United States and the DPRK have reached a common understanding on the need for resuming the talks and implementing the Joint Statement of September 2005.

During his stay in Pyongyang, Bosworth reportedly expressed his country's hope for restarting the six-party talks in the first two months of next year, while the DPRK side hoped that Washington would provide "necessary cause and condition" for its return to the forum, Yonhap said.

Launched in 2003, the six-party nuclear disarmament talks on the Korean Peninsula involve China, the DPRK, the United States, South Korea, Russia, and Japan.

The DPRK boycotted the forum in April in protest against the U.N. condemnation of its missile tests, but showed signals of possibly rejoining the talks after meeting with Bosworth earlier this month.

S Korean minor parties opposes troop dispatch to Afghanistan

13:00, 21/12/2009 .. 0 comments .. Link

South Korea's four opposition parties on Monday vowed to oppose the government's plan to extend the period of troop dispatch to Afghanistan, local media reported.

Four lawmakers representing the opposition parties, including the liberal-leaning main opposition Democratic Party and left-leaning Democratic Labor Party, issued a joint statement to parliament denouncing the ruling Grand National Party's move to pass the troop redeployment bill.

"We cannot accept the troop redeployment to Afghanistan, and will do our best to stop it," the statement read, according to Yonhap News Agency.

The statement comes as the country's parliamentary Defense Committee plans to hold a meeting later Monday to discuss the government-initiated troop extension bill.

South Korea's Minister of National Defense Kim Tae-young said last week the troop deployment is in the national interest and potential damage would not automatically lead to withdrawal.

Kim also said his ministry is in close cooperation with Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade to ensure safety of South Koreans in the war-torn Central Asian country.

According to the government plan, currently awaiting parliamentary approval, the 350 troops will be stationed in Parwan Province, north of Kabul, in order to protect the South Korean Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT).

The South Korean government said the main mission of the troops will be to guard the PRT base and escort and protect the activities of civilian aid workers.

South Korea pulled out of Afghanistan in 2007 when 23 South Korean Christian missionaries were held captive by the Taliban, with two of them killed and the rest released.

Since then, Seoul has only taken the role of providing medical and vocational training by assisting the United States and only two dozen South Korean volunteers work inside the U.S. Air Force Base in Bagram, north of Kabul.

Afghanistan's rebel militant group Taliban has recently issued a threat against the planned troop dispatch, which South Korea's defense ministry last week played down by calling it "conventional."

The Infringement Bureau was evacuated and one woman had to be decontaminated after the powder was discovered in an envelope just before 10 a.m., the New Zealand Press Association quoted police spokeswoman Elizabeth Young as saying.

ESR scientists have since revealed the substance was not hazardous.

Police were now conducting a scene investigation in the building in Cuba Street's Terralink House, Young said.

An investigation has been launched into who had sent the envelope.

The ground floor of the building was sealed off and the woman staff member who opened the letter was put through a decontamination shower.

She was then sent to Wellington Hospital's emergency department as a precaution, Young said.

The bureau is responsible for issuing speed camera tickets and other driving related fines.

US, Russian presidents discuss arms control

11:52, 19/12/2009 .. 0 comments .. Link

US President Barack Obama says the US and Russia are quite close to agreeing on a successor to an expired nuclear arms control treaty. Obama had wanted a new deal in place before the end of the year, but that does not appear likely.

After talks with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on the sidelines of the UN climate conference in Copenhagen, Obama expressed confidence that a successor pact will be agreed to in a "timely manner". Medvedev largely echoed Obama's expressions of optimism, saying their positions were very close. He also said technical details still needed to be worked out. The new deal would replace the 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty that expired on December 5th.

S Korea to revise gov't plan on inter-Korean relations

12:10, 18/12/2009 .. 0 comments .. Link

The South Korean government is moving to revise its plan on improving ties with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Seoul's Yonhap News Agency said Friday.

The government will revise the Basic Plan for Development of Inter-Korean Relation, drawn up in November 2007 under the previous administration, to include the principle of linking improvements in the DPRK's nuclear issues with economic cooperation between the two countries, according to what Seoul's Unification Ministry has briefed to the ruling party, Yonhap said.

The blueprint omitted the part on constructing a "peace regime" on the Korean Peninsula, which the Roh Moo-hyun administration had put emphasis on.

"The revision plan would be consistent with the existing plan but would reflect current situations of DPRK's nuclear issues and President Lee Myung-bak's policy philosophy," an unnamed government official was quoted as saying by Yonhap.

The original plan, laid out by the Roh Moo-hyun administration in the spirit of the joint summit with the DPRK in October 2007, does not link plans to expand economic cooperation between the two sides with progress in nuclear issues.

President Lee, who came to office in February 2008, has been tougher with the DPRK compared to his liberal predecessor, maintaining a hard-line stance on the DPRK's nuclear program.

Obama signs $1.1 tril spending bill into law

12:21, 17/12/2009 .. 0 comments .. Link

U.S. President Barack Obama on Wednesday signed into law a 1.1-trillion-dollar spending bill for fiscal year 2010, except for the Defense Department.

The Democratic-controlled Senate approved the bill on Sunday. The year-end package that covers about half of all federal programs then went to President Barack Obama for his signature.

The 1,000-plus-page bill brings together six of the 12 annual spending bills that Congress had been unable to pass separately because of partisan roadblocks even though the 2010 budget year began on Oct. 1 2009.

The legislation includes 447 billion dollars of U.S. government agencies' operating budgets and about 650 billion dollars for Medicare and Medicaid benefits. But it does not include the Pentagon's spending, which is about 626 billion dollars.

The unfolding financial crisis and economic recession have put the United States into a fiscal dilemma.

Senators from the Democratic said the spending was critical to meet the needs of a recession-battered economy.

Republicans criticized that the bill adds more burden to the federal deficit, which hit the record of 1.42 trillion dollars in the 2009 fiscal year ended Sept. 30.

The Obama administration expected the federal deficit would reach 1.5 trillion dollars in fiscal year 2010.

Also on Wednesday, the House of Representatives voted to raise the 12.1-trillion national debt limit by 290 billion U.S. dollars.

As of Tuesday, the amount of debt on Treasury's books was 12.016 trillion. If the debt ceiling isn't increased by the end of this year, the nation could default on its debt.

That would unleash a chain of events that could devalue U.S. bonds and seriously harm the U.S. reputation with creditors around the world, according to U.S. media.

Pakistani court verdict not to affect President Zardari: spokesman

12:10, 17/12/2009 .. 0 comments .. Link

Pakistan's Supreme Court verdict to revive corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari will not affect the president, presidential spokesman said Wednesday.

Supreme Court Wednesday revoked a controversial law which had granted amnesty to President Zardari, several sitting ministers and thousands of politicians and bureaucrats, who were accused of corruption, embezzlement, money-laundering, murder and terrorism.

A 17-member judges bench ruled that all corruption cases are revived against those who were given amnesty under the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), which was issued by the former President Pervez Musharraf on Oct. 5, 2007 as part of a political deal to allow Zardari's wife, former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, to return from years of exile to Pakistan.

The president of Pakistan enjoys immunity under the constitution and no criminal proceedings whatsoever shall be initiated against the president in any court, Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar told reporters after the verdict was announced.

Babar said that the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) respects the courts and the Supreme Court's verdict.

"The Peoples Party in the past faced challenges and will face in future," the spokesman said. He said PPP and its leaders are not afraid of any verdict.

When asked as to why President Zardari does not quit morally, the spokesman said that 12 years ago no case was proved against Zardari and the conviction was also overturned by the Supreme Court.

The NRO, termed as most notorious act of constitution, was challenged in the Supreme Court and a 17-member bench of the apex court in a unanimous short verdict revoked the NRO and described as contrary to the constitution.

In November 2009, the government of Pakistan released the list of the beneficiaries of the National Reconciliation Ordinance on the directives of Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani.

State Minister for Law Afzal Sindhu said at a news conference that a total of 8,041 people including 34 politicians, bureaucrats and three ambassadors took benefit from the ordinance.
