Business Communication - International Marketing

Conclusion

Posted on 21/1/2012 at 13:01
So this will be my final post. I will conclude all my findings about the International Marketing specialization on the The Hague University.

First I looked to the difference between some studies in the commerce department. I find you that IBMS is more financial focused, SBRM is more creative and for CE is marketing a main subject.

Then I went to look in the CE study. You have three specializations, but what were the difference?

-          Marketing, Media & Entertainment : is focused on the entertainment side of marketing, like events.

-          Marketing & Sales : Is focused on legal and financial aspects and the application of the latest information and communication technology.

-          International Marketing : pays attentions to how the international market environment and the developments affecting the marketing lining.

I also have looked to the whole IM study. I saw that the projects are all focused on the international side, but je main courses not very much. Only Asia and European studies and the second foreign language with international marketing.

All the rating are the same. They work with study points. Every specialization need to get all their marketing courses and 50 study point, otherwise you can get a negative study advice. That means that you have to stop with your study.

Some people started this study because they wanted to learn also a foreign language, but some really want to work abroad. You can see that de students are equal divided by sex. In the other specializations is this not so equal.

So what do I think of this study?  I believe that if you really want to call this specialization international. You should start to give you more classes in English, then only the English course.

Most of the main courses teachers have abroad experience, and will be able to teach in English. Because if you cooperate with a foreign country or work abroad, you need to know all your terms in English.

What are the job possibilities?

Posted on 21/1/2012 at 01:02

Al the specializations have their own future prospects:

Marketing, Media & Entertainment:

You can work in marketing or communication departments at various companies, organizations that organize events, organizations in the field of culture, city marketing, museums, media and advertisement agencies who are looking for commercial talent with knowledge of developments in the media and entertainment

Marketing & Sales

  • ·         Account manager for large and small businesses
  • ·         Head of sales for medium and large businesses
  • ·         General management positions within the commercial organizations
  • ·         Channel manager
  • ·         Account manager
  • ·         Product manager
  • ·         Marketing manager
  • ·         Consultant
  • ·         Market researcher

 . International Marketing

  • ·         Companies that focus on expansion abroad
  • ·         Coordinate export companies from the Netherlands
  • ·         Companies that conduct international trade
  • ·         Marketing and sales activities abroad
  • ·         Advertising agencies (with international costumers)
  • ·         International market researcher

You  can see that the future prospects from international marketing specialization are more focused on working abroad or in a international company.

How much people finish their study completely

Posted on 20/1/2012 at 21:58
In this post I will tell you about the students who quit the study. In the rapport of the accreditation commission was this also a subject. There was a table with the percentage of the students who get their Propeduetic after the first and second year.

Year

Propeduetic first year

Propeduetic second year

2001 – 2002

23,9%

52,7%

2004 – 2005

31,3%

63,4%

2006 – 2007

69%

I you want a good study advice, you have to success all your marketing courses. And you need to have 50 study points. Mostly when students have their Propeduetic, they stay on The Hague University. A small percentage of students go to the university after their first year.

The Commerce department have set up a plan to make sure that in 2012 90% from the 70% that get their Propeduetic will graduate in the five years of the study. For that they have made a measures.:

1.     A better personal development coaching

2.     Take care for the bottom students

3.     Further identify and examine the possible pitfalls and adjust the program

4.     Professionalization of the tutor system

So when people have their Propeduetic, they propeblay will stay to finish their study. There are now even set some measures to get their goals.

Is it a boys or girls study? How you do notice this?

Posted on 13/1/2012 at 12:58

Commercial Economics has three specializations:

  1. Markteting, Media & Entertainment
  2. Marketing & Sales
  3. International Markting

When I look in at the first years introduction days, there where way much boy than girl. But not everybody was at the introduction. In the raport from the accreditation commusion was noted that their where 80 more students in the first year CE than last year.

I will find it out per specialization:

In the specialization of Marketing, Media & Entertainment  are a lot of girls. Because you can create events, it is more focused on the world of entertainment. Their are also boys, 2 of them told me that they are creative, but that they also wanted to do something next to drawing all day. And this gives you the oppertinity to be creatives in thinking about events and them's but you are also busy with marketing.

Marketing & Sales is a real boys study. I think that there a maybe 10 girls spred in four classes. That is not much. But a lot a guys, have that salesman attitude: like a good talk, self convinious know where there are talking about and the strength to keep pushing, beacause they are not sattisfied this a no.

Last, but not at least: International Marketing. There are two classes where boys and girls are almost equally divided. The hard core in our class is more fulled with girls. I don't know how that is in the other class of IM.

So MME is more a girls specializations, M&S a boys and in IM there is a good distribution. But because there are more classes of M&S there are more boys in this study.

Have all the teachers experience abroad?

Posted on 13/1/2012 at 10:57

In this posts I will you about the teachers and their experiences.

When I started with this study, I really liked to hear what all my teachers have done, what they are still doing besides teaching. My teachers are:

Mr. Hoppen, studied the Dutch language and Communication skills.

  • lecuturer and Co-ordinator of internships, Work placements and projects.
  • sales employee -- NBBS (Dutch Station for Foreign Studentsrelations)

Mrs. Bortel

  • Lecturer · The Hague, Netherlands
  • Marketing - Unilever
  • Senior Research Executive - Research International
  • Research Executive - Swift Research
  • Mrs. Berkelaar

    • Rotterdamse Salon - Self-Employed
    • Researcher and teacher - The Hague University
    • Entrepreneur - Firm Talk
    • Researcher and teacher - Faculty of management and organisation

Mr. Elgershuizen: I couldn't find anthing on the internet about Mr. Elgershuizen. But I know that he has abraod expercience, aomost all his examples in his class are thing that he experienced. He is always telling us to that changes, if we can work abraod, because he really liked it. He has been a marketing manager but also a salesman.

Mr. van der Marel is working is the research industry. first as a employe, but now as a marketing manager by TNO quality of life.

I have more teachers, but I couldn't find anything on the internet of them.

My conslusion is that people from the main subjects like, marketing/ international marketing have abroad expercience. I really think that is importent in our specialization, because in the end that is what we want to do.

How are the exams and the ratings?

    Posted on 12/1/2012 at 16:57
Each course is assessed through an exam or an assignment. In the in the student charter from the Commercial Economics is everything stated. We work with Study points, the courses are split in the way  they are going to be tested.

Example: marketing is my main course, and this year it has been split in 2 semester one and two. In semester one have I two marketing tests.

    Mkt 1.1 à 1 study point

Mkt 1.2  à 2 study point (because I have way much more to learn)

In semester two have I also 2 marketing tests:

    Mkt 1.3 à 1 study point

    Mkt 1.4 à 2 study points

So if you get all your exams you have 6 study point from the 50 you need to go to the second year, and 60 is you want your first year degree in your first year.

The weirdest thing is that my specialization course, International Marketing, is not tested by an exam. But on the presentations and rapports.

You also got combination courses. For example: General economics and Law.

Law        exam          à 1 study point

                    Assignemt à 1 study point

    General economics

                    Exam        à 2  study points

But if you fail on general economics, you also lose your point for Law. So then you don’t have 2 points, but 0.

What does people expect from the study? Do they get this?

    Posted on 12/1/2012 at 10:56
Marketing is a very large field with a lot of work opportunities. I personal wanted to do this study because I like marketing, but I’m not really sure what I’m going to do with it when I’m finished. So I’ve asked a few other persons who choose this study, above another study. Some of them are still doing IM, and one them quit.

First one is a girl who was studying at the international university of hospitality management. She was in her second year, but still had not her first years degree. So finally she quit. And started at The Hague university Commercial Economics. She told me that this study was almost the same as the international university of hospitality management. Only the cooking, housekeeping and serving classes were missing. Also is this study in Dutch, and her pervious study was in English. She really likes the study, and she is getting the feeling that she understand the material.

The second one is a boy, who quit after six months. He likes marketing but the other class he dislikes. His reason to leave was also because he thought that it was not so good arranged. The projects, with contently people who left, but also his week schedule. He expected a study with a lot of interaction, meet new people, very dynamic. But in the first it is a lot of studying and get that first year degree. So in January he found out that this was not the best study for him and quit. I personal think that he was just not that in to school on that moment.

The final boy is now is his second year, but he actually belongs in the third year. It is boy who needs someone that tell him what to do. He was lucky, because a college student was that kind of person and he really helped him. He likes the study, mostly the international week. There is a lot of interaction and new people. He had chosen this study because he wanted to do something international, but not with too much pressure. So that was the reason why he chose International Marketing above IBMS.

So people are choosing this specialization because of the international projects, and the second foreign language. But if they really want to live and work abroad.. I’m not sure? We will see.

    Projects

    Posted on 11/1/2012 at 01:03

    Projects

The International Marketing variation has a lot of projects.

    First year

Your first year starts with the Supermarket project. It is split in two parts.

The first part: You have to find an innovation on an existing product. Then you make a structured plan containing:

    rise to the investigation
    problem
    central question
    research questions
    your goal
    methodology
    timetable
    division
    literature
    cooperation

When the project starts you get assignments that merge with the matter discussed in your marketing book. You also have to do research in the field. The class of Market research is very helpful. So in the end you the first part, you learned how to make a good structured plan for a marketing research, but also for market research. And you have to write a interim report, within an executive summary and interim advice.

     The second part

This is also equal to the material covered . It is more difficult, and you really have to think things true.

In the end you have write a final report. Also with an executive summary and a final section were you answer you central question and research questions.

This project and the things you have to do are the basic of you research skills. You will do this the whole study.

In your first year have you also a Intercultural Project with the first years if IBMS. You learn about the different cultures, and how to deal with them. It is totally in English, and all the classes are mixed up. It is very nice, because you can meet new people while you are studying.

     Second year

    International week

     Third year

    European studies

International semester: Students will be able to join an exchange program. They can study abroad or stay in the Netherlands and join the program over here.

Extern project: Students have to solve marketing related issues for an extern client.

    Fourth year

    Posted on 10/1/2012 at 12:31
There are two other specializations in Commercial Economics:Marketing, Media en Entertainment and Marketing & Sales.

In this posts I will tell you about the differs between all the three specializations. I will discuss it  based on the core subjects and the outlines. The future prospects will I discuss in an other post.

The differences between IBMS, SBRM, CE IM

    Posted on 9/1/2012 at 15:15
In this post I will tell you about the difference between 3 studies: IMBS - SBRM - CE

IBMS, also known as International Business  and Management Studies. It is the only English management study at the University of The Hague.

In the foundation year, they will see if you really got what it takes to complete the programme. If you pass this year, you’ll be invited to continue your studies. As the first year is so important, unsuccessful students may have to leave the programme. All foundation modules must be completed by the end of your second year in order to continue on the programme.

In the second year you can choose a minor, next to our major program. With a minor you can either specialize or widen your scope. IBMS currently offers minors in Branding, Business-to-Business Marketing, Financial Markets and Human Resource Management and Languages. But we are continuously developing new minors, to keep up with the trends in the market. You also have the possibility of choosing entirely different minors from other programmes in The Hague University of Applied Sciences.

In the second semester of the second or third year, depending on the length of the programme being followed, the travel begins and you’ll get to go abroad and study at an international partner university. While you’re here, they will expose you to as many international and cross-cultural experiences as possible. The school has over 150 partner institutions, all over the globe. They send hundreds of students to study or do work placements abroad - from the US and Europe to South Africa and South America, from the Far East to the Middle East.

During your last year, it’s time for real business, and you’ll do an internship with an international company.

    Small business and Retail Management

You learn how to set up a business for your own, or how you can work as a manager is the retail sector.

The first year is focused on the future. What does an entrepreneur? You can split it in two specializations. The first is a project called, Young Undertake, you learn how it is to set up your own business > Small business.  In your practical and the first year internal ships you learn  more about Retail management.

In the second year will you go deeper in the matter discussed of the first year. But there will be also different theme’s . for some you really have to do practical things. Is year are there also a few gast speakers. And in the end you will choose for Small business or Retail management.

In the final two years of the study you will look deeper in your specialization. There are also a few subject that are for both specializations necessary to graduate.

    Commercial Economics

Before you start you have to chose what specification you want to do. There are three of them.

The first year is just orientation. You get to know what commercial economics is all about. There are al lot of projects, and practical material.

In the second year will you deeper in the material. There is a lot of marketing. You will be more focused on your specification. In the first semester will you busy to write a marketing. Market research is the main subject is the final semester of year two.

The third year is also split in two semesters. The first is focused on writing a export plan and in the second will you be working for an outside project.

You will graduate In the final year. You will be working on a international marketing cases and prepare for your final intern ship.

So actually IBMS is more financial focused, for SBRM is creativity importent and for CE is marketing the main key.
